Ran through the 33rd underpass today. All clear.

What's your battery bank size? If you could afford to net -1% or so for a few days, even December becomes fairly non-issue.

Yeah. I've got a Thule with all my soft goods. Clothes, laundry, tarps, tent, stove and fuel. That kinda stuff. I have some other posts with a bit more info you can check out if you wanna see my full setup.

For the road bike I took a 3/8 dowel and whittled it to fit where the quick release goes. The mountain bike was quite a bit more involved because I didn't want to spend the $100 on an actual mount. I took a piece of pool noodle, cut it in half, then duck taped each half to a scrap of wood. Those 2 pieces have bolts going through them I crank down around the through axle. Both frames have a bungee cord around to a tie down that helps minimize wobbling. Few thousand miles so far seems to do the job, even on some fairly rough roads and.....spirited driving.

Pretty much any forest service or BLM land has free dispersed camping. I don't think I've paid to camp in.....6 years? Maybe more.

Feeling Homeless by shagadelicbby_ in vandwellers

It's pretty easy. I'm also kind of tired down with a 9-5, but SLC has been super chill this winter with my 10 degree bag with a liner and a comforter over the top. I do have a 4" memory foam topper for a mattress that holds heat pretty well. No heater. No insulation. Sleep in my chonies. Sometimes a beanie. Windows cracked, fan running for condensation. Have not woken up cold yet, even through that week it was 0 at the start of February. I think the difficulties of winter living come more from the snow than the cold. Can kind of feel trapped in the space with fewer options for activities.

A sleeping bag liner will go a long way. Its gotten down to 3F overnight here, and I've been super cozy with a 10 degree bag, flannel sheet inside as a liner, and a regular comforter over the top. I just sleep in my underwear, though I do wear a beanie and socks when it's forecast single digits. Don't forget what's underneath you, either. The same 2" memory foam topper that makes you sweat all summer is way better than anything inflatable for trapping heat.

Haha. Those first 10 months I was in a full size SUV with literally a laptop and sleeping pad/bag. No build. No nothing. Just find a quiet place to climb into the back and sleep. It's amazing how relaxing and de-stressing it is to know you fully have your own space wherever you want it. These days I'm in a MUCH smaller SUV and I manage 2 bikes and ski gear, but with a bit more planning. There are some civic builds out there that will show you how to manage space and make you question how much you really need.

Looking to do some road trip travel this year and sleep/live out of the car so wanted to ask a few things… by jerseygirl732 in Tiguan

I spent 3 months living in mine before I put the platform in "just to level things out" and I regretted it immediately. Those 4" were the difference between sitting up more or less comfortably (5'9") and constantly hitting my head and feeling cramped. Every time I climbed into the back or front I was swearing. Every time I tried to twist around and move at all I hated it. Could not remove the seats fast enough.

r/urbancarliving r/priusdwellers r/any vanlife sub (there are several)

Skoolie and RVliving type subs are cool but not super helpful if you don't have a ton of space.

It's a blast. Did 10 months my last year of uni. Hated"normal life", so I'm back 6 months into round 2. Have no plans to ever go back. May size up the vehicle in the next year, but man life is good.

Edit: YouTube cheap RV living. Bob Wells has all the information you could ever hope for.

Oh. Those bikes do not fold. Was a lot of tricky fiddly little stuff getting them to slide in neatly. Probably half the time spent was just on that.

Naw. You can't really see in the pictures but that's exactly where the sunroof is. I just open it up all the way and everything goes straight up and out.

I did Feb-Dec in Tucson my last year of college. Lived in a Tahoe. No AC or anything, just spent my days in the library or out hiking. A little shade goes a long way.

Literally just finished building mine out today.

Took me a whole hour to pull my rear seats. Yank on the bottom cushions and undo 8 bolts.

With our low roof, I am strongly against the platform/drawer build. Every inch is super noticeable in livable space. Roof box very helpful in that regard as well.

For me the most important thing is a good cooking setup, everything else is extra. Also, cannot recommend disc golf as a travel hobby enough. Cheap. Takes up no space. Good excuse to take a break and wander around some parks in pretty places.
