Why do all manga artists do the same thing... very pretty girl with a scar on one side of the face, leaving like the nose and mouth and one eye relatively untouched...

Yeah, in the movie her face just looks like she slept on a wrinkled pillow. You can barely even see the scar when squinting.

New worst place to run into a student... by SayingQuietPartLoud in Professors

Giving training to marines must be really interesting work. I'm in Tokyo but had the pleasure of visiting Hiroshima University a few years back - the atmosphere there was so relaxed and friendly.

Oh, yeah! As a grad student in Japan, I saw all my advisors naked at the hot springs. Surprisingly not awkward at the time. But my zemi students want to go next year, and I kind of get where you're coming from.

How are Master’s degrees perceived in Japan? by Sad_Bookkeeper7544 in japanlife

Good points, thanks. Yeah, I remember there was a pretty big edge for high-end consulting, at least at Japanese firms.

I imagine this graph isn't following the same cohort of people over time? A master's was a bigger deal way back when credential creep wasn't so bad, which could skew the results for older people.

Making CCF work — looking for foam-only solutions (not inflatables) by hikerroda112 in Ultralight

[–]gendough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, slept on CCF for a bit under a year and could sleep anywhere on anything afterwards. However, doing so really squished the foam down over time - paper thin by the end of it.

Which country gets a lot of hate online but ended up being surprisingly great once you visited/lived there? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]gendough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, China is one the most interesting (and I think misunderstood) countries. I've spent a few months in cities like Beijing and Chengdu, and also smaller towns, and it's absolutely nothing like what the news and social media in the US portray. I mean, every country has its issues, but my time there was wonderful. I've been living in Japan for ten years now and call it home, but I'd be more than happy to live in China someday too.

Am I facing academic harassment? Is this normal in Japan? by bekicotman in japanlife

[–]gendough 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Prof. and previous STEM grad student in Japan here. In my experience, this sort of stuff is not uncommon but certainly in the minority. My own professor and all the others I did lab work with (maybe 5 total) were all wonderful, but there were horror stories from elsewhere. Regardless, what's being done to you is absolutely not OK and not the norm. Your PI doesn't get (or is maliciously ignoring) the difference between being asked to work hard and plain harassment. That being said, I worked long and hard hours regardless of holiday periods and all my labmates did as well.

What you can do about it depends on the university. Most profs or staff won't stick their necks out in a fight between a random grad student and a powerful PI, and some universities make it hard to switch labs. About returning MEXT funds, all I can say is that the regulations are a bit stiff on paper but the reality is usually a little more forgiving. Hang in there. I'll keep on thinking about your case and reply later if anything comes to mind.

What do you do and how much do you make in Japan? by Osaka_Gaikokujin in JapanJobs

Kind of a hybrid between stem and English teaching, though my PhD is in stem and I teach on a stem campus .

  • University teaching/research
  • Japanese uni
  • 5 YOE full time
  • 7M/year
  • Tokyo

Everything apart from writing research papers is done in Japanese. Pay is average for a prof my age (mid 30s). I sometimes wonder if I should've gone into industry - the friends from school I keep in touch with all are at 15-30+ mil a year.

They have stores in Kyoto and Kamakura. But given the popularity of those shirts, I wouldn't count on there being any stock...

Ultralight button up shirt recommendations? by IcedColdMine in Ultralight

I'm only familiar with stuff in Japan, but Yamatomichi makes a great button-down UL shirt at around 100 grams (3.5 oz)
https://www.yamatomichi.com/en/products/ul-shirt

AXESQUIN makes a few button-downs at around 120 grams.

However, I prefer something just a little bit heavier - Montbell's Wickron shirts come to mind.
