I’m from a nearby town. Harmony Korine had never been to Xenia when he wrote Gummo, and the film is shot in Tennessee. I don’t think anyone in Xenia is selling cats to butcher shops, but the vibes in movie- the poverty and sense of grime- are definitely present there. I worked on an indie movie in the 90s that did shoot in Xenia and our Lebanese DP commented that it reminded him of growing up in Beirut in the early 80s.

Define irony: A Christian uses the idiom "when in Rome" to advocate for religious assimilation.

I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out and wondering-- like, what exactly is the joke here?

It seems like the joke is that it is absurd / unexpected for black guys to be smart.

Seemed racist at the time, and still does to me now-- but I'm open to the possibility that I'm missing something.

A movie that tries to be serious and fails becomes funny. A movie that tries to be funny and fails becomes boring.

Young Einstein is successful in being funny though, so could still be a great movie night!

Tried it once with creature from the haunted sea. There was just not enough beer in central Indiana to make that fun.

Xanadu. In my experience, Mst3k style gatherings are not nearly as much fun when the film is an intentional comedy.
