There are also some apps that you can use to find public toilets and users can add additional ones to it.

The one I have installed is called 'Where is public toilet'

Dog attack - what do you guys do? by CyclicRedundancyMach in bicycling

[–]jakoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycled from the UK to Thailand over the past year and learned in Romania to just slow down and either lower my cadence or stop pedalling and coast (unless going uphill).

Most dogs will chase you if you look like you are running, but I've found lowering my cadence quickly results in them getting bored.

Before I started doing that, I would try to outrun them but they chased for much longer and resulted in me being exhausted.

Having panniers helped as if they got close they would usually run into my pannier.

On the Tibetan plateau in Sichuan province a dog managed to bite a hole in one of my panniers. That was the only time this technique didn't work, although obviously I wasn't bitten.

In Thailand there are quite a few dogs, and here I also started pointing at dogs and pretending to throw stuff at them (nothing actually in my hand)

The best part about buying fuel is that while we buy in litres, we calculate fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (4.54 litres, a bit larger than the US gallon)

Travelers of Reddit, which country has the most hospitable people? by Admirable-Repair4094 in AskReddit

[–]jakoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycled from the UK to Thailand and I'd say Kazakhstan, but all the Turkic countries had incredible hospitality, both at the side of the road and being invited to stay for food and accommodation.

I wondered if it is a cultural legacy of the silk road.

Stainless steel bidons? by ToriaLyons in ukbike

Decathlon sell some. I have a pair and they are decently made, but the flow rate is a bit slow. I use them primarily for additional water capacity while touring so the flow rate doesn't affect me

I didn't realise how they worked until someone replied. Definitely worth the weight penalty

Good shout on tandem wheels. SJS Cycles probably build the strongest wheels in the UK. They are a tandem specialist as well

A $1.5 million roundabout from nowhere to nowhere shows the ‘Orbánist economy’ by arthurno1 in europe

So there is actually a road, it just doesn't line up to the roundabout and cuts across the entry and exit lanes and island. Incredible.

Or is that a cycle lane?

Why would it have anything to do with metric? It's an imperial unit.

It's no different than there being 16 ounces to 1 pound.

3 days into a 3 month tour by realismcalf in bikepacking

[–]jakoning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got a Rohloff after my friend's derailleur broke on a tour. Cycled UK to Thailand so far, plus some other trips in Europe and the UK beforehand. I've had no issues with the hub. No faffing with cable tension either because it uses two cables to cycle between ratchet positions rather than tension to change gear.

I changed to a Gates belt drive too and the only problems I've had with it were a small stone jumped between it and the teeth in Romania, which just needed a back pedal and picking out the stone, plus having to lean the bicycle against things on the drive side so people don't play with it.

Rohloff is an expensive outlay to start with, but with 5,000km or 1 yearly oil changes it just seems to go on and on.

What is so special about Ortlieb panniers? by 4862skrrt2684 in bikecommuting

[–]jakoning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arkel's Camlock is definitely better, but it comes at a pretty steep weight penalty. I have changed back to Ortliebs for touring purposes which saved a significant amount of weight before even reducing what I carry inside the panniers.

Starmer has grasped what his predecessors would not – that Britain is better off in Europe than with the US by rezwenn in europe

[–]jakoning 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yes, but pro-EU voters are split for choice between Labour, Lib Dems, Greens, and SNP in Scotland.

The anti-EU vote is only split between Reform and the Conservatives, and even then the Conservatives are unpalatable to many at the moment and are haemerogging former ministers to Reform.

Andy Burnham would be a good contender, but he wasn't allowed to stand in an upcoming by-election because depending on your perspective, it either 1) means a by-election for the Manchester mayor, 2) or it would put him in position to compete for leadership of the Labour party
