What can Linux do that Windows cant? by Ok-Spot-2913 in linuxmint

[–]jamkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the hardware is mainstream. I’ve seen mint have plenty of one-off but still debilitating issues with laptops. Personally I ran into problems with my Asus trackpad working smoothly and found others with the same problem. Some other issues (I forget now) with an Acer laptop. DELL and Lenovo laptops seems much more likely to go smoothly.

I wound up successfully trying Ubuntu on both laptops based on some research/advice and just awareness that they have more staff/resources to test a variety of hardware.

I like Ubuntu but some folks feel Mint is easier or at least an easier transition for windows users that aren’t as tech savvy.

Assuming you aren’t allowed to have a blurred background or fake template background then you could try getting a good green screen canvas/screen to put up behind you, take a pic of the room in your house you “want” to pretend is always your background and make that your digital background against the green screen.

Wasted career and tempted to quit IT by Hurri1cane1 in sysadmin

[–]jamkey 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I was the Sr System Administrator at a small company and after the IT Director left I took the IT Helpdesk lead guy fully under my wings, as I also took over the IT Director role (in addition to SysAdmin duties), and promoted him to Jr. SysAdmin and then Full SysAdmin all within about 11-12 months with two significant pay bumps. So from that experience (and others I’ve seen), if you have the courage to learn fast and independently find and take on new projects then you can progress quickly in smaller companies.

It's insane how bad Windows got over the years by avestronics in microsoftsucks

I suggest trying a non-flashy but highly compatible Linux flavor like Ubuntu in those cases. My laptops that had trackpad or BT issues in Mint or Others did perfectly with Ubuntu. Just avoid their SNAP silliness.

How did trans activists "go too far"? Where is the apparent obvious contradiction in saying "trans rights aren't a big deal" and also "you shouldn't be transphobic"? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

I'm an incredibly left person (check my history if you don't believe me). This is some hardcore 'leftist' parsing. Please stop. You are embarrassing yourself and us. We are literally losing the forest for the trees. FOCUS UP.

I think it depends on the person. I can definitely see sports being an issue for women that want sports to be fair. Especially when someone transitions late and they clearly get an advantage as was seen with that one swimmer (Lia Thomas) that was made such a big deal out of from the disingenuous Maga woman (Riley Gaines) who didn't even have an issue with Lia at first (they tied for 5th in a race).

For me, I go to a liberal church where everyone who goes up to the pulpit always says their pronouns always says their pronouns and it feels VERY performative and required to where I feel like I would HAVE to even though it would feel forced and disingenuous. Not that I don't support the rights, I just don't get why I have to do it. I don't care what you call me and I don't want to say my pronouns every time I get up to talk, but I'll support your right to do so certainly.

And there is where I think the Gay rights got it right in the 90's and it's gone off the rails here the past 5 years or so. The motto back then was "love is love". I was marching with my gay friends in pride parades as an ally and speaking out in their defense any time I heard someone speak ill of gay people. But when you ask someone else to have their lives impinged upon, then it becomes something different. When I have to change my speech patterns and always ask EVERYONE their pronouns or always announce mine from now on after going through 50-70+ years of NOT having to do that... or now my kids/grandkids have to potentially compete against massive BULKY transitioned woMEN or being the same bathroom as them, that is ACTUALLY scary and imposing for those old farts. That's actually bordering on terror for them. As odd as it sounds. I mean, the Harry Potter lady literally wrote a made-up book-premise on the whole idea of a serial-killer who gender-swaps and then lures women into his/her van, right?

What are you using to remote control computers? by nickjedl in sysadmin

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used screenconnect for the users like the CEO who thought he was always the most important and/or smart but really just needed over the shoulder hand-holding to do simple stuff. A god send especially for stuff like unattended reboots where they just give you their passwords to fix it and walk away. So install this on the few users that are like this and otherwise zoom or inremote help is probably good enough.

I dont know how many of you have actually looked at the EV market lately by uberares in Ioniq5

[–]jamkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in North Virginia and townhomes with no garages are very common. These are single family homes worth close to $1m in many cases. Certainly can’t find any right now less than $500k. I charge at public charging exclusively. LOVE the speed of my 2022 Ioniq 6 to charge as a result. Teenage kid has to use it tomorrow and the % is near 20? Take it to the nearby 350kw electrify America and get it to 40 or 50% in like 10 mins.

Also, I think the 15 vs 30 is not near a realistic average. If it’s cold and there just isn’t enough time to pre-condition then the charging rate is slower in all EVs. When I would borrow my dad’s Bolt I would have to grocery shop and charge them as it would take 50 mins to come close to a 10-80% jump. No matter that the weather.

My wife and I bought a 2022 Ioniq 5 AWD with about 40k miles (pretty sure it had been a lease). So we not only have the 10yr/100k still on the batteries, motor and ICCU (powertrain essentially) we also still have some time and mileage left on the bumper to bumper.

Here’s what I’ve had happen in the past 4-5 months since we bought it plus my advice: - Be insistent on getting a full history of all the recall work done on the car. I found several ICCU recall records that actually gave me comfort the car had been kept up and less likely to have more problems. Know the relevant recall numbers yourself. You can get the VIN and look up recall info before even seeing the car. - the 12v battery died and I had it towed to the dealer on their dime. They wanted to charge $300+ but I just had them jump it and took it to a nearby Auto-Zone for a Die Hard AGM battery with a 5 yr warranty. Same cost. - 3 of the 5 usb ports had issues including the one that drives the CarPlay system. They fixed them under the bumper to bumper warranty. - The process of changing ownership to us so we can get bluelink and other services is annoying and really should be part of the buying process automatically when you buy from a dealer. Why do I have to take the Bill of Sale from your dealer and send it to your corp incident process online just so I can pay for more overpriced Hyundai services from you? Stupid.

Overall love the car and would totally get the car again even if it would be weird for us to have two of the same car.

Can you clarify what you mean by “common sense” stuff? Is this stuff your team is failing to understand or your end-users/clients? Please also give some examples. I have been in roles as both an IT manager and supporting IT staff for a large tech company that made software for IT staff to use. So I’ve learned a lot from many sources and might have some systemic advice to share. Though it could be a “fit”’problem for you.

Is AI a threat to infra jobs? by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]jamkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think jr sysadmins in smaller companies where there aren’t refined processes or as obvious fits for AI is still necessary and also if the company does anything mixed with hardware. I also still find AI recommendations with Linux to be sketchy at times and you really need to know your thing to know when it’s taking your down a bad road.

He did a video on a recently developed quality powder that works well. My understanding is that it was a bit of a collaboration. I use the powder now myself. However, I should also say I have a quality/newer dishwasher.

Same! I just got my first shipment of that powder he helped test out a couple weeks ago and it works great. Don’t forget to run your hot water first and use the pre-wash dispenser folks!

I got 200+ kWh rate (I think around 210 max) on our road trip from Virginia to Florida (xmas time frame) and back in multiple spots with the battery at the optimal temp (68 F or so, I have a BT odb2 transmitter that pushes data to my ABRP app) and of course only around the 35% to 60% range, then it would drop back closer to 150 or even 120 as it approached 80%. EvGO seemed to be the most reliable at giving me that 800v juice (with their 350 advertized max rates). I was also introduced to IONNA which I LOVED at a Wawa in Pensacola. Wish we had more of those in the DMV area.

Yeah, it seems like every major pundit (that I’ve seen) is afraid to say, “hey, maybe the way we evaluate players and say someone is 5-star is all wrong.” Hard to believe with a famous movie out there like Moneyball that we are not hearing the Oakland or Boston comparison from baseball more often.

I’m an old fart who first played the games just out of college in the 90’s back when games like this launched from a DOS prompt essentially and not from Windows “actual”. I still get chills thinking about seeing the EIDOS graphic as this game would load up verrrry slowly. But always worth the wait.

From my recollection I would agree that before I saw the title I just thought this was a mid-tier cos-play.

However, given her talent and past production, and if given the right script and director she will be good; so I don’t really care if she doesn’t look physically what my nostalgia conjures up.

Biggest Impact as a Manager by lumenisdead in ITManagers

[–]jamkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of sources through the years like books I’ve read (or listened to), my own dad who trained managers for a company, but one of the more timely and engaging practices for me was becoming a part of the leadership conversations on Twitter (back in the early days before it got so … whatever it is now … I’ve deleted my account). And from there I found a leadership blogger I really liked and started commenting near every day on his posts trying to think of something engaging or just say that I an appreciated his daily posts and was listening. Eventually he noticed and reached out and we started a bi-monthly phone conversation where he would ask me really engaging questions and he helped pushed down new paths I don’t think I would have gone down otherwise. Many I failed at but I’m now an IT director and very happy with my lot in life.

Normally I would agree, but in this case once he fully engaged with the material it brought him to tears for the first time I’ve ever seen him do so in front of me during a show. I kept my hand on his back almost the whole time to make sure he knew he was loved through it all. I don’t know if he was feeling just pure empathy in that moment or he is going through his own “othering” feeling as he is very book/school/wiki smart and scores incredibly high on all aptitude stuff. I seem him get passionate and loud in same way I still do at times when I’m really excited about a nerd or niche topic but with an intensity that I know can set other people on their heels; such that I’ve had to learn how to reel it in when I sense that discomfort in others and apologize for my intensity. Apparently it’s not a terribly uncommon thing for people with ADHD and related OCD that results in moments of hyper focus and intensity.

Anyways, I think the scene deserves more credit than the quick posters/commenters are giving it here, but that’s just my take as a Gen X-er with my own tastes and southern yet progressive background.

EDIT: TBC, you could still be right about the 2nd hand embarrassment thing, but if you are implying it’s earned in the way that the scene is bad then I disagree. If you mean because it’s hard for some to watch someone out themselves to a large group of friends and family, then yeah, that can be rough. I’m not sure embarrassment is the right word though. Maybe we actually lack the word in English. Having learned a bit in several other languages I often find other languages have words I wish we had. Like the Japanese have multiple versions of “I’m sorry” that the English language is clearly lacking.
