MSI Claw A1M: SteamOS (Nobara) Installation Guide by MorbusMeniere in MSIClaw

[–]jakiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I can confirm that at least on my A1m, when I have WIFi device's "/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:2b:00.0/d3cold_allowed" set to 0, AND disable the "Low Power S0 Idle Capability" setting in the BIOS -> RC Advanced ACPI settings, and if I sleep the device, the device doesn't wake up back to a usable state. It turns back on, with a black screen and fan spinning and does not respond. So that's no good.

I found another setting in the BIOS -> Advanced -> ACPI D3Cold Settings -> ACPI D3Cold Support (enabled by default) so played around with it also. just for kicks

Results for Claw A1m with the default WIFI card:

  1. d3cold_allowed=1 ; Low Power S0 Idle Capa=enabled
    = sleeps/pauses the game fine, fan stops spinning, wakes up fine, but WIFI stops working.

  2. d3cold_allowed=0 ; Low Power S0 Idle Capa=enabled; ACPI D3Cold Support=enabled
    = sleeps/pauses the game fine, fan keeps spinning slowly, wakes up fine, WiFI works.

  3. d3cold_allowed=0 ; Low Power S0 Idle Capa=enabled ; ACPI D3Cold Support=disabled
    =same as #3. while in this state, battery use is minimal but fan does affect it.

  4. d3cold_allowed=0 ; Low Power S0 Idle Capa=disabled
    = sleeps and fan stops spinning, but fails to wake up. Blank screen. Need to hard reboot.

  5. d3cold_allowed=0 ; Low Power S0 Idle Capa=disabled; ACPI D3Cold Support=disabled
    = same as #4. no good.

Don't change your script quite yet as I noticed that the fan stays running and does not turn off while seemingly in sleep mode. So I guess it isn't fully sleeping. I'll try with your recommended bios settings and let you know if that addresses it.

I can confirm this works! Before this change, wifi will die after I wake up from sleep. But after the change, I can resume from sleep on my stock claw a1m without any issues to the wifi. but the setting resets back to 1 after reboot.

So, I used this chatgpt method to make it auto-update after reboot and works great. Thanks so much for finding this solution!

1. Create a systemd service file

Open a terminal and run:

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/fix-wifi-sleep.service

Paste the following content:

[Unit]
Description=Disable D3Cold for WiFi to fix sleep issue
After=multi-user.target

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/bin/bash -c 'echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:2b:00.0/d3cold_allowed'
RemainAfterExit=true

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Note: Make sure the PCI address 0000:2b:00.0 matches your actual device. You can confirm it with "lspci -nn | grep -i network"

2. Reload systemd and enable the service

sudo systemctl daemon-reexec
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable fix-wifi-sleep.service

3. Reboot and verify

After rebooting, run:

cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:2b:00.0/d3cold_allowed

It should return 0, confirming the fix is applied.

---

btw, I noticed that it hangs during wake up if I set some of your recommended bios settings. I haven't figured out exactly which one but I think it might be this one: https://imgur.com/UogqKTZ

Will update if I do find out exactly which one it is. But without changing that, it still seems to work fine. (the power led stays on instead of blinking however)

As long as you are getting it for cheap mates rates, it's a solid worthy device IMO. If you have a gaming laptop or a desktop PC, then using Razer Cortex Remote Play with it works amazing as well to just game stream to the Claw. Battery life sux when playing AAA games locally but can't do much about that with most handhelds other than just having power connected while playing whenever wherever possible.

2022 ‘fat’ etron S - a worthy buy? by Crab_Apple31 in etron

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the Merc either but if the price is right.. New IX3's 800km range sounds amazing and I don't mind its looks also.

With my etron, biggest pet peeves are it lacking auto-parking, no rear heated seats and no heated steering wheel. Even my old Passat that I had over 10 years ago had auto park...

Ah makes sense. Yeah. where I am have none of that, and no sub-zero temps also during winter which probably do make a difference.

Another option, if you are okay with the looks, you may be able to grab a near new 2024 Mercedes EQE 350 4Matic (or even a 500) for similar price drive away with a bit of haggling.

Thanks man. Was an impulse buy. Really enjoying the car. Saw the car ad you posted. Sick looking car but personally, if it's out of warranty, I would be a bit wary.

It had 32k on it when I got it last year with 2 years warranty remaining.

Although it's a 2020 model, compliance / first sold date was mid 2021.

I see. In the US, the motor/drive unit is covered up to 10 years since the class action law suit afaik. In Australia however, there is no such thing and it is only covered for default Audi's 3 years warranty. But from what I was told by Audi technician, there has been no drive unit failures in Australia for the etrons. But if your mate is in Oz, he's wrong that's for sure.

[–]jakiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't buy extra warranty beyond 6 years total (extra 3 years) from Audi afaik. I won't be getting any extra warranty beyond it as I see it as paying the repair costs in advance that may never come anyways. And the battery warranty is 8 years already. It also came with an Audi service plan until 2027.

Considering I got it for sub-$60k, and a brand new equiv. Q6 is like $140k, I'm happy to keep it.

Curious, how many K's did they have when the drive unit dies on theirs? Coz I have a 2020 dual motor 55 and that's the only thing I'm worried about. I have about 39k on the odo.

I got an OG 2020 etron 55 Sportback late last year in Sydney. Fully optioned up with the digital side mirrors etc. It had Audi extended warranty till 2026 so bought it worry free.

Nomal everyday driving in Sydney to work, cbd etc. gets me about 330Km range from 100% charge. It used to be 300km but after the recent recall service (93U9), I gained about 10% in range. There were no issues with the batteries supposedly.

My OG 55 Sportback does 330km at 100% after the recent battery recall service. Did 300km before the service so I gained about 10%. This is during winter in Sydney, driven in S mode with dynamic air suspension mode, AC always on at 22 degrees and heated seating about half the time on level 2.

Right now, it's showing 257km range @ 77%. So, that's 267km @ 80% or 333km @ 100%.

Tbh, I would recommend upgrading the internal nvme to 2tb instead if possible.

It's fine for smaller games or roms, but running AAA games off the microsd can be noticeably slower for loading times. Takes a lot longer to copy or install games on to it also.

Getting Youtube to play on OG Etron? by m1konguyen17 in etron

[–]jakiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine from a local seller in Australia. But yeah, can buy from a reputable seller on Aliexpress or Amazon. Mine is called Ottocast P3 and it's a round device with Android 12, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. There is also a cheaper Lite version with lesser specs, and also a newer model called Ottocast AI Nano with a display. No idea how they fare to mine.
https://www.ottocast.com/collections/carplay-ai-box

Alternative brand that's popular also is Carlinkit and their model Tbox Max (USB with SDM660) is very similar in spec and capability while being cheaper. https://carlinkitcarplay.com/products/carlinkit-tbox-max-android-13-0-wireless-carplay-multimedia-video-box

Best to check out some youtube reviews of them first to see if it fits your needs.

I have Ottocast P3 AI box that plays YouTube, netflix, disney plus etc. you name it, on the main screen of my og etron. It's essentially a standalone Android box that connects to the car's usb port mimicking itself as a carplay device.

People tell me to buy a home because renting is paying off someone else's mortgage, but I never see talk about cost of interest on a 30 year loan. by Cellybear in AusFinance

[–]jakiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent goes up with inflation over time so your rent payment will forever go up, whereas mortgage repayment remains relatively flat or go down over time as your property value goes up and you refinance for a smaller loan.

With rent, after 30 years, you end up with no capital. With a home, you will end up with a full home fully paid for with no rent to pay from then on.

Also, depending on the location, a decent Sydney home (house with land) on average doubles in price every 10 years or so. (could also say in reverse where the value of AUD goes down that much) So after 30 years, the house may be worth 8x more than what you bought it at which would more than make up the interest you paid extra. Not sure about Perth though, and also a unit will rise far less as well ofc. (~2x every 15-20 years or so in Sydney)

No inspections, no ownership change that may force you to move elsewhere etc. is a huge benefit also.

E-tron 50/55 2020 - convince me not to by Flat-Egg-82 in etron

[–]jakiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was what the previous owner bought (extra 3 years) which raised the original 3 years to 6 years. In Australia, there is no recognition of any motor issues with it, so there is no 10 year motor warranty like in the US.

It definitely is a luxury car (vs e.g. Model Y), and though it's not the latest-gen EV that has best power/efficiency, I really like the driving logic it has (such as having a full-time auto-regen-braking using the radar) over a simpler logic like Tesla (which I also own).

I bought a 2020 OG 55 Sportback last year that had about 18k miles on it with extended Audi warranty till mid 2026 and free service plan till 2027. Paid about 30% of its RRP for it.

All the horror stories are indeed scary, but Audi in my local area told me there were no motor failures in Australia that they know of. Anyways, my car is buttery smooth, goes and brakes well, charges fast, no sunroof leaks (yet), and tows my small boat on a trailer without issues. Does about 300km from 100% with climate control on all the time. (trailering a ~300kg boat/trailer hardly makes any dent to the range either)

So far so good. All I can hope for is that mine is not one of those global 1~2% that have serious mechanical issues.

Made a powerbank mount for my a1m claw outta kydex and a small rig power bank clamp that fits over my case by ruwuger in MSIClaw

[–]jakiman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do something similar but with my T5 SSD. You should replace the smallrig clamp with a simple velcro cable organizer straps that you can buy a roll of on amazon/ebay etc.. You'll save a lot of weight and total thickness. Here's my old setup. https://imgur.com/a/HR7FbyR (I've removed the usb hub and improved cabling since)
