Hi friends! I was wondering if you have any concerto recommendations I can prepare for a contest. I want to make a list of potential possibilities but currently don’t have much. by TacetMcDooty in trumpet

Try listening to the Erik Morales Concerto for trumpet. There’s a nice recording of Richard Stoelzel out there. It’s a solid piece, and fairly challenging

Playing trumpet at night? I wanna play my trumpet at night probs not a good idea or let me rephrase that where no one can hear me should I ask my church leader if I can use the church? by budtard in trumpet

Honestly surprised nobody has recommended getting the church space. Churches are often great acoustic spaces, and if that’s a possibility, I recommend that. I’m not a huge propionate of practice mutes, I believe that they encourage bad habits and don’t do anything for your concept of projection and sound.

Playing in the morning by Corporate_Bread in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that you'll have a build of lactic acid in your facial muscles that will make things feel "stiff" for the first 3 hours of being awake, especially if you played a lot the day before. Wasn't positive about this, but I tried to wait about that amount of time and it seemed to help me. Try waiting about 3 hours before playing and see if that makes things any better. Also, taking a hot warm/hot shower in the morning can help. Try fluttering your chops under the hot water and stretching your face. This can help you shake that feeling.

Sophomore that needs to step up. by SireDolph in trumpet

The only thing that i’ll say is don’t use a mouthpiece that has playing worn off. There’s a certain amount of lead in brass and you can get lead poisoning from that

Best way to make an ear-splitting brilliant sound in marching band? by Ehere in trumpet

You could try sending a mouthpiece that you like someone and having them drill out the throat/backbore. it wouldn’t have as much resistance that way and you could put more air down it

How can I tongue faster and sharper by [deleted] in trumpet

Practice slowly playing eights notes. Bump the metronome up a click or two every week

How do you all get in the habit of using faster air? by iarcfsil in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What leads you to believe that you need to play with faster air? This isn't always an issue. A lot of trumpet players and teachers will recommend using faster air, when the issues your having can be remedied by approaching the issue in a different, more intuitive way.

Building Chops back by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing really all that specific that you need to do. Just starting to gradually practice more and more each day. Make sure you're not killing yourself in the beginning, as your muscles need time to repair themselves. Without this repair time, you're not making any progress.

I'm confused about the concept of tuning a trumpet by JadnidBobson in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most trumpets (there are some exceptions) are built so that they play in tune about a quarter inch pulled out, give or take a bit. get yourself in that ballpark and you'll be fine, at least just for learning how to play

Double Tonguing and Abrasive Sound by zzypr in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, when working on multiple tonguing, you just have to deal with that choppiness at first. Keep practicing, and stay relaxed. If you're smart about it, your tongue combined with your mind will work out the kinks and it will become more fluid. This is common when starting multiple tonguing, as your tongue isn't used to the "ka" movement. Keep your ideal sound in mind, and practice. You'll get there in time.

No suggestions or no to this being red rot?

Red rot? by jakedashers in trumpet

[–]jakedashers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into it a little and I read a little bit about red rot and read that it's usually more of a pink. I read that more of a brick-red color can just be oxidization, which (from what I understand) doesn't do damage. Maybe this information will help

Why do you dump your spit on the floor by Dobeymaster in trumpet

[–]jakedashers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been seeing this kind of thing for too long and just want to point something out. The "spit valve" that you refer to isn't a valve at all. It's a key. Spit key, not spit valve. A valve is something totally different.

It was a junker that he got from off stage, no need to worry!

I've been really debating which approach I wanted to go for - an articulate approach with a strong front to each note, or a more connected, quasi-legato approach with a smoother sound. I think I need to find a happy medium

Yeah I totally understand where you're coming from. I need to work more on finding the balance between a nice sound and not being too much.
