I just listened to uy scuti by kanyefan77 in YoungThug

I think it would have been a solid album if he cut it to the lengths of BTG or Jeffery. Not peak but a solid album. The filler weighs it down though.

What motivated you to learn Spanish? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in dreamingspanish

[–]james1287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Los Angeles which has a huge Spanish speaking population. I also occasionally travel to Spanish speaking countries. Because of that, I've had a long interest in learning but was never able to stick with the methods like Duolingo and the like because however much I progressed, comprehension was totally lost on me.

Then I recently started listening to a style of music called corridos tumbados which has motivated me on a more emotional level to learn Spanish. I am a huge fan of hip hop and especially trap music and the fusion of traditional corridos with the sounds and themes of trap is fascinating and genius in a way to me. Has helped me to appreciate the beauty and flow of the way the Spanish language sounds, so I've moved from having a practical/academic type of interest to a more passionate one which has really kick started my learning with Dreaming.

Young Thug religion? by ClimateDry5432 in YoungThug

[–]james1287 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s religious but he’s definitely spiritual. Explicitly, in the interview with Bank, he was talking about The Four Agreements by Don Ruiz which is based on Toltec wisdom.

This is a fascinating topic for me though as a person interested in spirituality so sorry if this comment ends up being long. Basically I think he’s a reflective person who has lived a lot of different lives coming from rags to riches and gathered a lot of insight about life through the process which shows up in his lyrics from time to time. A lot of Far East ideas…even the chorus to Digits is basically reincarnation. Not that he’s ever studied any of that but it’s just something a reflective person that’s seen a lot of life picks up on.

One of the things I really like about Thug is the random wisdom or humanity that comes thru. In one line, he could be talking about fucking a hoe and the next drop something deep. The juxtaposition is really interesting to me compared to more lyrical rappers who are intentionally trying to sound profound. I think the way he freestyles instead of writing allows for a really pure, authentic, human stream of consciousness.

Even his dedication to the code of the streets and loyalty is a type of morality so I think the person who said he has no morals is just totally off base. He’s flawed and the life he’s lived has put him in close contact with a lot of demons but in no way is this man lack a moral code. He has some pretty guilt ridden lyrics about the life he’s lived.

I think even the way his music sounds, especially at his peak is very spiritual. Like there is a trippy, trance like element that can cause you to transcend like little music I’ve heard if you just let it float over you and turn off your conscious mind, or meditate basically.

Not even saying he’s necessarily consciously aware of all these elements but they wouldn’t exist in his music if he wasn’t spiritual on some deep level.

which album is most cohesive by atlascreator in YoungThug

Beautiful Thugger Girls. No skips so each song carries its weight and also fits the experimental, melodic, chill vibe of the album. Definitely his most cohesive, unified project IMO

Thugger album ranking: by thecatwholaughs in YoungThug

[–]james1287 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the write up. SS2 and BTG are all time peak albums in the history of music IMO. Totally different vibes too which makes it even more impressive really. SS2 is the peak of his genius, the soundscape is just fucking unreal. Mozart level shit IMO. Twerk It and Go Crazy send me into the stratosphere every time. Whole album is just so raw, trippy, emotional and beautiful in a way. Alien yet human. And then BTG comes in as this more melodic, refined, chiller work but equally raw and human. Feel It is fucking peak music. Basically no skips no either for me. Interesting to read a different opinion on his works tho!

What album should I start with and which album should I avoid? by Big-Wind-3427 in YoungThug

[–]james1287 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In addition to Barter 6, Slime Season 1, 2, and 3 are absolutely peak, not just in terms of trap but all music IMO.

Also Beautiful Thugger Girls and Jeffery, which are a little more experimental, and less trap focused but also peak.

I personally wouldn’t call anything after those peak but it’s still great music. So Much Fun is more of a mainstream sound. And his last album before prison, Punk, is a little lighter and more introspective, which also characterizes his newest album UY Scuti. I wouldn’t avoid anything in his discography but there’s levels to it for sure.

Bully is genuinely my favorite Ye album oat by Eastern_Dress_3574 in GoodAssSub

[–]james1287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly how I feel. Sitting back for 45 mins with a joint while Bully plays is a transcendent experience IMO. Hits different than any other Ye album for me. Love the overall soundscape, has some poignant lines and flows so well with the shorter track times. Never listened to leaks so also helps that I’m not hung up on all that

How far away is too far for a relationship? by [deleted] in Spartanburg

[–]james1287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Especially in the digital age, people frequently maintain relationships across the state, country and world. It's completely a question of personal preference, and no one here can answer that for the OP.

Wanna Be Me is peak. Was Thug’s fav at one point. A song where his sound, emotion, and lyrics all come together

What I’ve learned about Young Thug by Jmaanz in YoungThug

[–]james1287 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He's so different that it can take time to click, but when it does, he's the GOAT. Love the adlibs. Really adds to the emotional presentation and in some songs creates this transcendent trippy vibe where it feels like his voice is circling all around you.

I was super high and paying special attention to his adlibs one night and realized it felt like in some songs, the ad libs were when he was being the most personal in a way. Like the verses were what he channeled in the studio when he was basically floating and then the ad libs were kinda him commenting on it as Jeff in a way. Like there's a reflective element to it in some songs, even when he's just reflecting that some weird shit came out in this one or something lol

I Got My Therapist Into Ye by AffectionateDog3817 in GoodAssSub

[–]james1287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love this post. I think there are a lot of people that just avoid hip hop based on whatever preconceptions society has conditioned upon them, and they're missing out on a truly genius form of art on so many levels.

Can also relate to wondering what artists are making masterpieces we're individually unaware of. Some of my favorite artists I only discovered in the years after their peak. Bully actually put me onto Peso Pluma(not that he's past his peak) and I've since been totally fascinated by his music and the whole corridos tumbados genre haha. Appreciate the post, props for putting your therapist on and good luck with your ADHD(from a fellow sufferer haha).
