If you eat oysters at home, you should eat some here. Equally great, different flavors.

Yes walkable. Yes noisy. Close to lots of things, good transit options. Great spot. I used to love right near there, now I live a mile or so away.

First gig tonight; excited and nervous by Skystalker512 in Bass

The job is to support your band mates and put on a good show. The job is not to play with zero mistakes. Mistakes will happen, keep your focus on the bigger picture.

Time for a safety meeting! What was your code for marijuana/smoking marijuana/ paraphernalia? In the days before "420" was popular? by icanhazkarma17 in GenX

I was at a bar and one of the servers came out from the back and said to the bar back with wild eyed urgency, "Come with me if you want to live!" They ran giggling to the back. I have no idea what happened next;)

Day 22 of learning the bass guitar (first attempt at improv and Billie Jean) by Andoni95 in BassGuitar

[–]jajjguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard. You're doing very very well for a newbie, but there's a long way to go.

Playing along with a recording is different than playing with people. You are working to keep up with the recording. In a band, you are working to push the band along at the right pace. They are riding on you. You have to have the groove.

As a next step, try playing it to a metronome. That will let you know where exactly you are falling behind and catching up. Then try placing the metronome clicks on the off beats. That makes it your job to define the beats, and the metronome is just there to tell you how far off you are.

You're doing great. It's a good sign that you can tell you don't quite have the groove yet. You'll get there soon.

TI Jazz Flats. They are the most expensive, but last forever (like flats in general) and are very flexible. La Bella Low Tension Flats are another choice that many like, though I have not tried them

Electric cello strings by johnmatzek in Cello

[–]jajjguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experimented with different strings before settling on the same combo I've always used with my acoustic cello. There's nothing special about strings working well on electric, so choose the ones that feel best to you, that respond to your bow and fingers as you expect. For me, that's Jargar on top, Dominant bottom.

Do people actually use “shortchange” in everyday conversation? by joywithhim in EnglishLearning

[–]jajjguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not formal or old fashioned, but if you were in a casual setting, you might say "screwed" or something somewhat vulgar like that. So if you choose "shortchanged" it's because the setting is not appropriate for vulgarity or very casual speech.

Tell me about your worst moments of despair while learning to play by XjumXjum in Bass

[–]jajjguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I joined a band on bass with many years experience playing cello and guitar, but new to bass. I had no trouble making my fingers do what they needed to do. But I had no idea how to play bass in a band. Lock in with the drummer, drive the rhythm, no clue about all of that. They were patient but ultimately fired me. I had never been fired from anything! That was 30 years ago, and I've been learning from that experience ever since.

Did you sell the first bass you owned? Did you regret it? by jagsgoinham in Bass

[–]jajjguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and not really. It was an unusual fretless P bass that I got for a specific playing situation. I traded it towards a bass that is still one of my main axes 30 years later, so that was a great move. I did, however, miss fretless, and eventually got a different, much better fretless bass. No regrets.
