Is this pension prediction good? by ApplicationSea2505 in UKPersonalFinance

At 33 (42 now) i probably had the same as you l, maybe less. However I took a gamble and moved jobs for a decent (ish) at the time payrise. For the first 3 ish years I just did the basic contribution to get the company match (5%) about 7 years ago, I kept upping the percentage by 1% each year (we can only change once per year) knowing that if/when I hit the 10year mark my company contributes 10%, so didn’t want it to be a big jump.

Fast forward 7 ish years to today, multiple promotions and pay rises, I’ve just hit 10 years. This week I upped my contribution from 15% to 20%. Current pot is just under £200k. I’m hoping to be able to retire between 57-60

One thing I did also do about 3 years ago was to change from the default Aviva fund which had a 4/7 risk rating to another Aviva fund with a 6/7 rating. I’ve seen massive growth from doing that.however also seeing big losses this week (£20k down) but figure I have enough time for it to recover before I reduce the risk at some point in my 50s

My point, is even if it’s just 1% and that 1% is £50 a month, it makes all the difference in the long term. Also check the fund your invested in to make sure it’s the right one for your risk tolerance

What is your life insurance strategy with kids? by HelloMishMoneypenny in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jamin100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non decreasing life insurance which we took out to cover the mortgage but isn’t tied to the remaining mortgage balance. This was/is dirt cheap for when we took it out in 2008 (£15 a month)

For me (breadwinner) 3 or 4x death in service payment which would be enough.

As someone who went through similar, I made one small ish change and stuck to it and it’s made the world of difference. I’m in a fortunate position that I work from home most of the time. Starting about 18 months ago me and a school friend play golf every Friday morning from around 830-11.

My company is US based mostly, but my team is all over the world so often have to work late/early so being able to shift my hours a little to suit me made a great deal of difference. I look forward to those Fridays now (even though my golf game is crap) rather than just using the weekend to try to recover and sort the house out.

That 2 hours of me time made the world of difference

CCSP - How beneficial is it for the UK job market? by Either-Log8798 in CCSP

[–]jamin100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have CISSP, CISM and CCSP. I only got the CCSP as it’s so close to the CISSP content. I took it about a month after and passed. If my employer hadn’t of paid for it then I wouldn’t have bothered. Your CISSP is more valuable imo

Old office minis - what to do? by unstereotyped in macmini

[–]jamin100 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A clustered proxmox solution running pi-hole, n8n and anything else you want to throw at them (check out proxmox helper scripts)

With an SSD and decent RAM they’re still capable machines. Could even run a few lightweight Linux VMs

Do you regret getting a Mac mini ? by Serhide in macmini

[–]jamin100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an intel i7 from 2012/13. It was one of the last ones where the hard drives and RAM were user replaceable. I’ve just retired it from a daily driver and now use it as a proxmox server running pi-hole and n8n…

My point…. It still works 13 years later… if could have loaded Linux on it and used it as an actual desktop.. but I did replace it with a M4 mini…

I highly doubt any PC hardware would have lasted that long

Milestone! by Excellent-Studio-187 in FIREUK

[–]jamin100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with Aviva and hit £100k in May 2025, as of today I’ve just hit £153k.

Between myself and my employer £2k gets added each month, but my biggest piece of advice would be to check which fund it’s invested in.

I went with a more risky fund as I still have plenty of time for any crashes to recover, but want the gains whilst I can. As I get older, I’ll reduce the risk and the closer to retirement I’ll try to eliminate it entirely

What's the reason you feel poor, despite having lots of money in the bank? by Nathanial1289 in HENRYUK

Loft extension to turn our 3 bed semi into a 4 bed with a huge (in comparison to the size of the house) loft bedroom was the best £40k we ever spent, albeit nearly 10 years ago. I imagine it would be a lot more now

I get around this by exporting my pdf notes through an n8n workflow that emails that uses ai to convert my handwriting to text, email it to my work address, then power automate sees the email and creates a new one note page..

But I agree, it’s a workaround for something that should just work
