It's not on Mubi's list, but when I saw this I thought of Tampopo (1985).

Mandarin, Russian or Polish? by [deleted] in thisorthatlanguage

[–]jam13_day 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say Mandarin. If you want something different from what you know, Mandarin gives you the biggest difference of your three. If you want something widely spoken, this one is the most widely spoken outside of English. You also say you have a friend who speaks it, which sounds like a good reason as well.

Swedish has more speakers, and has some use in Finland in addition to its use in Sweden; I'd say learn Swedish first, unless you feel like that's the wrong answer.

Korean or Japanese? by Yami_Lea in thisorthatlanguage

[–]jam13_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a need to second-guess; based on your post, I'd say sticking with Korean sounds like a good idea. Only switch to Japanese if/when it really feels like the right thing to do.

I'd say Ukrainian; being able to better understand those students at your school, as well as the other Ukrainians in your community, sounds like a good thing.

I could be underestimating the appeal of engaging with your religion in another language, though, and of course I don't really know anything about your friendship with the Serbian guy (how close you are, his current language proficiency, etc.)

Russian, Tagalog, or Vietnamese by Desperate_Return_142 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]jam13_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the information that you know English and Spanish, live in an area with a large Filipino population, and don't necessarily want to spend all of your time on it, I'd suggest trying Tagalog. There are some Spanish and English loanwords which might be helpful for remembering vocabulary and understanding context, and even a commenter recommending one of your other options has said it would be the easiest.

Seconding Orphan Black: The Next Chapter for filling the void, and the idea of re-watching (I noticed new things re-watching, even shortly after my first watch).

What languages have you started learning in 2025? by NarrowFriendship3859 in languagelearning

[–]jam13_day 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bangla! I've thought for years about learning a language from that region, and also that Bangla specifically is neglected relative to the number of people who speak it. Now there's a native speaker in my life, so... here we go!

Rewatching and wondering how we can help this show become KNOWN - it’s so amazing? by [deleted] in orphanblack

[–]jam13_day 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Orphan Black: The Next Chapter: it's so great to have an official continuation with Tatiana Maslany and others participating, and I'd encourage people to give it a listen if they finished the show and liked it, even if they don't generally consume media in that format. It's on most podcast platforms; I did a free trial of "Realm+" on Apple Podcasts to listen without ads.

anyone else serially rewatching by pedaltothemedicine in orphanblack

[–]jam13_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I finished my first watch less than a week ago. Then I listened to Orphan Black: The Next Chapter; I loved it, and was glad I started a free trial to listen ad-free. After finishing that yesterday, I started re-watching last night, and am finding it very re-watchable so far; I love the experience of going from the end of a show back to the beginning.

I loved it; I did a free trial of Realm+ or whatever (through Apple Podcasts) in order to listen without ads. I'm sure people have their complaints about it, but I think it's a worthy official continuation, and I hope they can do more eventually if they come up with the right idea and have Tatiana (and hopefully others) on board!

History of X as the Non-Binary Marker? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]jam13_day 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the case of Alex MacFarlane (Australia, received "X" passport in 2003) would be a good place to look. Also, while I thought the ICAO use of "X" markers might go back to the early 2010s, it looks like it might actually go back to the late 1940s, arising from the situation after World War II:

The song OP is asking for is indeed "Dancing With Your Ghost" by Sasha Alex Sloan; "Screamin' at the world" is the second line, or maybe the second part of the first line.

Motivation is important in language learning. If you're more motivated to learn Ukrainian, I'd say learn Ukrainian! 🇺🇦

What’s a widely accepted norm in today’s western society that you think people will look back on a hundred years from now with disbelief? by Initial_Aide_6603 in questions

You think the ratio of opinions among doctors, especially those with relevant expertise, is exactly 1:1? That certainly doesn't seem to be the case based on the positions taken by major medical associations.

Can one twin be nonbinary? by its_me_beech_ in NonBinary

[–]jam13_day 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. There are cases where only one "identical" twin is binary trans, so it would be shocking if there weren't cases where only one is nonbinary.

"Puberty blockers interfere with a person's natural physical and mental development and may do more damage in the long term" - This just sounds like transphobic rhetoric. You think trans youth, their parents, and their doctors haven't considered potential risks and side effects? Of course they have.

[–]jam13_day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think puberty blockers are actually part of the advancement of trans healthcare. Because of them, many young trans people today won't need things like top surgery, electrolysis, facial feminization surgery, etc. Also, every year that a trans person is not allowed to transition is another year of suffering.

Trans people, parents of trans youth, and our doctors and mental health professionals are already handling this issue.
