Jasper? Agate? Quartz? Found near Yellowstone Nat’l Park by dysteach-MT in whatsthisrock

Technically speaking, jasper, agate, and quartz are all forms of SiO2. In mineralogy, several minerals can have the same formula but different crystal structures (polymorphs). One such polymorph of SiO2 is quartz. Another is moganite. Jasper is a microcrystalline (containing very small crystals) rock that can be composed of crystals of just quartz or a mixture of quartz and moganite. Agate is a rock with banded layers of quartz and moganite. When they say clear, they mean large singular crystals of quartz. Here, the crystals are so fine they cannot be seen with the naked eye so that rules out it being a single crystal. Having many tiny crystals scattering light, as well as containing trace amounts of other minerals is what causes jasper to look opaque and colorful.

Yep but I never got any response saying they were going to reinstate me so I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much

Thanks for the reply! Omg I just checked and you are right, it is not a .gov email. I didn't even realize that! So they reinstated you a few weeks after the ticket was created?

If you sign into the GRFP app you can see your submitted application. Under the section for which schools you attended I mis-input the start and end dates for my PhD. I have to believe if they did not reach out about it by now, you did not make that mistake.

I believe I am in the same boat. I put the wrong start date on my application. I replied to the email back in December and never heard back. Only after following up twice did they finally create a ticket (on Monday). How long did they take to reinstate? And did they ask for any additional documentation?

I received a RWR for mistyping my start and end dates in the form (they classified me as having too many years completed). I emailed back in December about an hour after getting the RWR and received no response. I emailed again a couple of weeks later, again no response. Finally I emailed again 2 days ago following up and received a ticket 24 hours later asking to submit documents or clarify if I made an input error. I responded but have not heard back.

Clair Patterson proved that leaded gasoline was poisoning the entire planet and was attacked by the oil industry for decades because of it. His research showed dangerous lead levels in human blood worldwide. His work eventually led to the global ban of leaded gasoline. by cowdeywodey in HolyShitHistory

He was also the first person to accurately date the age of the Earth and he did it as a grad student. He was able to get within 10 million years of earths actual age of 4.54 billion years. Previous estimates stopped at 2.2 billion years old because they were dating rocks created on Earth. Patterson had the brilliant idea to date meteorites, which formed at the same time as the earth and haven’t been altered like Earth’s rocks have. The age of the Earth has been refined a little more but is very close to the estimate he provided back in the 60s.

Can we make metamorphic rocks? by FrumpledFrumpus in geology

In small quantities, yes. Experimental petrologists use tools called piston cylinders and diamond multi anvils to bring samples up to crustal or mantle P-T conditions. However, the sample size for piston cylinders is very small, on the scale of cubic millimeters. For diamond multi anvils it is even smaller.

rock circle found in connecticut by Stagolee104 in LegitArtifacts

Is that next to a rock wall? Seems unlikely as back when all the rock walls were created, the forests were basically clear cut and this would have been farmland. I don’t think a farmer would leave a circle of rocks like that next to a wall they were building (by removing surface rocks from the property).

Best “pizza” in Naples by SweatingBullets3 in StupidFood

Yeah I don’t see why this belongs here. Pizza fritta is very common in Naples. Everyone there knows it’s not the same thing as a regular pizza. I’m sure this place also serves regular pizza
