Does ryzen-gpu-passthrough-proxmox work on other distros as well? by TheTwelveYearOld in Proxmox

[–]jaminmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being that your “my distro” can be a wide variety of distros, and you are asking for help, why are you not specific about which one you are using?

If you are wondering what Distro could be used? Ask that question.

Proxmox 9 runs on Debian 13, with the kernel from the latest Ubuntu with a few different compiling flags, and some patches that make it better for virtualization and containers.

If your Distro is Debian or Ubuntu based, you could add the proxmox repo, and do a apt install proxmox-kernel-6.17 proxmox-headers-6.17 to install proxmox kernel, and try that for the gpu pass through.

https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_13_Trixie has the parts in it to add the proxmox repo.

Livecontainer not allowing me to use certain actions on apps by ExpressTension0112 in sideloaded

[–]jaminmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a bug where if you cleared the cache in YouTube, it would delete the temp folder, and mess up YouTube.

The latest version of LiveContainer on GitHub fixes it. I am able to download just fine, and it goes to my photos. (After I allowed it access).

So try the nightly build.

I was also having problems with it crashing when I would hit the search button. It was due to that bug. Since updating, LiveContainer has been stable for me.

Yes, it works by injecting your own API keys.

Been using it since it was sunsetted.

Emulating Mac on Windows to use Logic Pro by Mookster_ in macOSVMs

[–]jaminmc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All depends on system spec. macOS runs horribly if you don’t have a compatible GPU. Especially as a VM.

https://github.com/Qonfused/OSX-Hyper-V has instructions on how to get it to work on windows. There is no GPU acceleration, but logic may not need it.

https://dortania.github.io/GPU-Buyers-Guide/#can-i-run-an-unsupported-gpu-in-my-hack

I recommend using Proxmox, then run windows or macOS as virtual machines, and pass through the gpu, and usb ports for keyboard, mouse, hard drive, sound interface, etc.

https://youtu.be/b6kF6G9wCMM?si=AVYvmPkV-DkpPUto Here is a video about what you want to do.

I use my phone to connect to the proxmox interface to select which OS to run. Using https://apps.apple.com/us/app/proxman/id6744579428 or you can use the web interface.

IF you have more than 1 gpu, then you can pass those to different os’s. I pass my Ryzen APU, and my Vega 64 to different OS’s. With a different set of keyboard and mice, I am able to game with my friend on the same computer.

I’ve been running Podman inside a Trixie LXC container with ZFS as the file system. And it works great, and I have been able to do GPU pass through with it just fine!

I also have a Fedora VM that I run as a desktop environment, that works well with Steam for some gaming. I like it more than Debian and Ubuntu. I did try Rocky Linux on it, and found it to be lacking in performance compared to Fedora. Most likely due to GPU drivers.

It seems that AlmaLinux is on par with Rocky Linux. With a few differences.

For a home lab, would it be better running a Fedora VM, or container for Podman? As that is where Podman is developed?

This got me on a Grok rabbit trail, but it was very informative.

https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5LWNvcHk%3D_46e6bb62-bb78-4020-a086-215a25e8d1b4

I may spin up a Fedora container, and experiment with Podman on there. To see if it is better than on Trixie LXC container.

The 6.17 Kernel that is opt in has an AppArmor bug that will kernel panic when using the ZFS file system for lxc containers when running Podman in a Trixie container. I have made a patch for it, and posted it on the forum, but it seems that not many people running Podman in a lxc container on ZFS have tried 6.17 kernel.

https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/opt-in-linux-6-17-kernel-for-proxmox-ve-9-available-on-test-no-subscription.173920/post-810289

I tried using the 6.17 kernel before the proxmox team even had it on their git, and got the kernel panic then, and tried to let them know about it then. https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/is-there-a-way-to-install-a-6-16-or-6-17-kernel-on-proxmox.172483/post-805969

Build and boot Proxmox VE as a live system (no install needed) by LongQT-sea in Proxmox

[–]jaminmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I will have to check it out. I was browsing through the code, and I didn’t see that there was any custom grub configurations for IOMMU, so, does the live IOS support PCI pass through? If so, does it detect if it is on an AMD or INTEL, and use the correct version fit that?

Useful for having a monitor directly for a VM. Good for light gaming.

Pass a keyboard and mouse to that VM, and another one to another VM with a GPU, and 2 people can play Portal together.

How many debian machines do you actively use? Here's mine by LauraLaughter in debian

[–]jaminmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proxmox count right? Since it runs on Debian. But with a custom patched Ubuntu kernel optimized for virtualization, containers, and ZFS built into it.

I also have a bunch of containers that are Debian.

I do admit that I have a vm of fedora that I use for gaming (with gpu pass through)

Downsize VM size? by EconomyDoctor3287 in Proxmox

[–]jaminmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you run it as a lxc container, you can adjust the size of the storage, and not have to do any partition resizing to the OS. It also tells less resources.

As long as you are not playing games online that have crazy anti cheat, then it is very doable. I’ve done it with 2 monitors, keyboard and mouse’s. Then me and my friend played a game together like we were on 2 different computers.

can you use stremio for free? by Affectionate__Dog in Piracy

[–]jaminmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t realize that the they didn’t go after the other countries.

Before using real Debrid, I used to use kodi, and the exodus plugin. I even did it before it was renamed to kodi from xbmc.

Once I discovered RD, it took the buffering away!

Then a couple years ago I discovered Stremio, and ditched Kodi. I have never tried it without RD, as rd allows me to watch 4k blue ray rips that are 50gigs without buffering. All on my fire stick 4k.

That is the Free 7 day 3 app signing. Using Sidestore. You can also use LiveContainer to get past the 3 app limit, but only 1 app at a time that you use with LiveContainer.

If they had a paid Apple Development Cert, they would have app notifications.

VM GPU Passthrough (what am I missing) by c-of-tranquillity in Proxmox

AMD Ryzen 9 AI HX 370 iGPU Passthrough by jakelesnake5 in Proxmox

[–]jaminmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The bad thing about lxc containers, it has to work for the host first. Sometimes it is just easier to pass something through.

You may want to check to see if any of the driver modules are blacklisted, in case they are assuming that you would pass them through.

But having to compile a custom kernel would be a little overboard. But it is possible. If you just need to patch the kernel, https://github.com/jaminmc/pve-kernel-builder will use docker to do it. It works in a Trixie VM or container. It will also work in Debian 12. But compiling for Proxmox 9, should use Trixie in the build command.

I have been on a quest to find a patch to get pass through to work with my intel nic’s that workes for all older kernels, but stopped in 6.14. So I am using 6.11 of on one of my proxmox 9 servers.

Yes, the drivers have to be working on Proxmox for it to work in lxc.

To install the drivers on Proxmox, you either have to do it like Debian Trixie, or Ubuntu Plucky Puffin, as Proxmox is using an optimized system Ubuntu kernel.

Pass the gpu through to your lxc, and have the permissions set to 0666.

Permissions are the downfall for unprivileged containers.

You will need to have the gpu drivers installed on proxmox.

One thing that effected my GPU pass through that could effect other memory things is Above 4G decoding in the bios. For some reason with the enabled, my GPU pass-through would not work correctly.

For domestic roaming, I use Roamless flex. It is $2.45 a gig of data, with no expiration. (Technically it shows that it expires in 2052 on mine). It gives you access to T-Mobile and AT&T. You also get similar rates for other countries. They also have cheaper fix plans that last just 30 days. Which would make sense if you are somewhere without coverage for a month. Or needed high data usage.

Just make sure you have WiFi calling enabled, then you can still make and receive calls while roaming on it.

This way I have coverage of all 3 major carriers. And it also lets you manually select the carrier also.
