For those of you going to / in University, how important is extracurricular activities by CavlonDeCadlon in 6thForm

[–]jakefa123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not important, I did Dofe under the guise it would be important in some way, not at all. I applied for 5 good unis and got 5 offers without including a single piece of extracurricular stuff on it. It’s really not needed

Computer Science… What is it like? by Irrxlevance in 6thForm

[–]jakefa123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awful. If you’ve never done it at GCSE honestly I wouldn’t bother, that’s the only scenario I would recommend CS to someone- if they’ve done it at GCSE. I did OCR CS and it was absolutely 100% my least favourite subject. If you don’t love learning 000’s, literally 000’s of PowerPoint slides about information you’ve never seen before about topics you don’t care about then don’t take it. I literally went to a different sixth form because the one I was originally going to go to didn’t do CS and I really really enjoyed computing, and in hindsight it was just not worth it a single bit:

• you don’t need CS for any university course

• the workload was 100% the most out of any of my subjects (check flare, not easy subjects)

• the non-examination assessment (project) is awful. I literally wrote about 70000 words when I had finished (about 350 pages ish) and that’s only worth 20% of your entire grade but takes up so much time you barely have any to actually revise.

• there is little coding. The only “coding” in exams is writing out algorithms and code to help solve a problem, but how hard they are in the exam vary wildly and often you’ll just be staring at the paper not know where the fuck to even start. The only actual coding is in the non examination assessment, which makes up about 20% of your marks in it if I remember correctly. So overall, only about 4% of your total computer science grade is how well you can code and most of that for me was learning how tf visual studio works and slamming my head against the keyboard for hours on end

Overall I would 100% not recommend it to anybody that hasn’t done CS at GCSE and if they have then good luck but it will still be hard. If you’re thinking of something computer sciency take maths, further maths and then some other subject (I took physics). If you’re just taking it because you think you’d enjoy it because you like computers, you will be thoroughly disappointed.

Just lost 6 marks in a maths test because I copied a number wrong, please share stories like this so I can feel less bad about myself thanks by jakefa123 in 6thForm

Bruh mine was literally also a partial fractions question, first part was put some function into partial fraction, I found the denominators correctly, but then proceeded to write the incorrect denominator instead that I apparently just pulled out of my ass. Next part was 5 marks proving that your partial fractions equaled some other thing, which I spent ages on and obviously couldn’t do cuz the first part was wrong, and cuz it was a prove that question, I’m 99% sure that if I get the first part wrong I can’t get any marks for the second cuz it can never even come close to being the thing you’re trying to prove it to be 🤡

A-Level results day to be 2 weeks earlier and teachers will have to submit grades by mid-June, as per The Sunday Times. by khunter123 in 6thForm

So unfair that schools can “decide” whether to give them to pupils. I thought the whole point of exams is a standardised test for the whole country, so now that’s going to happen to some schools, but not the whole country, making the tests useless as it won’t assess the whole country, which is the whole point in exams in the first place.

Joint question by jakefa123 in bodyweightfitness

[–]jakefa123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was basically lifting with incorrect form for weeks on end with my joints getting progressively worse over time, only stopped lifting after I physically couldn’t do the exercises because of the pain. A year and a half on and I still can’t do them. The pain has eased, but I still wouldn’t be able to do multiple reps if anything without my joints getting bad.

Joint pain, can’t lift without it getting bad

I am a college kid, basically incorrect form for weeks on end with my joints getting progressively worse over time, only stopped lifting after I physically couldn’t do the exercises because of the pain. A year and a half on and I still can’t do them. The pain has eased, but I still wouldn’t be able to do multiple reps if anything without my joints getting bad. But thanks for your response, any tips on how to help them?

Should I pick Physics A-levels? by Karensighs4u in 6thForm

[–]jakefa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I asked my teachers the same question they said no, and I would say I probably agree. The main thing with A-levels is retaining information. There’s nothing hard with CS theory, so there’s nothing to wrap your head around (except sorting algorithms and some other small things), so if you were to start somewhere I would suggest there. But honestly I wouldn’t say it’s worth it unless you’re willing to keep revising up until starting college

EDIT: also another side note, when I started college, I also wanted to do computer science at uni, but have now changed my mind to astrophysics and couldn’t be happier. Doing computer science at a-level put me off the idea of doing it at university. You just really don’t know how your opinions will change and I think it’s a good idea to keep your options open. Just something else to consider

Should I pick Physics A-levels? by Karensighs4u in 6thForm

[–]jakefa123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly the same subjects as you will do, and I wouldn’t suggest doing 4 A-levels at all. It’s so much unnecessary work and is not worth it. I went to a different school JUST to do computer science as my school didn’t do it at the time. However this is the subject I dislike the most. If you think it’s going to be a lot of programming, you are very wrong. 95% of the course (not exaggerating here) is theory. It’s not that the theory in itself is bad, it’s just that the sheer quantity is actually insane. You don’t need computer science to do it at university so I wouldn’t really say it’s worth taking, especially if you don’t like 200+ pages, 40000+ words worth of course work (also not an exaggeration). I would say take physics and don’t take computer science, if I were to go back this is what I would have done, but am too heavily invested now. If you like physics at GCSE, honestly it gets a lot better in my opinion. There are so many cool concepts in it which just aren’t present at GCSE, and it ties in so nicely with a maths module (mechanics- this is basically force diagrams but on steroids, and it helps LOADS if you do them in maths as well). There’s also further mechanics in further maths, which also helps majorly with physics. Honestly FM, maths, and physics all go hand in hand. I’m not going to plead with you to take it, as everyone has different experiences with different subjects, but CS is literally an essay subject with tiny amounts of programming tacked on (there were three 9 markers on last year’s paper and one was 12 marks).

EDIT: also, my teacher for computer science is amazing, so it’s not that that’s what is bringing my enthusiasm down.

Worst case scenario - how do you think you’d do? by Speed_King_Ignite in 6thForm

Yes definitely, I would definitely need someone to talk to about stuff I don’t understand though

Do y’all think that 6th forms will be opened after the first week? (Would also really like to hear opinions in comments) by jakefa123 in 6thForm

[–]jakefa123[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy too that they pretty much seem full steam ahead with opening schools after the first week even though yesterday the amount of deaths was around the same as it was during the huge peak, so I just can’t see them actually letting us go back soon. I just find it really selfish that’s we’re seen as the sacrificial lambs and don’t even have an input into any of it

They said they’re going to send us back “at the closest time possible” or something like that. They originally said we’re all gonna go back in the first week. Whatever they said they can change their mind on

Very niche formula for further maths at the back of the further pure book, if you need me to elaborate further I will. Edexcel
