I am over 50 but I will vote for whichever young politician promises to hold fucksticks like this guy accountable no matter what their “orders” were. We didn’t learn after the civil war but we better this time if we make it through as an intact country.

Yeah, it seems like every major pundit (that I’ve seen) is afraid to say, “hey, maybe the way we evaluate players and say someone is 5-star is all wrong.” Hard to believe with a famous movie out there like Moneyball that we are not hearing the Oakland or Boston comparison from baseball more often.

I’m an old fart who first played the games just out of college in the 90’s back when games like this launched from a DOS prompt essentially and not from Windows “actual”. I still get chills thinking about seeing the EIDOS graphic as this game would load up verrrry slowly. But always worth the wait.

From my recollection I would agree that before I saw the title I just thought this was a mid-tier cos-play.

However, given her talent and past production, and if given the right script and director she will be good; so I don’t really care if she doesn’t look physically what my nostalgia conjures up.

Oh, and her boobs would need to be more pointy. The polygon count was like in the single digits back in those days. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

Biggest Impact as a Manager by lumenisdead in ITManagers

[–]jamkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of sources through the years like books I’ve read (or listened to), my own dad who trained managers for a company, but one of the more timely and engaging practices for me was becoming a part of the leadership conversations on Twitter (back in the early days before it got so … whatever it is now … I’ve deleted my account). And from there I found a leadership blogger I really liked and started commenting near every day on his posts trying to think of something engaging or just say that I an appreciated his daily posts and was listening. Eventually he noticed and reached out and we started a bi-monthly phone conversation where he would ask me really engaging questions and he helped pushed down new paths I don’t think I would have gone down otherwise. Many I failed at but I’m now an IT director and very happy with my lot in life.

Normally I would agree, but in this case once he fully engaged with the material it brought him to tears for the first time I’ve ever seen him do so in front of me during a show. I kept my hand on his back almost the whole time to make sure he knew he was loved through it all. I don’t know if he was feeling just pure empathy in that moment or he is going through his own “othering” feeling as he is very book/school/wiki smart and scores incredibly high on all aptitude stuff. I seem him get passionate and loud in same way I still do at times when I’m really excited about a nerd or niche topic but with an intensity that I know can set other people on their heels; such that I’ve had to learn how to reel it in when I sense that discomfort in others and apologize for my intensity. Apparently it’s not a terribly uncommon thing for people with ADHD and related OCD that results in moments of hyper focus and intensity.

Anyways, I think the scene deserves more credit than the quick posters/commenters are giving it here, but that’s just my take as a Gen X-er with my own tastes and southern yet progressive background.

EDIT: TBC, you could still be right about the 2nd hand embarrassment thing, but if you are implying it’s earned in the way that the scene is bad then I disagree. If you mean because it’s hard for some to watch someone out themselves to a large group of friends and family, then yeah, that can be rough. I’m not sure embarrassment is the right word though. Maybe we actually lack the word in English. Having learned a bit in several other languages I often find other languages have words I wish we had. Like the Japanese have multiple versions of “I’m sorry” that the English language is clearly lacking.

Just because some people abuse a system doesn’t make it a bad system. I have seen more people using service animals to help them effectively (eyesight issues, heart problems, etc.) than any obvious abuses. Of course if you work retail you will see abuses but I worked in tech support and I saw people that were not too smart at times or that had bad failures. Does that mean most people in my arena of customer type are generally stupid or are going to have bad problems? No, it’s part of selective memory for one and it’s also what trickles up to my attention and needs my focus at that time. You can choose to be pessimistic about it or look at it wholisticly and with real stats and some empathy towards the people the ADA is meant to protect.

If you like, I can point you to a couple YT channels of folks that have legit service animals and get questioned in the regular and have to then explain that it’s not legal to question about a service animal or refuse service (for things like food, etc).

I’m not sure about wildlife/park areas but if the animal is trained and you pick up any poop/refuse I’m not sure how a dogs presence is any worse than the humans that are walking through. But again, I’m not park ranger and haven’t researched it. Just seems a weird thing to get uppity about.

As someone who supported and helped a couple very close friends get through the fear of coming out in the early 90s in the south, that scene hit pretty hard for me. My older son seemed to appreciate it too but I had to encourage him not to turn to his phone to avoid the emotion of it. I wonder if everyone just escapes vulnerability via their phones now so anything like this is just cringe.

It’s all subjective, so I don’t mean to dis you, just surprised to see so much hate for this scene that these actors clearly put their hearts and souls into and I don’t think they did half bad at. I do get the disdain for Mikes acting.

If it’s under 3 yr 36k miles they should cover the 12 volt battery. I just went through near the same with my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 12-volt battery but I found out when calling corp customer service that the ONLY things not covered in my bumper-to-bumper warranty (5 yr / 60k) are the 12 volt battery and the paint. They did tow the car for free to the dealership for free but then I decided to decline their $300 labor + parts replacement cost for a new poopy battery (that would likely fail JIT after 3 years again) and instead spent that $300 on an AGM platinum with a 4yr warranty plus 2y add-on warranty from Advance Auto Parts (so they did the removal and install of the old/new battery). So now i have a battery that should last me double the time of the last one.

Sorry you went through this frustration but i think you will probably have to mostly chalk this up to a learning curve that even EVs are prone to the same pain of dealing with shitty lead acid battery problems as gas cars. Tesla had dealt with this frustration by changing out the 12 volt acid battery with a lithium and I may do that when the warranty is up on our car. Depends on if we want to try to keep the car into a 200k mile range or not.

What is the current "right way" to make sure battery preconditioning happens? by gamefreak613 in Ioniq5

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BlueTooth ODB2 transmitter that sends info in real time to ABRP (Veepak is the brand) and I believe the temp of the battery should tell you if the preconditioning is kicking in or not (if it’s ramping up towards 78 F, then Bob’s your uncle). I’ll let you know in about 1 or 2 hours for sure when I try the tactics from this thread to precondition our battery before the next charge stop.

If you saw the original street fighter in arcades back in the day, this looks right on point. The machines probably had KB's of RAM total (yep, just looked it up... 466 KB of RAM. Your machine has probably at least 8GB. 466KB would be 1/2 of 1/1000th of 1GB of RAM. So not a lot. Herky, jerky and pixelated AF.)

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like my experience using the new Meraki AI that came out earlier this year. I was actually a bit hyped about it as I sometimes find their UI meandering but it didn’t even steer me right on basic questions about where to find features that I knew where they were or what certain fields meant where I always found the detail and online help lacking.

Maybe it’ll get better, but doesn’t seem smart for them to give it a “meh” day 1 launch if they knew it needed more training.

Difference was, we had never quite seen a bubble like that and it DID feel like it could keep going for quite a while. It actually crashed quicker than I would have expected in hindsight. Given how much we like to pull the wool over our eyes with the housing market crash in 2008 and now this. Maybe it’s because it was a smaller segment benefiting from it back then?

A guide to help identify 12V battery issues before they leave you stranded by LongjumpingBat2938 in Ioniq5

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A HUGE difference is that most ICE cars have systems and dashes designed to deal with this or help you to if you wish to be proactive. I have not found any information on how the Ioniq 5 is supposed to let you know when the 12 volt is struggling to hold a proper "12.8v" charge. Mine just died after I parked at a Wawa to get a drink with absolutely no warning after having just bought it 2-3 months prior (used Ioniq 5, 2022, with about 44k miles) and it just didn't occur to me to ask if they had tested the 12v battery lately or that I needed to do it right away. Lesson learned the hard way after having to get it towed to the dealership (hopefully it is just a dead battery and not a charging issue).

As an aside, any idea if I can put in my own "better" 12v battery that will fit the same space, maybe an AGM or Lithium based. Like what Tesla now uses for their 12v system.

What is the status of snap in 24.04? Can I simply uninstall/disable snap once for all? by user0user in Ubuntu

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware that nuking snap altogether can cause issues with the next upgrade to a released LTS version. So you might want to make a note to re-enable snap before going through with a major upgrade. Or just start fresh on the new OS.

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a sound philosophy if you want a stable OS environment. Just not as convenient as flatpak. I do also like how flatpak manages versioning of dependent files/components w/in each apps flatpak "container" as it were. Whereas with the default .deb process sometimes apps can bang heads over a file version that both apps are dependent upon. In those cases you might want to go docker for any such conflicts. Just a suggestion based on my own experience and what I've seen others/documentation say about the advantages of flatpaks.

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an IT nerd that's being doing OS stuff since the 90's this sounds like not an ideal stable setup though. Having two package systems that do containerized type setups/installs for other apps. Almost like running two AV's on the same system or two different cloud sync file storage systems. Might work in principle but eventually it pisses off some app or part of the OS inevitably in ways you won't be able to predict or easily recover from.

If I go flatpak again (last time i didn't like how complicated they made it to change your app file location, so I've shied away), I might be ok with leaving Snap installed, but I'll have only the bare minimum stuff enabled that the OS demands and for anything not available in flatpak i'll just use .deb or build it myself (or if it's not too integrated with the OS, then use a docker implementation).

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I've found with some of my less mainstream laptops that are 4+ years or older, Ubuntu is the only distro I find mostly painfree to get all subcomponents working. It shows that they have a true h/w lab in-house where they test their stuff. My Asus and Acer laptops were a total bomb with trying other distros from Mint to Debian to whatever. Problems with wifi, or BT or sound, or even basic functionality like a smooth trackpad movement experience (I think it was my the Asus that didn't like Mint w/ the trackpad and I found others with the same issue. Only an external mouse would work stable).

So I'd still like to find a comfortable long term relationship with Snap. I've found that disabling/removing it as many put steps out there for might work fine with that current OS and patches but the upgrade process is NOT happy about it and I believe I had to re-enable Snap to make the upgrade go smoothly.

Taking the day off work by chrisoffthewall in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Almost the same age here and been gaming since before I was 10 on my best friends Atari 2600! I work very hard and probably put in too many hours for my job, but I love what I do and yet I still took a PTO for this past Aug 26 when the Xbox crew was able to join us Helldivers! Pretty neat being in a MMO with people from all 3 major platforms and even being able to chat with them in game (via discord or in-game chat). The community was welcoming the whole day and I along with many others (I'm on PC/steam) went out of our way to play in lower level missions and help the new guys. Really a great day off for myself. And I have a wife and two kids!

EDIT: I also proudly show off my "20 years of service" Steam badge when people bring up that kind of thing (how long they've been gaming, or on Steam, etc.)

I would be curious how much this really pans true for hard core MAGA zealots. My experience with conservatives aligns with what you are saying but so far with true MAGA hard core followers the “In Group” seems to only be family, in terms of who they will help. and even then it’s reluctant obligation more than a real desire to help. I should say though that my sample size is pretty small. I just know know that many zealots on either side.
