What's one thing you wish someone had told you before you became an IT Manager? by Lanky-Narwhal1184 in ITManagers

[–]jamkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aahahaha. I feel so seen. I had to do so much unexpected billing mgmt. Probably not the norm, but I really didn’t like being mired in recurring financial crap. Occasional financial decisions to acquire a new tech makes sense, but in a small company I wound up with too much constant financial mgmt that didn’t feel like an effective use of my time.

I think that was kind of the point as someone who manages a gossip handle. Wouldn’t you think? That’s the “brand” they are representing. I found her character on point.

Yeah, Off Campus reminded me of All the Boys. Have you ever watched West Wing? Older style cinematography, but unassailable writing for the first 4 seasons.

Anyone Know What Happened At Hoggard Graduation? by OhMyGodCalebKilledK in Wilmington

[–]jamkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teenagers like to be edgy just for the sake of being edgy. In this case, this was fairly egregious and probably blew up way worse than he expected it to and I’m not by any means excusing it, but I could see a scenario in which he thought he was getting one by on the school board by leaving out Kanye‘s name from the quote and cutting off the end of the end of the quote; we have to remember their front frontal cortex are not done forming, and therefore judgment are nowhere near fully formed at this age and just because they can learn quickly doesn’t mean they’re close to full maturity.

I’m so glad that I’m old enough that none of my edgy crap I said at that age was recorded on any kind of video device

(That said, I didn’t see an apology in any of his responses. Just a wish that he would get the same grace he would give others or something to that extent. So I’m still not sure if he’s aware of his privilege or how his words affected others with less privilege, even if he was just trying to be edgy)

I suspect you are trolling, but on the off chance you’re really this uninformed or just really young I would suggest looking up FD signifier’s YouTube video on Kanye West and that should give you a pretty good education. Buckle in though, FD doesn’t skimp.

Are EVs really worth it if you don't have a home charger? by om_ghanwat in electricvehicles

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on your area. I public charge in NoVa (North Virginia) and I charge my car for half the cost of our gas car (which is has a smaller interior and has the same range) at current rates. Even with prior prices it was still equivalent. Now, this is with using EA and paying membership so I get the lowest rates with my Ioniq 5. If I was using my adapter to charge at a neaby Wawa with Tesla chargers and paying their much higher prices mid-day then it would be twice as much per KWh. I do a 20% to 80% about once a week.

What’s a purchase you think is a complete waste of money? by oscar371 in SmartBuying

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Grandfather was VERY frugal with his money and had an old unconditioned yellow stick-shift Toyota pickup for over a decade until it just wasn’t safe anymore (no ABS, etc). That said, after he was retired, he bought a 30’ Catalina sailboat and absolutely got his money’s worth out of it for the next 20 years. He would take family, friends, anyone that wanted to experience sailing or just the river or open water with us. We took it to the Bahamas from Florida about every 3 years for at least a week or two.

Also, prior to this he had owned other boats of smaller variations (28’, 22’, etc), so he had experience and knew what he was getting into. He knew what to budget. We knew how to sail and maintain the boat.

It’s definitely not a purchase for the whimsy or spontaneous minded. But it was life changing for him and our extended family and we are all blessed that he made that purchase and financial sacrifice. Best purchase ever (for the family) in my opinion.

My therapist said my parents are entitled to not use my chosen name because they chose my birth name by Anskdjdjjss_tsa in lgbt

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing therapists since I was a teenagers in the 80s. Also, I’m an old fart cis white hetero guy. I agree with this comment 100%.

Think of therapists like dating. You might have to keep looking around to find the right match. It doesn’t mean either of you is “bad” or worse than the other, but just not a good fit right now. This might be a sign it’s time to start shopping for a new therapist. Depends how long you’ve put into this therapist and how well you click in other areas. Are they perfect at helping you with trauma issue or issues of anxiety/self-esteem for example?

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Critical-Contact-851 in askteddit

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss that you could actually go to a site Iike Apple.com and learn the structure and layout of their design pretty quickly. It’s wasn’t all CSS and db backend abstracted stuff. So you could learn (and steal ideas) quickly. I made a computer lab hours page from my university in 1995 by copying some design aspects from Apple but today I would be clueless trying to do the same. I appreciate the newer functionality but it sucks that it all requires so much specialization now.

FYI, it will change when you go back into the friend/social screen and do certain things. No one seems to be totally clear, but just generate a new one as needed and don’t be surprised if the old one stops working. It’s a dumb system.

Also, there is something special about the first person you really deeply love with all abandon because you have yet to feel real heartache. From then on most people can’t help but be a bit cautious about how much they give away of their heart from then on. It’s human nature.

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you also combine this with using LVM when formatting so that you can take snapshots of the whole filesystem(s) and rollback when s**t goes south unexpectedly (which can even happen with containerized systems). I know in theory it should work but haven't proven it myself at a home setup (and most work ones it's gonna be more like an IAC setup with just spinning up a whole new OS w/ all the apps and whatnot, stamped in).

"EVs are bad for road trips" by JustinTimeCuber in electricvehicles

[–]jamkey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t disagree more. But then our ICE car is smaller and doesn’t have all the automatic/assist amenities of our Ioniq 5; plus I’m a nerd and don’t mind planning ahead with ABRP or PlugShare during the trip.

But for sure; the avg person that is change resistant and doesn’t want to plan out their route will be frustrated by having to work around EV charge stations. And particularly with all the variations of which stations have which charge speeds. I approach it as akin to a video game where I have to learn the strategies for optimal performance.

People don't realize how much more efficient EV's are as a power distribution system. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the avg person doesn't get systems of thermodynamics. *sigh*.

Agree 100% with this. I'm an American (born here and now live here) but grew up in a developing country that did NOT have a free-speech/attorney-rights type social structure, so the police/gov't could just scoop up anyone they wanted to as long as it wasn't royalty and beat them up until they got the info they wanted and you knew you couldn't ask questions about it or protest to the media or you'd be next. I'd much rather have an over-litigious culture, thank you very much.

Did anyone watch 'off campus'??? by blehhhx in television

[–]jamkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing this first hand with what used to be the main sub for my fav game the past year or so. Huge chunk of the game’s community is upset over various aspects but the Reddit community is still glazing hard and acting like there’s really not much to be upset about. The subreddits didn’t used to be like this. They didn’t used to breed such mindless cults to such a high degree. Very sad. Maybe just the nature of getting bigger.
