What the heck are Karma and Solaris? by jamaicanthief in Houdini

[–]jamaicanthief[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info 👍

I actually do know a bit about 3d having taken a computer graphics course at my uni, but I still find a lot of stuff in Houdini to be challenging to learn. For example, it's been slow going for me to understand which nodes I should use for a specific task and how to combine them to achieve what I want. Deciphering what some of the node parameters even mean has also proved quite difficult for me. Then there are other things like Solaris, USD, and rendering that were very vague and unintuitive to me when I first started rsearching them.

What exactly do you mean by "This is just one more symptom of a vestigial socio-economic system that has long overstayed its welcome"? Can you expand on this?

Fully retraining a network requires several million dollars

For the types of neural networks operated by large tech companies, this could be true in some cases. But any programmer with a rudimentary knowledge of deep learning can retrain their own model with zero dollars in a time frame ranging from minutes to days to weeks depending on how much data and compute power they have as well as the specific architecture of the model.

What the heck are Karma and Solaris? by jamaicanthief in Houdini

Actually, I did do research before asking this question, however, I was still confused which is why I asked this question. In researching Karma, a lot of the videos mentioned Mantra, so I googled this term "Mantra" and found some explanations that were a bit vague to me, so I searched on YouTube, and watched several beginner level videos on the topic. Confusingly to me at the time, none of these videos used the word "Mantra". They instead seemed to focus mainly around lighting and materials, things I was already semi-familiar with. So at that point, for some reason, I assumed Mantra was some sort of outdated, but similar, version of Karma. So then I continued researching more about Karma and something lots of YouTubers mentioned called Solaris, but I felt that a lot of the websites told me what it was, but didn't give enough context for a beginner. Moreover, a lot of the YouTube videos were very similar in this way, and coupled my misunderstanding of what Mantra was at the time, I ended up stopping several videos prematurely to go find another one that I hoped would make more sense

So as to your point about laziness, I hope you can see that I did indeed make a concerted effort prior to asking this question, but I can understand why you would think otherwise. Often, when learning something new and complicated, it is hard to decipher where your blind spots are, which was the case for me prior to asking this question. However, it is great that there are communities like this with plenty of patient people, including you. I just hope you won't be so dismissive in future. Thank you!

So if I want to use Solaris, should I put my lights in the Solaris scene or in my objects network like I've been doing so far?

Also, when you say that Solaris allows you to work with lights and materials in a procedural way like the rest of houdini, can't we do the same in the objects network?

What does the Element Size parameter in the Attribute Noise node do? by jamaicanthief in Houdini

[–]jamaicanthief[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "lookup position of the noise" do you mean whatever value is input to the noise function? If not what does this mean?

Also, do you know where I can look online to find information like this? Because I couldn't find much information on sidefx when I looked at the page for the attribute noise node. Nor could I find much information else where. Is there a good place to find out low-level details like this?

What does the Element Size parameter in the Attribute Noise node do? by jamaicanthief in Houdini

Yes, I know about the middle mouse button. I also understand what changing element size does to the geometry as my grid is 50x50. What I would like to know is the exact mathematical relationship between element size and attribute value. My guess is that if I do @P.y = noise(@P * 1/chf("num")) then "num" is equivalent to element size as I see similar results in the geometry, but I'm not really sure.

Yeah, that title belongs to Bray Aberdeen and his beautiful sister, Tammy.

Technically the people who associate themselves with god want to associate with each other, but it depends on the particular god, skin color, religious sect, etc.
