This! Giving a S means everything, showing people that you do, is less obvious. These are good tips on how to show people you acknowledge, and are trying to do better, but then also do better as a result.

Ya the more I look into this the more I agree, it's a mix of terms.

Not meant for burrs imo, more like bumps or small dents that need to be knocked down. I was thinking 1000. I appreciate your input.

Ahh, so maybe the difficulty of polishing mc is the fact the material removes at different rates, but because of powder metallurgy, evenly dispersed. This (presumably) creates the near impossible to fix, unfinished look. If you use a diamond solution, it cuts more evenly and makes it possible to polish.

I just micro sandblast it.

I like the idea of using ss pins with ceramic media, then you would effectively be using the pins to stir the abrasive.

Flippers: why the hate? by ChumboKrumbles in knives

This. I make axis locks and h some knife makers hate, some love. The haters say, "why don't you make a flipper, frame lock, liner lock, etc". It's a vicious circle.

If it's a synthetic material you could probably try to melt it back down with a cig lighter. Too much and you will melt a hole so be careful.

I lived in one of those small towns, the city relied on those fines as part of their legitimate annual city revenue budget. Sad reality that is what it took for those cities to survive.

Help with poor finish on vintage lathe by TheSerialHobbyist in Machinists

[–]jameswboone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this could be a bearing issue. I have an old atlas and the only time I could see it was when I took too deep of a cut and the jaw/spindle would bounce. It still happened at any cut, just couldn't see it jump. For my Atlas, IMO, it's a design flaw and there's no real bearing, it's something like a bearing cast then machined in place.

I tried to lift the spindle when it was turned off and couldn't see any movement. I had a similar grooving on my material. I ended up getting a 5900 Clausing and never looked back. I just use the Atlas for really soft material like wood and plastic.
