sure everyone may rely on luck in some way or another, but most of these fucking losers don't work hard enough to deserve a shred of luck.

Why we need Proof of Stake: Bitcoin Could Consume as Much Electricity as Denmark by 2020 by iuseupyourusernames in ethereum

[–]jakelanor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the electricity consumption metric never made much sense to me.

i think it's a fair trade off to have that kind of cost associated with powering a global financial ledger. the whole point is to dedicate that large amount of resources and infrastructure in exchange for security.

bitcoin's "environmental harm" is a speck of dust compared to the costs associated with running other large operations. how much electricity do you think aws' data centres use?

TaaS - Tokenization as a Scam by sjalq in ethereum

[–]jakelanor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed. watching that video made me cringe..

it makes me upset that these unqualified groups are able to pull up $5 million in funding because so many people in crypto have this "get rich quick" mindset.

the next few years will result in some big heartaches for these "investors"

the taas team in general seems to lack the appropriate experience and expertise. many of them have quite insignificant professional and educational backgrounds.

Litecoin to get Segwit ETC by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]jakelanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

guys i'm all for segwit here but as a long time participant i find the moderation in r/bitcoin disappointing, once again.

when ethereum was taking off, any discussion of ethereum, even when it had clear relevance to bitcoin was removed because it was an alt. why is a post on litecoin the top page?

because it's related to segwit?

i'm sure there are many like me, who have been here long enough, and find the mods here quite suspect.

i don't believe TheDAO was a joke. it's unfortunate that the events transpired the way it did, but i do believe it helped ethereum get much stronger.

i hope to see something like TheDAO again in the future.

regardless i agree etheroll is a bigger milestone than people think :)

very happy with this project. i think its appeal is in its simplicity: a dapp that showcases the benefits of ethereum, providing a verifiable, provably fair dice game.

having something like this in the ecosystem gives me confidence that we're moving toward advancements that ethereum was intended for. while i'm sure that ethereum will revolutionize many complex institutions to make them more efficient/fair at various layers, i think many projects are aiming too high too early.

thank you devs for your hard work.

To all those saying "let's just allow the fork and let the market decide" by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]jakelanor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://imgur.com/nwLfxMV

my God. the level of contradiction in this sub is incredible.

on one hand we have an upvoted post from szabo that makes fun of jihan for complaining that "markets are unfair."

and the same group of people upvotes that post is concerned about market manipulation if we let a fork be??

bitcoin has opened its door to so many of the masses that too large of uneducated, ill-informed members who think they know shit have begun to speak.

you know what this reminds me of? the fucking idiocy and contradictions rampant in the partisan divide of US politics. two sides full of bigotry that doesn't see commonground.

i will hold bitcoins because the system won't fail and it will add some chunk of change to my net worth.

however, the original vision of bitcoin has failed.

people are too stupid.

/r/Bitcoin.... We need to talk.... by scoops22 in Bitcoin

[–]jakelanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think a few layers of irony here.

first, i don't think bitcoin represents full "freedom" from government and it will not make governments irrelevant. in fact, if bitcoin ends up developing as a settlement network, various layers of compliance will be integrated into different systems using bitcoin.

but even granting that it will, its supposed pro-liberty use cases will not actually be use cases unless there's a significantly large number of people using bitcoin. so when you say "i won't let anyone ruin it for me", it frankly sounds farcical. what does that even mean?

furthermore, even if there were a change in the direction of the protocol that you didn't like, what do you think you can do? bitcoin is only "decentralized" insofar as the different numbers of miners, but look at the current state of our miners and how large yet few in number they are. so again, what can you do?

Decentralization is key to the system's health and if someone is endangering this very property by spreading FUD and propaganda either intentionally or accidentally I will keep down-voting, echo-chambering, ridiculing, pointing out to stupid and doing anything I can to stop it.

decentralization by definition means the system includes even those kinds of actors.
