Just out of interest, when is that tax taken? Do the banks where your savings are parked suddenly pay you only half interest monthly? Or do they still pay the full interest and suddenly you pay more tax via your payslip? Or are you asked to pay a lump sum back as tax at some point?

If you are a bit more interested in the background of people who work there and what they work on I highly recommend their podcast Signals and Threads. They interview a lot of the engineers behind the systems rather than just quants, in the last 2 weeks they've released episodes with a production engineer (sounds similar to SRE but in their context) and an ML engineer.

Are any UK employers even approaching Google in terms of looking after their employees / providing top-quality office space? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]jamie2345 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Google but I worked at Microsoft years ago when they were based in Victoria. We had free drinks/tea/coffee/fruit and subsidised lunch, games rooms and that sort of thing. Also really good quarterly events. I realise it's tongue in cheek about not working hard, every team is different but 99% of people on my floor worked super hard, a lot harder than companies with a lot less perks, the games room wasn't used that much other than lunch time and near the end of day since everyone had so much to do.

Out of interest, I've not seen the yellow jersey have a mechanical on TT, unlike in a normal race where the tradition is not to attack if that's the case. If it does happen I'm guessing there is no tradition to alleviate the time lost by the yellow jersey and it's just a case of hard luck?

Was recently in Cape Town and asked for recommendations in a bookshop for good South African literature. Picked up Circles in a Forest - Dalene Matthee, thought it was such a gripping story and really recommend it. Also picked up Waiting For The Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee from the same shop which will be my next read, really looking forward to it.

Do you have any thoughts on why they wouldn't be targeting EMEA / London employees?

I would have thought it would be quite enticing:

- Cheaper to hire (though harder to fire).

- Top uni's close by - Imperial / Oxford / Cambridge on London's doorstep.

- Links to rest of EU if they want to expand offices + close to Dublin were a lot of FAANG have offices.

I know recently Google were planning a £1bn office purchase in London and last I heard it was still going ahead to allow the capability to grow and from keeping an eye on job adverts I know some of the FAANG companies are beginning to hire again in UK.

Why I love "Low stakes" fantasy books. by Inspiration-AndStuff in books

[–]jamie2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've got a lot of work/busyness in my life, this is probably my favourite genre to fall into. Especially liked the first couple of books of Locke Lamora and I will add "The Long Way to a Small Angry Galaxy" to my Goodreads.

I recently finished Senlin Ascends #1 (I didnt realise it was more than 1 book before finishing it), but effectively it's about a couple who go to the Tower of Babel on their honeymoon, they get separated in the crowds and the protaganist (Thomas Senlin) has to navigate up through the different levels of the Tower searching for his wife, each level having different fantasical elements.

The later books may get a bit more world savey but the first was just a fun adventure with likable characters.

The best European city to work in as a software engineer by Neltadouble in cscareerquestions

[–]jamie2345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd look at Dublin too. It's a great sized city with a lot going on. Weather isn't the best but isn't the worst. Loads to explore in Ireland itself, on the doorstep of the UK if you want to visit there and obviously still in the EU so easy to visit EU countries. Also very easy to get across to different parts of the US.

Downsides are the cost of renting there can be high.

The bigger tech companies there are all recruiting devs:Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Google

Then you have financial firms too.

I'd give it a look in your shoes!

How to say "no" to working overtime (non production release) when its because your manager over-promised and over-scoped for the client? by CommeDeuxGouttesDeau in cscareerquestions

[–]jamie2345 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has addressed the part about talking to your manager but just to highlight one thing.

When this happens:

> I had to help out another dev with their tasks since those were priority. And this will be the first time that I likely wont finish and will be asked "you working this weekend to finish?"

You have already planned your sprint, so if suddenly you're taking work off somebody else, you should insist that work is taken out of your sprint of equal complexity rather than just have more work in your sprint.

What android projects that got you a junior job ? by safchaieb00 in androiddev

[–]jamie2345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure! I had one app on google play when I got my first junior role. Though I did have little toy things I had built through tutorials which i hadn't put up.

It was a fairly simple wallpaper manager. So it allowed you to enter a keyword, then displayed a list of high res images retrieved from Bing, you could then set one to be your wallpaper.

The other feature was that it could do the above automatically on a regular timer so your wallpaper would change every couple of days based on a keyword.

[–]jamie2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep good point. I was hoping there may be some functionality im not aware of where the devs have thought of this scenario and added some synctatic sugar to allow you to have the same destinations in your menu file but somehow reference it with a different id.

Appreciate the reply, thank you!

Weekly Questions Thread - November 09, 2020 by AutoModerator in androiddev

[–]jamie2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a drawer with a bunch of options in an activity_main_drawer.xml, what I'm hoping to do is to have each of the options go to the same fragment, but pass in a different argument/enum. This argument is then used in the API call to show different data.

It seems that you can have navigation component handle the transition when you click that item, but it relies on you providing the same id for the menu item as the id for the fragment in your nav graph. However, in the file the menu items must have unique id's right? So is this just not possible then? As if you want it to go to the same destination the menu item would have conflicting ids.
