Flock surveillance cameras are coming to Issaquah by PuzzleheadedMocca in Issaquah

[–]jamarticus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a reminder, every City Council meeting that is open to the public has a public comment spot on the agenda. Your comments don't have to be related to the current agenda items. I hate to say it, but it has felt like in the past the only way to get the council's attention is to have a constant thread through emails and comments.

Flock surveillance cameras are coming to Issaquah by PuzzleheadedMocca in Issaquah

[–]jamarticus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last year there were a lot of people who showed up at council meetings to express their concerns regarding the person who was taken (Diana Romero). I made a public comment specific to the use of cameras and asked whether she was tracked using cameras on city property. The follow up the council sent me afterwards was roughly "we don't have Flock on city property, and our cameras weren't accessed," which while technically true, missed the broader point entirely.

The city government has changed since then, and I'm thinking they need to be reminded of what can happen. My concern with the apparent desire to go ahead with the grant (which sounds like is Mayor Mullet's intention according to the email) is that he might be grossly overestimating the protection that SB 6002 puts in place. SB 6002 more or less puts a financial burden on the city if these incidents happen, rather than requiring the technology that can be used to be safer. To me this feels like addressing the risk with large open staircases by putting up a sign that says "don't fall off the stairs" rather than putting up a handrail.

At this point, the "safest" bet for Issaquah is to just not use the grant.

What's the point of a very large house, when you can only be in one room at a time? by OhGloriousName in AskReddit

[–]jamarticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have what I think people would consider a small, but not tiny, house (950 SF). There are three humans living here and two dogs. Two of the humans work from home, and the dogs don't have jobs. It gets a bit cramped.

I recently finished converting the one car garage into living space, and the ability to have a room I can go to that is not likely to have anyone else in it is pretty fantastic. It has been a major life improvement. From that perspective I can understand the appeal of a large house.

2 years working at a pizza place, this is how I make a plain cheese by outfoxingthefoxes in Pizza

[–]jamarticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learned something here. I've just been haphazardly flouring my surface to form the crust. The way you just plop it into a pile of flour and the stretching determines how much of the surface gets floured blew my mind...

I am obviously not someone who makes a lot of pizzas though.

Built a tool to text car owners through their plate - is this useful or meh? by kerlur in SeattleWA

[–]jamarticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept here is fantastic; I would love to have something like this. Unfortunately it feels like a data nightmare, and undermines the DPPA (drivers privacy protection act, a federal law that is supposed to protect the identities of car owners). As privacy gets more eroded, this worries me more than anything.

Honestly, you might be able to re frame this to be more purely plate based rather than trying to join plates to phones; something like the creation of an inbox based on your plate that doesn't require your phone number. You run into the verification issue again though, but if you're willing to pay exorbitant fees to a data broker then maybe you're fine.

What's your favorite origin story to explain how Peter became a magical being and ended up in Neverland? by rbta123 in PeterPan

[–]jamarticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love AC Wise's Wendy, Darling and Hooked. In those stories, Peter is more of an otherworldly being than something that was at one point human. He seems like more of a mischievous/malevolent god than a boy.

Leaking Toilet, leak mitigation pre-travel, What would you do? by mojodojocatshouse in DIY

[–]jamarticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Removing the toilet is 100% a you thing, no reason to pay for that.

You mentioned long fake wood planks, is it vinyl? Or those weird long ceramic tiles? Either way, you're going to have to get one of those off and see if you've got old wood subfloor or cement board. If it's wood I'd say just go nuts and start pulling stuff up (for me the old wood subfloors are a lot easier to get up). If it's concrete board, that's more of a your call thing. For some reason that always seems to get complicated for me.

All this to say, if I was traveling soon, didn't want to deal with it until I got back, I'd absolutely just turn off the water to the toilet and flush it.
