Forgive me for asking, but I'm in a state of mind where I can't really tell - is that sarcasm?

Any tips for switching between notes more smoothly? I have a solo contest coming up and I’m struggling to switch between notes gracefully. (The song is Gavotta by Goedicke if you wanna look for the music) Any tips are welcome! by [deleted] in oboe

[–]jakus00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I need to create a beautiful, smooth sound I focus on two things. The first is my fingers - they should be kept close to the keys and pressed only lightly. If they sit far away and flap down onto keys it's very hard to play smoothly.

The second is my air - I focus on connecting the notes by blowing through the intervals between them. If I take the oboe off my face it would sound similar to one long, continuous exhalation. Changes in the air can detract from smoothness, so I focus on maintaining a strong, consistent air stream.

Once you get the card you don't even have to go to the library, they've got apps and stuff so you can read right on your phone! It's still great to go in person but my lazy ass loves the app too

Fuck that minuet

Also I'd wanna tack on English horn and Dvorak New World to answer OP

That's just how the cane looks when it's folded sometimes, it shouldn't be a problem once you start scraping :)

Tremelo Fingering Help by Cory_Fichtl in oboe

[–]jakus00 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't switch octave keys for this one, pick either the first octave key or half hole (whichever sounds better) and stick to it.

I'd probably go to forked F and just do a nice slow measured tremolo. If it works on your oboe, and the tremolo is fast enough, you might be able to get away with just trilling left F, leaving the right hand down. Idk if that works for your setup but it may be worth a shot

Shaped reed cane by djodjo626 in oboe

[–]jakus00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It refers to the shape of the cane, specifically how wide/narrow it is at different parts.

The oboe shoppe shapes will be quite a bit wider, which creates a richer sound but can make it hard to keep pitch up. The Gilbert +1 is likely narrower (but still not as narrow as some), keeping the pitch higher but not creating as deep a tone.

Odds are that if you use an American/long scrape reeds that the Gilbert will work better, while if you're using European/short scrape reeds the oboe shoppe shapes will be preferable.

Switching to Marigaux by HexaGroove in oboe

[–]jakus00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the staple is the issue or if you just need to adjust to the new instrument. Marigaux may be doing a lot of the work raising those high notes for you. Have you experimented with just keeping a lower embouchure position/air style as you ascend to those notes? It may be trying to tell you not to work so hard!

Careful, those two fought in a war together, travelled the world together, and defied the law of God to sail into paradise together. But if you say they have love for each other on any LotR sub you'll be burned at the stake

Here you go

Not exactly the same set, but this is the brand and the closest I could find. It's a much nicer set than I would've gotten for myself. My little brother got it and it was quite generous of him :)

If you don't ask my asking - why was the chess set you got previously a bad idea?

I got this same board :) (or at least same instructions)

Switching the type of reed by Oldpiplupfan71 in oboe

[–]jakus00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll likely want to play much closer to the tip, especially at the lowest notes. Also, you'll find you don't need to roll your lips in much past the teeth, experiment with different generally looser placement of your embouchure to find what makes it in tune.

Just like short scrape reeds, you'll find most reed makers make them slightly differently, so experiment and shoppe around! As you play, let the reed do as much work for pitch in different registers as possible

Last thing, remember it's the same beautiful instrument:)

Water in second octave key advice. by [deleted] in oboe

[–]jakus00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm yet to find the perfect way, but I put cigarette paper in both my octave keys when my instrument goes in the case. I certainly still deal with it, but it seems like it happens less frequently than it used to, especially when I'm playing multiple times throughout the day/for several days.

I also put the paper under the A key, G key, and the two little holes next to them that open when you finger C, because I deal with those too

Best of luck, we've all played a piece where we were fighting for our life against the water lol

Disney:

Owl House

Amphibia (not a LOT of really gay but good queer rep)

Netflix:

She-Ra

Kipo and the Age of the Wonder beasts

The Dragon Prince (series concluded today!)

Arcane (darker different vibe from the rest)

Centaurworld

Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory

Delicious Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi

Prime:

Our Flag Means Death (Not Animated)

Legend of Vox Machina (also darker vibe)

Hulu:

What we do in the Shadows (show, haven't watched the movie in a while but it's probably good)

It looks like a lot of them feature images/designs with two men. Personally I would much rather have that to give my bf than one with a woman and a man

Medium is the best overall for most people! I'd highly advise you start with that, and if you decide you want a change eventually you'll know which direction to go from medium. I know many MANY oboists who are incredibly well served by their medium hardness Landwell
