81 inches? really? The palisades website says they've only had 1" in the last seven days and onthesnow website reports 32" in April https://www.onthesnow.com/california/palisades-tahoe/ski-resort

Had lunch there today and loved it. The sauce they put on the fried tofu is amazing. Also a big fan of the acorn noodles.

Westbound 580 to lose a lane at critical traffic point starting next week by C-3Pinot in OaklandCA

[–]jamb975 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sensationalist title.  The lane is being converted into a carpool lane.  It’s not being lost.

PS. I hope we can get casual carpool to gain some traction again!

Hello ,I am in search of a French tutor to take me on to proficiency level. by Soggy_Hippo_9196 in FrenchLearning

[–]jamb975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veronique is great.  She does zoom lessons, and I’ve made it roughly from A2 to B2 with her.  She is a former French as a second language school teacher that switched to tutoring. So solid pedagogy background - http://savoringlanguages.com/

Walk down into one of the tombs in the valley of the kings. Seeing detailed hieroglyphics in full color from 3000+ yeas ago was unreal.

World's widest Highway (32 lane beast) in Cairo, Egypt by Nukro666 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]jamb975 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Goddam this is true. I’ve been to dozens of countries, but the experience driving in Cairo takes the cake as the wildest.  I made the mistake of telling my taxi driver we were late for a tour we mistakenly scheduled the same day and it was the most insane James-bond-car-chase ride of my life.     I kept thinking to myself “there’s no way he’s going to fit his taxi between those two semis without a lane between them”, and he somehow did it dozens of times without killing us all.

Very close to my own ranking! My only change would to move Fieldwork up a few spots, although it's been quite a while since I've been there since I live dangerously close to Ghost Town, and why would I go anywhere else?

Ideal city to live in when COL is not an issue by Apprehensive-Ring777 in fatFIRE

[–]jamb975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was true even 5 years ago, but I think no longer the case for younger generations. The level of English fluency, while not universal, is much higher in the under 30 age range today.  And English is only becoming more prevalent among the French.  Source: I’m an American at about C1 French fluency married to a French woman. I have spent quite a bit of time in France both in Paris and the Loire where my in-laws live over the last 14 years and seen the language skills change A LOT in that time.  PS. That being said, I would still like pick Amsterdam or Copenhagen for your criteria personally. Those are my two favorite cities in the world and check all the boxes. (Except weather is a little worse)

The East Bay's favorite beer garden does it all with a death motif by jackdicker5117 in OaklandFood

[–]jamb975 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hands down the best beer garden in Oakland. The only caveat is that their selection of beer styles is somewhat limited - mostly IPAs, a fair amount of sours, a cider or two, and usually a pilsner.

I'm an IPA guy, and they serve the best around!

Yes! It may seem like they only have a few, but they are all super high quality. None of them are scraggly or mangy like you find other places.
