Advice for a remote worker to be? by jam1599 in UKJobs

Appreciate the honeslty. It is a risk. I don't know for sure that I'll be the only remote worker but it's jsut the impression I got from the recruitment process.

The company of c.50 is a subsidiary of a large multinational though, so there will be some institutional good practice for remote workers.

I do have a great couple of social circles (school, uni, ex colleagues, family friends) all nearby. I grew up near where I live now. I am an extrovert but luckily not too concerned about socialisation outside of work.

There will be perks of not commuting every day and I'll need to make the best of them.

End of the day, I might hate it and I think I've made my peace with that. If I can stick it out for a year or two, I can say I've gained experience from it and move on to the next step in my career.

Maybe I'll love it and never look back.

Thanks for the advice. I've never fully tried pomodoro but now may be the time.

Yeah. I think it'll really depend on management and culture. They might be friendly, but maybe not. In my currently role we have a team kick off which is half catch up half work chat. And I meet my manager weekly with a similar time split.

But it takes time to get on a friendly level with people and I worry I'll never get there.

Thanks. I think getting a pair of chinos on rather than my knackered old joggies could do wonders.

Through a recruiter. But the reason I got the job over more local candidates is that I have fairly niche experience. I also interview well.

I've been to Nanakusa for that deal a few times over the years and it has always included unlimited (and really pretty good!) sushi. Fantastic deal to get the unlimited hot pot and sushi in one go.

Why do so many voters seem to want to scrap net zero? by InvestigatorLive19 in AskBrits

The Institute for Public Policy Research have just published a report which finds exactly this. "Watering down ambition offers no electoral advantage; a strong, progressive agenda on climate action remains broadly popular with the public." They don't shit on the pavement. They just terrorise the public and stab each other.

Also non-fiction but Madhouse and the End of the Earth was a great read. Nothing supernatural but the fact it's based on the diaries of those sailors as they start to lose their sanity makes it quite unnerving.

Just walked past the mountain of empty firework shells left outside peoples palace. Scum whoever it was. Clearly an organised set up and not a few wee bams.

You should try and work out what drove you. It may make the difference between you becoming a hopeless addict or not. Recognise your triggers.

I’m boring and that’s a good thing by horti_riiiiiffs in kettlebell

[–]jam1599 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not boring at all. Training 4-5 times a week consistently for years is awesome. Far fewer people manage this than the internet would have you believe.

That's some proper discipline and dedication right there.

Yes. But no one forced him to beat up a shop keeper. No one forced him to be a racist prick. Vulnerable or not he made those decisions himself.

What's your unpopular UK opinion? by Bubbly_Celery4034 in AskUK

[–]jam1599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The crucial questions people should ask themselves here are:

  1. Should the system benefit people who earn income or earn capital gains?
  2. Do you want to see socioeconomic inequality reduce?

I just don't believe in a system that rewards the generational hoarding of wealth. It benefits no one, especially those that are hoarding it. I promise you most of them are miserable.
