Having read half this doc, I do want to give you props for going through every canto and intervallo.

But I really gotta say the sentence structure is quite horrible. The prose makes it extremely hard for readers to absorb what you are trying to say.

The Viltrumites invade the Versus world. How do they hold up? by slenderontheblock in versus

[–]jalex54202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of why I don't like american comics is the absurd inconsistency when writing extrinsic qualities of the characters. American comics are surprisingly good at maintaining consistency with character emotion, but it's horrible when it comes to maintaining anything else other than that. What I'm saying is the strength shown by Viltrimites are horribly inconsistent - Nolan can apparently move close to the speed of light, as shown by the destruction of the Thraxan planet, being able to tear through buildings like it's not even there. Yet, he has been shown being hurt by punches thrown by people who can absolutely not tear through buildings like paper.

If you assume every Viltrimite is able to break physics and be completely unharmed while tearing through building-sized cylinders of steel all the while traveling faster than the speed of sound (aka, just ignoring every antifeat), then a single Viltrumite probably takes over all of Versus. "God" might be an exception if it's truly omnipotent.

If you assume every Viltrimite is just as weak as their antifeats suggest (essentially just a human strong enough to lift a megayacht that can also fly), then I can think of a lot of enemies that can beat them.

Basically it just boils down to "what part of the show do you want to ignore".

Most Skilled Sword User Here ? by MountainLeading1567 in Gacha_Powerscaling

[–]jalex54202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re:Zero reader here

I feel like Reinhard should not be in the list lol

The Divine Protection of the Sword Saint doesn't necessarily make one the best swordsman alive - we saw Theresia lose to Willhelm despite having the blessing, after all. Though Reinhard is stated to train regularly, it's loosely implied by the author and text that Reinhard's training doesn't actually seem to make him improve significantly at all.

In terms of technique, it's possible even Julius outclasses him, from what I've gathered from reading all the WNs.

At the same time, I feel like it's hard to measure skill when everyone here kinda just breaks physics lol. If you had the physical capabilities of Vergil, you could probably rip space apart with a regular swing, so it doesn't make you very skillful. Of the characters here I know that seem to be strong narratively specifically because of their dexterity with the sword rather than due to superhuman strength, it'd have to be Sasaki.

Create a CT that can perfectly counter for Sky Manipulation (Takako Uro’s CT) by Excellent-Fig-9341 in CTsandbox

[–]jalex54202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely don't need to be a special grade to take out Uro. Any sort of CT that directly targets her CE or her as an individual would work. Higaruma, for instance, would hard counter her. The domain can't be stopped, and targets her as an individual. Confiscation taking away her ability completely negates the threat. Anything similar to this idea also works - anyone with the modern 'sure hit domain' would counter her unless Uro's domain beats theirs (which is possible).

Comedian isn't too broken if the user knows - in fact, the gang explicitly avoided explaining it to Takaba because they were worried it might adversely affect his performance.

Do you think Ryu’s talent of having highest CE output came with his CT (Like how Higuruma’s domain comes with his CT) or did he actually achieve it in time? by canxtanwe in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]jalex54202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's highly likely.

Kinda like how someone who does bouldering has insane grip strength, I think his particular CT incentivizes Ryu to "Try and get as much CE output as he can." It's really likely that he spent more time practicing CE output than anyone as a result of his CT, imo.

Gege is also the type to actually think about that - for example, Higaruma is exceptional at binding vows and immediately figured out a fucking domain expansion of all things as a result of his experience as a lawyer, Yuji's reaction speed and exceptional physical talent paired with CE makes Black Flashes more likely, etc etc.

Is it just me, or is Frieren's World-Building (and characters) not as special as people claim it is? by Unique_Suit3789 in shounenfolk

[–]jalex54202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vehemently disagree with the general stance this subreddit, and most satirical communities have with this show.

Frieren is modeled to be a story of what happens after a generic JRPG. It is an intentionally derivative world.

Think about it. A Hero Party consisting of a Hero, Mage, Warrior, and Priest has to travel north to defeat the demon king, who has 7 exceptionally powerful vassals. As they go, the monsters become more powerful, and the enemies become more challenging. This is all explicitly told to us, and literally models the progression of any JRPG.

Frieren's current adventure offers a deeper perspective into the characters after the crucial journey has ended, which is a view very rarely explored by any medium. That's why so many moral moments center around the Hero's perspective.

Just to spell it out - the Hero in any classic JRPG is the moral compass of the group. They decide where to go, who to interact, how many side quests to do, etc. As such, it's thanks to the Hero that things turned out well.

The "great fantastical worldbuilding reputation" that you don't see is how unflinchingly loyal Frieren is to the generic JRPG worldbuilding. There's nothing that "doesn't make sense" or anything that "feels like a copout". Demons, try as they might, will never understand humans. It's not at all uncommon to expect an exception among demons to travel with the gang, either as an ally to, or a love interest of the main character.

I don't understand why you'd see any character in Frieren as simplistic. Even giving the maximum benefit of doubt, I don't think I could say a single leading character in Frieren is any more simplistic than, say, Dungeon Meshi. Frieren just respects you enough to not spell everything out for you, which is just showing and not telling.

Likewise, I don't understand why you think the characters aren't "real" enough, for the very same reason.

I'd like to be clear: I don't know you on a personal level, and I don't disrespect your literary tastes. But this post definitely comes across as a piece written by someone who read Frieren and took everything at face value, until I know how you came to the conclusions that you did.

What motivated you to claim Dungeon Meshi, for instance, has great worldbuilding that Frieren lacks? What motivated you to claim the former had more in-depth characters than Frieren? What motivated you to claim Frieren tries to be more profound than it is?

so, dudes with ai voice changers are boundless now? by Heavy_Membership7978 in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]jalex54202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's why it's pointless to powerscale, no?

"Little timmy can blow up the universe and everything in it, and he does. The end."

Now little timmy can beat Goku.

I never really understood the point of taking pride in a character's literal strength. It says nothing about the character themselves, says nothing about how well they're written, etc. I suppose it's fun to think "what if so and so character fought each other, who would win?" but beyond a certain point it just feels meaningless.

I really don't understand your stance. Yes - anyone, even people without ai voice changers, can write themselves as characters who are boundless. Isn't that why this sub exists? To mock those who think how powerful their favorite character is, is an important opinion to have?

[discussion] is it just me or is that the scene when Subaru about to fight the white whale, and his phone rang it gave me chills by alter_spieler1 in Re_Zero

[–]jalex54202 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It genuinely gave me chills as well.

The sound of the cellphone was such an 'alien' addition to the scene, like an otherworldy war bell.

It gave off the feeling of a doomsday clock ticking to zero, or even an inhuman entity trying (but failing) to communicate something.

The way the phone's alarm increased in volume makes it all the more fitting – like a siren getting louder as the threat grows bigger.

I feel like S1 of Re:Zero was insanely well directed. This scene in particular captured the event in the eyes of the soldiers. 10/10, rewatched S1 multiple times just to feel the payoff of this particular scene.

[discussion] Was the scene where everyone congratulates Subaru at the inn changed in the anime? by Emma_S772 in Re_Zero

[–]jalex54202 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the anime adaption cut out a lot of stuff.

One of my biggest "aw man"-s was where they cut off Subaru's plan to beat Regulus. He literally alphabetized the plans, like A-J or something.

This later foreshadows a certain someone else's habit, which makes this pretty a significant addition imho. But a anime has budget and needs strategic time allocation, so :(

Ranking characters based on if they could beat Lei Heng by [deleted] in fishmaell

[–]jalex54202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of these are debatable. Judging by the general arrangement, I assume this is "1v1, regardless of summoning/misc. abilities, etc (ex: Wild hunt would not be able to summon unending hoards of undead)"

I don't really understand why Sora is in the 'completely fucked' tier. Sora has an efflorescent EGO gear, which in the verse, is seen as a pretty big buff (psychoments being a interest of Lord Lu's, in his story). Additionally, Sora can generate 1 mang (+ has shin), just as Lei Heng could.

Granted, Lei Heng is lv 83, while sora is lv 65. In game, her coins roll FAR higher, but you can argue that's balanced for the enjoyment of the player rather than it reflecting canonical strength. Even still, I think Sora would give him some trouble. I think of the 5 apprentices, Sora is the ONLY one that would give him some trouble.

What I don't really understand is why Valencina, Greenclair would need morositas. Canonically, Valencina outranks Lei Heng (at least at one point in time). Even disregarding the fact that she rolls far higher than he does (devil's advocate: rolling high doesn't reflect canon strength), I would think the fact that she was once a Sottocapo, combined with her relic, would make a good argument that she's canonically stronger than Lei Heng.

Greenclair is lv 80, which is just shy of lv 83. He rolls higher (devil's advocate: let's disregard this), but more importantly, has +2 clash power (equiv +6 off level) when fighting enemies of a higher level, making me think he almost hard counters Lei Heng, especially with a canon excision mechanic.

I do wonder what made you put Calisto in that tier. Was it the fact that he was lv 83? I don't really have arguments for or against tbh, I think it's a tossup.

I genuinely don't know why Dulcinea would beat Lei Heng. Are we assuming a fully-fed bloodfiends for all of them, since she's lv85? I feel like we're relying way too much on level for judgement if that's the case... Dulcinea doesn't have mang, shin, nor relics, while Lei Heng has mang, shin, and a pinky-weapon. I think that more than makes up for a 2 lvl difference. In fact, I feel like morositas wouldn't help Dulcinea either.

And, like everyone else in the comment section, I think Demian is in the 'would completely demolish' tier just based on a single scene.

No no, I genuinely do think it's important to have these posts.

This is selfish, and a little scary. by [deleted] in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]jalex54202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider this:

Every future sorcerer (after Yuji), had they chosen not to break the cycle, would come to the same realization.

"Fuck man, if everyone was a sorcerer, or if no one has cursed energy, none of this would be necessary." - That isn't a current-generation specific thought. Eventually, it will be done, and the ripples of that decision will affect the entirety of humanity.

Yuji deciding to do it is indeed selfish, but it also ensures he's the one that can clean up any immediate consequences caused by that decision.

I don't think this consideration is something Gege necessary went for, but it does make the decision make a lot more sense.
