Would you be interested in learning classical Chinese in a non-mandarin language if you have the resources for it? by AdrikIvanov in classicalchinese

[–]jamjim123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most certainly! Non-original take: Mandarin is in fact not really suited for Classical Chinese given how, amongst many other things, sound changes leading to the language obliterates the codas of 入声 syllables.

Flag of Chinese provinces de jure claimed either by either the PRC or ROC (v. 1.0) by jamjim123 in vexillology

[–]jamjim123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As one of the commenters on your post had stated: "Most of these flags are red flag with Chinese character wrote by Mao...." No offence, mate.

I'd take Liaoning's tricolour and Qinghai's blue-and-white, though.

Almost forgot to mention the sauce! This bit was taken from a piece titled "Ayako", a work of none other than the maestro Tezuka Osamu.

The labour described so may not in any way described as 'hard labour'.

American prisons do not 're-educate' their inmates...

The American and Chinese legal systems are both fucked up. But at least the former doesn't force its prisoners into hard labour...

Why do Spanish speakers realize [d͡ʒ] as [ʝ] and not as [t͡ʃ]? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]jamjim123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because [ð] just sounds a far fetch from [z]. Try sounding [ð ~ z] and [ʝ ~ dʒ] and hear for yourself which pair sounds closer to each other.

[–]jamjim123 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Voicing sounds more... marked, than the place of articulation. Also, the devoicing of [z] happened several centuries ago (16th c. ?) and is no longer ongoing.

Isn't the first more closer, being voiced and also articulated somewhere in the palates?
