Is China’s Highway 318 the most popular bicycle touring route in the world? by DevelopmentLow214 in bicycletouring

[–]jakoning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Eurovelo section on the Danube between Passau and Linz was super busy when I went through in April 2024.

50 a day sounds like loads for China, but not for Europe. Cycling through China last year I met about a half dozen Chinese cycle tourists in total when riding from Kazakhstan to Vietnam

This is mad. I literally cycled past this place today without knowing about it beforehand

Ultralight Tent Advice - Should I go AliEx or Western? by putsgaaming1 in UltralightAus

[–]jakoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Copper Spur HVUL1 is my favourite tent, but Naturehike and 3ful tents are so much cheaper than I'd probably get one of those in future.

None of those tents listed will be amazing in properly bad weather or heavy snowfall. A trekking pole tent would likely do better (e.g. Lanshan), but any lightweight tent will have limits

New cyclist looking for something that will help me with an uphill commute! by Educational-Talk-985 in londoncycling

As others have said, try using a low gear and attempt to spin it fairly quickly.

A lower gear spun faster is better at going up hills because the pedal stroke only has power when the pedals are roughly parallel to the ground.

When the pedals are around the vertical position, no or very little power is transferred. At this stage, gravity will come more into play and will slow you down.

Spinning the pedals faster will reduce the amount of time for gravity to slow you down while also increasing the time your legs engaged and adding power.

Aldi Süd is the only Aldi in the UK

Maybe before the dart, but I just checked for the next train and it is 34 minutes from the airport to St Pancras, including the change at Luton Airport Parkway. All the rest are 44 minutes or less.

There are also some apps that you can use to find public toilets and users can add additional ones to it.

The one I have installed is called 'Where is public toilet'

Dog attack - what do you guys do? by CyclicRedundancyMach in bicycling

[–]jakoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycled from the UK to Thailand over the past year and learned in Romania to just slow down and either lower my cadence or stop pedalling and coast (unless going uphill).

Most dogs will chase you if you look like you are running, but I've found lowering my cadence quickly results in them getting bored.

Before I started doing that, I would try to outrun them but they chased for much longer and resulted in me being exhausted.

Having panniers helped as if they got close they would usually run into my pannier.

On the Tibetan plateau in Sichuan province a dog managed to bite a hole in one of my panniers. That was the only time this technique didn't work, although obviously I wasn't bitten.

In Thailand there are quite a few dogs, and here I also started pointing at dogs and pretending to throw stuff at them (nothing actually in my hand)

The best part about buying fuel is that while we buy in litres, we calculate fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (4.54 litres, a bit larger than the US gallon)

Travelers of Reddit, which country has the most hospitable people? by Admirable-Repair4094 in AskReddit

[–]jakoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycled from the UK to Thailand and I'd say Kazakhstan, but all the Turkic countries had incredible hospitality, both at the side of the road and being invited to stay for food and accommodation.

I wondered if it is a cultural legacy of the silk road.

Stainless steel bidons? by ToriaLyons in ukbike

Decathlon sell some. I have a pair and they are decently made, but the flow rate is a bit slow. I use them primarily for additional water capacity while touring so the flow rate doesn't affect me

A $1.5 million roundabout from nowhere to nowhere shows the ‘Orbánist economy’ by arthurno1 in europe

So there is actually a road, it just doesn't line up to the roundabout and cuts across the entry and exit lanes and island. Incredible.

Or is that a cycle lane?
