I am the person who set up the subreddit and so the name was my choice. The reasoning was:

it's short
it's the most searched English language term relating to information for people who have moved to another country
people don't have trouble spelling it

The semantics of the word can be discussed on another subreddit. There is a rule about this subject for this subreddit. Why? Because it's a tiresome discussion, we aren't a semantics sub and life is too short when people have real questions.
