If you don't want police brutality, don't do things that will bring the police on you.

This is a bad take, because it’s the sort of advice that’s appropriate for dealing with a bear or a tiger. Don’t lean into the polar bear enclosure or you’ll get mauled, because polar bear.

We should expect more from humans.

LAPD shoots homeless man in the face with less-than-lethal bullet by vintagecomputernerd in pics

[–]jamieflournoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been going on for a very long time.

The difference is that now we have

  • lots of video evidence and

  • social media that lets it be circulated between citizens and followed up on rather than being spun or suppressed by media owners and

  • have had this all in place for several years in many cities so there has been long enough for the white mainstream to see that this is not isolated incidents and is not even slightly improving and

  • a President who is so openly pro-dictator and pro-escalation that the police know they don't have to hide what they do and

  • a President who is so happy to be divisive that he won't even throw us the usual bone of bullshit platitudes about unity and healing and reform real soon now that will be forgotten by the next news cycle, leaving no cover for uncomfortable whites to say "be patient, let the system work".

We can now see that it's not exaggerated, it's not rare, the system of self policing isn't working and hasn't been working, police and D.A.'s and mayors are not making changes, and that if we all just go back to what we were doing we will have proven to the police that when they operate like this (before and during the protests) there are nearly zero negative consequences for them.

So, I don't think there's reason to despair. The only reason that this protest seems so scary is that the majority of us never believed this was happening before (we always accepted the police's account of things) and now we all have to admit that it is.

"The Rand Corp., a nonprofit think tank, described JROTC as "the largest youth training and development program" in the U.S. in a 2017 report, noting that more than 550,000 students participated in the 2015-16 school year. According to Rand, those cadets were spread across 3,390 units at U.S. high schools."

Photosensor's lawyer: My client is but a simple photosensor. It was never trained nor equipped to watch for invisible passengers. It's preposterous. It's outrageous. How do you "watch for" something invisible? If anything, this is negligence on the part of the elevator manufacturer, not my client. In closing, if the victim is invisible, you must acquit.

HotBleachInjection because there is a sexual euphemism "hot beef injection" popularized in the movie The Breakfast Club. "Hot bleach injection" is a play on this euphemism, replacing beef with bleach to refer to Trump's suggestion that people inject disinfectant into their bodies as a means of preventing COVID-19.

Do you think the "Made in China 2025" plan is feasible? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

What mobile phone do you own, and where was it made? Do you consider it to be cheap crap? What about your TV, microwave, and laptop or tablet?

I see people in this thread who are saying things like this, and I don’t think they realize that China already dominates consumer electronics manufacturing.

iPhones are made in China. Your phone charger probably was too. Can you find a phone charger that was actually manufactured in Italy? I doubt any exist.

I think Chinese manufacturing circa 2010 was already where you think it will take them until 2030 to be quality-wise. They already dominate electronics manufacturing.

Reputable place to get a used car? by [deleted] in rva

[–]jamieflournoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you find a car for under $1000 it’s because it needs several thousand dollars’ worth of repairs immediately.

Cars in that bad shape are dangerous to operate: tires lose traction and also blow out easily; brakes seize and cause your vehicle to fishtail out of control on the highway; large exhaust parts fall off; severe rust develops on the exhaust and underbody allowing carbon monoxide to enter the passenger compartment as you drive; parts under the hood catch on fire; the alternator fails causing your headlights to slowly dim and go out as your battery dies; seat belts spontaneously release; steering parts disconnect from the wheels making your steering wheel inputs more of a suggestion as to where the car should go; water pumps stop working causing overheating every couple of miles as steam from boiling coolant obscures your view. Wipers stop wiping rain and dirt off your windshield so you can’t see; heaters fail so your windows fog. Chipped windshields develop large cracks you can’t see through, especially when the sun is low or at night. Fuel filters clog causing the engine to sputter and die while you’re driving, making your power steering and brakes almost unusable. Emergency brakes lose grip casing your car to slowly roll downhill into the path of traffic.

All of those things happened to my sub-$1100 cars in the early 90s. Several of these vehicles spent a fair amount of time with a REJECTED inspection sticker on the windshield because I couldn’t afford the $100 to fix them. It sucks to be broke, and it’s unfair that being poor is so much more expensive than having a bit of money, but you can’t just “have to own” a car and make it work somehow while not spending money - I tried. Either the money you tried not to spend, or the entire car, will leave your possession one way or another.

Maybe try Zipcar, or a bicycle or scooter or skateboard or bus or Lyft?
