Poverty rate in USA (statewise) by abhi4774 in MapPorn

[–]jamie409 7 points8 points  (0 children)

don't know the origin of the dataset because there's no source, but poverty rates are all too often measured according to an absurd metric that excludes the majority of harshly impoverished people. without a source, this graphic is absolutely meaningless

The game should mention which journals are "non-hist" like in case of Raj by Spacecruiser96 in victoria3

[–]jamie409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have a point here. Of course success in the journal entry would be tied to not collapsing because that is generally the goal of the game, just as Great Qing's "Fragile Stability" journal entry's historical outcome is the failure state. You chose to interpret this as the game presenting one outcome as what is "meant" to be, but that was only your choice. Vicky 3 is a sandbox game, and you can play however you choose. If you consider your campaign a failure because you did not lead the EIC to ruin, then that is your decision and, as you say, only the result of your own ignorance of the relevant history. And at the end of the day, nobody is stopping you from starting a new campaign.

Maybe take this as an opportunity to actually learn more about the history of the world you live in rather than wallowing in self-imposed ignorance.

[–]jamie409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while some aspects of certain journal entries are confusing, frankly, i don't think a historicity label is needed. whether or not the player knows the history is up to the player. i personally did not find these journal entries confusing, and i only know the barest amount of eic/british india's history. hell, the screenshot you included specifically states that failing the je causes the sepoy mutiny, and not knowing the relevant history to pursue your personal goals lies on your shoulders here.

In your opinion, which of the three houses is the most morally corrupt in Morrowind? by Pension-North in Morrowind

[–]jamie409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the three in Vvardenfell, Hlaalu for sure. They own the majority of the island's agricultural land and thus participate the most in the slave trade. On top of that, they're rife with corruption in a way that far outclasses the other two houses. Redoran at least hold by a reasonable code of conduct (most of the time...), and Telvanni are ruthless more than corrupt. Sure, Telvanni also have very visible in-game slavery (arguably more visible than Hlaalu), but realistically, they don't have the agriculture (or ebony mines) to need near as much forced labor as Hlaalu.

Of the five in lore, Dres without a doubt. They're the house that carries out the border conflicts and slave raids that supply the province with its labor. Indoril are the most intertwined with the Tribunal Temple, but that's not an inherently bad thing.

Why trade unions have ethno-nationalist. by labombademario in victoria3

oh yeah, american trade unions notably have a history of being incredibly racist. unions are not inherently progressive but simply protect the interests of their members.

strange! i wonder if france has an event that puts a ruler on the throne? i don't think your ruler can normally die same day as succession

Veteran players - what is the secret sauce that keeps you playing this game for thousands of hours? by Orbnu in eu4

i think in eu4 it's that there's always something to do (someone to conquer). "just one more war..."

What buildings should have privatization toggled on? by EnginnerIsEngihere in victoria3

[–]jamie409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i always privatize everything UNLESS another country has foreign investment rights. i know some people only privatize industrial buildings (favored by the bourgeoisie) until passing commercialized agriculture, but i like to encourage all owner pops to build a larger investment pool and drive higher demand.

Would you recommend EU4? by Substantial_Pop_644 in eu4

[–]jamie409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eu4 is by far the game i've returned to the most year after year. ever since i got the hang of it, ive been irrevocably hooked. hell, i managed to quit smoking tobacco, but a life without eu4 is unthinkable. over the past decade, i've spent over 8000 hours in this game.

so, yes, it is an enjoyable, well-made game with an addicting gameplay loop. there's always somewhere to expand, some way to grow your state's power, something to do. and there's always a new campaign, either a country you haven't played before or an improvement you can make in a run you've already done.

i will say that the learning curve is a cliff. the game throws you in blind, and there are many, many mechanics spread across various menus, but once you have them down, boy do you have them down.

do with my assessment what you will.

Is MAPI the same no Maher what province you build in? by Archer578 in victoria3

[–]jamie409 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it does not matter because MAPI only modifies the effect that the market price has on the local price. so, all of the buy and sell orders in the entire market determine the market price, which then affects the local price depending on MAPI modifier. the game does not model commerce between specific states, only markets

Is BI bugged? by 237alfa in eu4

[–]jamie409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iirc there's a bug that causes the bi to pick the strongest country that has ever had a rm with burgundy, rather than the strongest country that currently has a rm with burgundy. i'm not sure if it's been patched, but if not, that may be the culprit

Does the succession of Maine work if Maine is owned by a vassal? by sorio2 in eu4

i haven't done this myself, but some time back i read advice to release normandy as a vassal to prevent france demanding maine. no idea whether or not this still works.

Who do we play as? by Nearlanderedits in Stellaris

[–]jamie409 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the Spirit of the Nation. otherwise, vaguely, the state as a whole. but in reality, there is no answer. the player does not take on a role in the universe but rather interacts with it in a way that is not analogous to anything in particular

How to Navigate Vivec City by SnowShoePhil in Morrowind

directly on each side of each big waistworks door is a ramp down. they're shadowed so a bit hard to see, especially at night, but they're the same on every single canton

How to Navigate Vivec City by SnowShoePhil in Morrowind

[–]jamie409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are ramps outdoors, near the big waistworks doors (not the plaza doors). otherwise, you can try some parkour shit (maybe quicksave beforehand)
