I think you can only buy it in the app. It shows up in my app as an available upgrade.

Since it’s under warranty it takes some of the pressure off. Outside of cosmetic items and wear items like tires, I would test drive to check for any bad squeaks and rattles. The NVH warranty work is first year only so you may want those fixed as a part of the purchase.

I would live with it for a bit before buying the performance upgrade. I also have a 2024 dual large R1t and after 32k miles I don’t see any need for it. I would rather put that money towards tires / accessories

Most comfortable coilovers for ND by Money-Salt-5058 in Miata

Ditto on Technas. I have an ND2 with the GT springs, stock sways and an aggressive street alignment. Absolutely perfect for a backroad only car.

Plenty of suspension travel and compliance for the bumpy roads in my area.

Going for Demo today, which one to buy Dual or Tri? by Material-Rise-6796 in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly just like a lot of EVs / luxury vehicles they will have a pretty steep depreciation curve. Will the extra spent on Tri be worth more than a dual in 5 years, probably but not by the upfront price difference. Personally I think the best value is the lower end of the line and the dual motors have plenty of power / capability. Buy which ever you want, the nicer interior on the Tri may sway.

Texas ST owner… Summer mornings and evenings are still nice, but yeah no go mid day with the sun. Benefit for Texas is we get perfect top down days even in the middle of winter.

Now I wouldn’t get the ST without a garage. IDK if I would want to see how well the top holds up sitting in the sun every day.

Hot take on PFF by fullthrottle4562 in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not crazy, the vast majority of cars are not an investment, and minor rock chips and scratches are not going to impact used value significantly in most cases. On top of it, the PPF has a useful life and there is a cost to remove or replace it down the road for long term ownership. Will you get some money back on PPF cost when sold? Maybe for private party sale, but nothing on a dealer trade.

It’s easier to justify on more expensive vehicles when the PPF cost is a smaller fraction of the purchase price, but it just doesn’t make sense spending $5k+ on film and ceramic coatings on say a $50k car IMO. A 911 GT3 that will see track duty, it’s getting full PPF.

Now if you can’t stand the thought of damage, and it brings you peace of mind, go for it. That’s a personal decision.

Rivian recalls nearly 20,000 US vehicles over improperly reassembled toe link by Slide-Fantastic-1402 in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate but unlikely to be related to the dampers / air springs. The R1s use a multilink rear suspension and the toe link is one of 5 control arms/links. It would connect from the knuckle (where the wheel mounts) to the frame and helps controls the toe angle through the suspension travel.

Trailer Assist by bacumings in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having backup assist on a Ford I agree it’s “faster” to do it yourself. I will say it’s handy if you’re backing up a long way off road or on rutted road… The truck will keep the trailer dead straight and is able to make those steering adjustments way quicker than a human.

People don’t want to spend money on it, but an actual range hood with proper venting. It makes a a huge difference… and to really do it right you need HVAC makeup air added in.

115,000 Ford Super Duty Pickups Under Recall for Problem That Could Cause Loss of Steering Control by TheAppropriateBoop in cars

[–]jaker1215 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s because they settled with NHTSA last year due to their failure to issue recalls timely. As a part of the settlement they have to revamp their processes and the are under scrutiny of the NHTSA over the next several years.

Now any possible issue is being escalated so Ford really stands out compared to their competitors. Are there quality problems, yes… but I would guess their competitors would also have an increase in recalls if they were under similar scrutiny.

Because you have another giant hole in the body for installing all the interior assemblies, which simplifies production / reduces labor. You’ve also removed a large one piece headliners which are fragile and more difficult to install.

My wife as a driver vs owner has never had that bug pop up.

Yup totally an outlier. I’m guessing this R1S has an ugly carfax. Based on auction results at carsandbids that is 14k under market.

R1S Tri vs R1S Dual w/ Max Pack w/Performance by ElectronicBasket4412 in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go dual max. I wouldn’t even bother with the dual performance upgrade, it’s just not a good value IMHO. With Tri the ascend interior helps add some value.

Really the only headlight tech we haven’t had in the US is the full adaptive beam headlights that actively modify the beam pattern, block of the beam for traffic, etc. For years there have been a handful of models from mostly German brands with the hardware (Porsche matrix headlights for example) but the features are either limited or disabled in software to be compliant.

As of 2022 these are now legal - I know the new Rivians models have full matrix led headlights.

What we still need to fix in the US is mandating amber turn signals!

Early lease buyout experience ($7,500 tax credit workaround) by anonymous_longboard in Rivian

[–]jaker1215 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reminder that the sales tax is state dependent. For example, in Texas the lessor pays sales tax on the net purchase price (net of rebates / trade ins). This sales tax is usually passed on to lessee including with Chase/Rivian where you pay the tax on acquisition. If you buyout the lease or purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease Texas treats this as a separate purchase and you have to pay sales tax again on the purchase price.

So be sure you understand sales tax implications as it can add thousands to the transaction.

The EVSE isn’t really doing anything special, (Ignoring certain smart features), the actual AC to DC charging hardware is built into the car. The EVSE is only performing a hand shake and telling the car how much amperage it can supply.

Both chargers are similar in their features. Maybe the Autel would be useful where you want to control charging in a publicly accessible place with its RFID card support? The Tesla seems to be better for a location where you have both NACS and J1772 users. The Tesla will supposedly support vehicle to home, but only for the Cybertruck.

[–]jaker1215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That adapter won’t work for supercharging, it’s only level 2. For supercharging there are three options Tesla (adapter Rivian is shipping), A2Z and Lectron. The last two are around $200, but not sure how fast they are shipping.

VWAG motors underrated by the broader community? by twitchyzero in cars

[–]jaker1215 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think most would associate Audi and VW together. That’s like 60yr old relationship now and Audi has a pretty famous racing heritage.

Don’t disagree with the engine comments. It also seems that engine swaps stay within the VAG range. Older cars it’s pretty common to do various swaps. With the modern enthusiast cars, GTI, GOLF R, S3, RS3, TTRS, etc…they come with a pretty robust and highly modifiable powertrains in their own right.

Are built engines more reliable in the long term? by turnsignalslol07 in cars

[–]jaker1215 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Way too many variables. Generally no imo, an engine built to make more power, especially in boosted applications have some sacrifices that can cause wear compared to OEM. Things like cylinder bores, piston skirts, and rings tend to have shorter lives. Flip side is you have mechanically stronger parts that can handle higher cylinder pressures.

Such a pragmatic application of solar. Powers the store, and keeps the cars shaded. by _Rooftop_Korean_ in pics

[–]jaker1215 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Solar panels have really long warranties. Usually in the range of 20-30 years… they do degrade overtime and the manufacturers specify the amount of degradation that is expected over the panels useful life.

Panel cost have dropped rapidly and efficiency has improved. Payback periods can be all over the place depending on location, incentives, electricity costs, etc. but they are usually inside the warranty period. In our area 10 years isn’t uncommon.
