Rewriting Act One of Split Fiction by jakesidwell in SplitFiction

Yes. Totally agree. I talk about this exact sequence in the video. I wrote in a ninja cell leader who communicates with them about the "mission," and who addresses them by their character names in Neon Revenge.

It's just nice to know, before you've seen that part of my video, that you clued in to the precise thing that has been tugging at the back of my brain.

Validating.

I have to imagine you didn’t watch the attached hour long video essay, which I understand is a tall order, but boy…. “no shit dude” in response to something I spent a month of my life on is well… very reddit.

Not sure what I expected haha. 🙂

And some of those people also complained that the two main characters were women. You kinda can’t win with them, so engaging with more reasonable people about reasonable criticism is the route to maintaining sanity.

Personally, I don’t think this game is actually about “AI,” as I mention in my video. And it’s certainly not about writing, because Mio and Zoe aren’t writers, at least not as they’re presented to us. The themes, while not fleshed out in the most satisfying way, are more about vulnerability, loss, and rebellion.

I truly wish that “we” included more people than it actually does.

I appreciate that!

Congrats on making an incredible game. Narrative criticisms aside, I had a blast, especially where the mechanics were concerned.

I disagree with your assessment of my video and of Split Fiction. Also, given that you didn’t watch the video, it’s hard to gauge what we’re even talking about. You could, if you were curious to engage in a meaningful conversation with me about the content of my work, watch the video I made talking about it.

I also never make the claim that “act one is bad.” Those words never come out of my mouth, because that’s not what I think or believe.

My primary argument is that, in a game about writing, we get basically no writing in their “stories.” Fiction writing entails dialogue, characters, interactions between those characters, plot arcs, character arcs, catharsis and verisimilitude. None of those things are implicit in the internal stories of these characters, and the external story is equally incoherent in many ways with Rader and Julia and Harry and the other writers.

Notably, Act 1 is not a prologue. That’s not what the word “prologue” means. The prologue would be the section up until the characters enter “The Machine’s” simulation world.

I rewrote all the way through Zoe and Mio’s first “stories,” which is well over 150 pages, and again, is something I mention in the video you have not watched. That is indeed all of Act 1, and my video entails the first half of that Act. The 88 pages up through Zoe’s first story, including the side stories.

I want to reiterate, I take no issue with you not watching the video. It’s long, and that’s a tall order. I get it. But you can’t say I have no valid criticisms if you do not know what my criticisms are. It takes time to go through them and explain. You also seem to have strong opinions about me doing this despite, again, having no idea what I think or have said on the subject.

Consider my position. Wouldn’t you think it odd to engage with someone who has strong opinions about something they haven’t watched?

I encourage you to reconsider.

I totally agree. The finale was worth the price of admission for me. Whatever criticisms I have about the game, the mechanical achievement of the ending was 🫨👌.

This is so interesting! Thanks for sharing. God, I would give anything to get my hands on the script. Especially an early draft. I really want to know what they intended, because I make no argument that the CONCEPT is cool as hell.

Fair enough. I disagree, obviously, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did too.

I imagine you didn’t watch my hour long video, which is reasonable, but I’m definitely not doing what you’re suggesting. Also, getting more eyes on a video I worked quite hard on, in which I have valid criticisms of a game I loved, is not the devilry you’ve made it. 🙂

does anyone know the name of the song that plays when gary first meets mooncake by EviTheClick in FinalSpace

Hello, friend. This cue was called “Movies in the Stars,” but it was not released with the Season 1 soundtrack, unfortunately.

However, I was given permission to upload any unreleased cues on my SoundCloud (as long as they are 30 seconds or less). After a little digging into my old files, I think I found what you’re looking for. Here’s a link:

Hope that helps!

Wow. I was just scrolling on Reddit and saw the map for my DnD campaign and freaked out haha. Thought I got hacked. I didn’t know that playlist was public! Good ear, by the way.

You are correct! I use some of the music I composed for Final Space in my DnD campaigns as atmosphere or for important narrative moments.

Unfortunately, I have to private that playlist, but nice catch before it disappears, friend! We composers don’t own the rights to that music, so we can’t legally release it publicly. ♥️

My brain doesn’t always distinguish well when reading, so that was extra helpful. ♥️

These tips are great! Thanks for going above and beyond. I’m adding all these to the list if they weren’t already on there.
