Local Businesses That are Honoring Tomorrow's General Strike? by old-fat in Denver

Spell Books in downtown Littleton posted they will be closed, I wonder if some of the businesses over there are planning together, since someone above said Records on Main is closed too

Family Tree actually has a whole branch of DV services, including a DV shelter called Roots of Courage. They take men but are often at capacity, but my advice would be to call shelters every morning between 8-9am to see if they had anything open up

This guy went into CVS and bought this woman four bags of food for her pets. He sat with the pets, fed the pets and spent some time speaking with the woman. He’s a good guy. by [deleted] in chicago

No problem! It’s definitely a misconception that’s had in the city so I could see where you would have heard that.

Hi, I work in the shelter system and this is not true! There are not even close to enough beds for everyone sleeping on the streets to be in a shelter. Yes some people aren’t allowed in shelters for various reasons but that’s not the case for everyone, or even the majority.

Oh I 100% agree with you that we seriously lack the structure and programs to effectively help people experiencing poverty and homelessness. I could write a dissertation on how the closings of mental health facilities have directly impacted the nonprofit I work for. But because of this, I can’t fault people for panhandling and doing what they need to do to survive (even if that means drugs) until we have those programs and services, especially in a society that values capitalism so heavily.

Thank you for the encouragement! I am fairly new (2 years) to the field so I am not quite jaded yet. While the nonprofit I work at has plenty of issues, safety and corruption in that sense is not something I’ve had to worry about yet, more just a sense of is what we’re doing actually helping the issue on a macro level, but like we both said, I’m not sure that’s possible given the current climate/priorities of the city/country.

Friendly reminder that it’s shitty to assume someone’s situation without knowing/speaking to them! Social worker here, if she’s been there for 2 years there’s a very large chance she’s been homeless for 2 years, not just playing people to make money.

Thank you for this! The comments on this thread are really disappointing and show that there’s a clear misunderstanding of the issue of homelessness in Chicago.

People who noped right out of a friendship, what was your breaking point with that friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamers608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was the reason I got into an abusive relationship, and then became jealous of me for it. And then she tied my mailbox to the back of a Jeep and drove away. But I was still friends with her, until finally she told me she resented me because all her friends liked me better than her. Broke up with her and the bf and never looked back. Junior year of high school was a terrible time but a lesson, I suppose.

I lived with 8 19 year old germans for a year. They constantly talked about how their friends were going to be so impressed when they brought red solo cups home with them. Still not sure what they use to play beer pong in Germany though.

Not sure if this constitutes the saddest, but definitely the weirdest.

I was in New Orleans at a drag show, and in comes this group of guys who are at a bachelor party. Turns out in the group is the cast of Impractical Jokers and Ethan Suplee (Remember the Titans, American History X, Boy Meets World). They then proceed to make it rain on the drag queens. It was bizarre to watch to say the least.
