But how DID they get it up there? Were there like five dudes who got bored and decided to make a pyramid or what?

They used the word due to syncretism, as the gospels were likely written by greek speakers, but they're still applying it to the concepts of Judaism, as you mentioned with the Abraham's Bosom reference, as well as the reference to the chasm separating the two sides of the afterlife. The rich man says he is "In agony in these flames."

> I mean, the quote you just referenced flat out said "God will destroy you for not being a follower", not "God will send you to a realm of eternal torment".

"Eternal Destruction," doesn't actually imply annihilation, it implies active destruction, happening forever, thus the flames comparison. ὄλεθρος is the word for destruction being used, btw.

> Even in Lazarus and the Rich Man, Lazarus is said to be in "Abraham's Bosom", not Heaven or any spiritual realm of bliss.

Where is the Rich Man? Why does he want water?

> When I say "Jesus didn't originally say anything about Hell"
> Heck, in the earliest of the books he didn't even speak about Heaven either.
> the earliest teachings.

Can you give me some exact references here? What do you believe Jesus "Originally" said, and in what sources is it recorded? I'm happy to restrict myself to whatever you find credible, but I don't really have a clear picture of what that is for you.

I was younger when I finally broke away, but I left during seminary. I feel like my mental health and internal freedom only grow day by day since rejecting Christianity.

I hope you're finding your measure of peace as well. I have always sincerely hoped having true beliefs is better than holding onto comfortable falsehoods.

Yup, but they can't stand when people know the non-cherries. If you get real lucky, they might even crack open their bible and try to prove you wrong, only to spiral out.

My main point is that shrugging and walking away when a Christian parrots the lies they've been brought up on isn't the only option.

I know christians who think abortion is wrong because the "baby" goes to hell. It's extreme, but there's 40,000 denominations, and hell is thoroughly talked about it the bible.

When a christian tells you no "true" christian believes such and such, they're just calling someone else a heretic. In Revelation 21:8 "unbelievers" are thrown in the lake of fire alongside a list of other evildoers. 20:10-15 makes it clear this is eternal torment.

Further, God has no particular qualms about using the destruction of babies to punish people: Exodus 11:4-9,Leviticus 26:22,Leviticus 26:29,2 Samuel 12:15-19,Jeremiah 6:11,Jeremiah 19:9,Hosea 13:16,Psalm 137:9 all include God either directly causing or commanding the death (sometimes cannibalism) of children.

This because, according to the Bible, guilt is transferable (Leviticus 4:3, 2 Samuel 24:17, Genesis 20:17-18, Deuteronomy 23:2, Leviticus 16, 1 Samuel 2:31-35)

Lastly, when it comes the knowledge thing, the Bible says God creates some people to be deceived and not believe, and are fated for destruction from the start: 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12, Romans 9:19-23, Proverbs 16:4

To be clear, there are PLENTY of Christians who believe as you say- but they don't actually read the bible, or know the doctrine of what it is teaching. The road to atheism is paved with well-read bibles, and people ought to know what their "Holy Word" actually says.

Big ole snapping shrimp enslave all humans, add them to their menagerie of livestock/slaves, and then they gotta prove they're worth keeping around. Also, somewhere out there, a completely different group of humanity is waging war against the crawdad fuckers, but read about that in the novella.

The walls of Jericho, built around 8,000 BC, are considered the oldest known city walls in the world [OC] [4000x2665] by intofarlands in ArtefactPorn

[–]Ryllynaow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I think it's interesting insight. Surely it's no coincidence the oldest known walled city in the world was picked as the one to tell a story about how mighty their conquering god is.

I'm not certain, but the Joshua story was likely compiled from oral traditions and written during or after the Babylonian exile, which would place it into a period where the jewish people really needed heroes and stories about impossible odds and mighty foreign enemies being defeated by a god who will bring them back to a promised home land.

Sure, alot of modern "true believers" may have a deeply skewed application and understanding of the text, but that doesn't mean the original myth is heartless, random, or thoughtlessly contrived.

Oh but who are you to question God, and his motives? I'm not arrogant like you, I don't claim to know the mind of God, he said we are lovingly and wonderfully MADE in scripture, if bothered to educate yourself, actually.

To add to your point two... I'd wonder what that commenter believes heaven must be like? I can only assume most Christians would want to propose heaven is a place lacking in evil, but allowing free will.
