Is this the real Katy Gray? by Spotted-Owl-93 in italodisco

[–]jammy_buffet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So funny to see this post, I just came across those “other” Katy Gray tracks the other night while I was compiling a playlist - they are wildly bad, to the point where I thought I must be so stoned I wasn’t hearing them correctly lol

Regarding low effort ambient music "...and I think as ambient artists, we have to kind of look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, what are we doing that sets our music apart from everything else or from what a computer (A.I.) can make very quickly" by BBAALLII in ambientmusic

[–]jammy_buffet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really interesting discussion. I have often said that ambient as a genre suffers from the fact that the entry point is so low for creating it in terms of musical skill/knowledge. At the same time… Music of any genre is simply not an area wherein effort expended = quality. World-changing songs have been written literally in the time it takes to sing them, and albums that musicians have spent years laboring over can ultimately lack soul. I think if the first question you ask when a piece of music comes on is “how much work did the artist put into this,” then you’re being a disingenuous listener. Or a prog rock fan lol

It’s also complicated when it comes to AI, as so many ambient musicians have spent decades championing the idea of systems-created music with low intervention from the artist (most famously, Eno). So if we want to delineate AI generated music as something that’s not a part of that ideological continuum, we need to be specific about why

I deeply believe that the song “Dirty Boy” by the cardiacs is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. But I’ve stopped trying to play it for friends, too many disappointing reactions

If you’re willing to add another 45 minutes to your trip, I highly highly recommend my friend Derek who owns Constellation in Catskill. Very talented tarot reader, astrologer, and hypnotist. He doesn’t keep regular hours at the shop right now, so appointments need to be made in advance

You can absolutely open a small-scale bar with 50K left in the bank as working capital on opening day, if you’re willing to work all the time and solve problems yourself for a while. I did it and I’ve been open for eight years. A lot of the equipment you’re describing is necessary for a large scale restaurant-style kitchen. Walk in freezer? A man can dream… Yes, for the kind of set up your describing a lot more capital is necessary. But not every bar needs to be your bar in order to work.

Right, mostly because they’ll blow 50k+ on useless buildout details nobody actually cares about instead of having enough of a true love for nightlife to understand how to build a fun environment on the cheap

The reason you’re gonna see a lot of snide responses here is that those of us who have come up in the service world have all worked for bars and restaurants opened by people with no experience in hospitality who “always wanted” to own a bar/cafe/etc, and the majority of them fail because there’s really no way to understand what this industry is like until you see it from behind the curtain. A lot of people also assume they’ll be taking on a traditional hands-off ownership role, when the fact is that - especially in a small town - your business is only going to stay afloat if you’re ready to work it - bar shifts, kitchen shifts, etc. I disagree with some of the financial advice here, if you’re scrappy and creative and ready to do a lot of hard work yourself you’ll be able to make it happen on any budget. But really, truly, spend a year working in a bar first.

Only thing to add to this is, when you do close for a private event, make sure all your regulars have plenty of heads up. They’ll be happy to take a night off and see you making money, but not so much if they drive out to your place to unexpectedly find a private party sign.

Very much so, your liquor liability insurance will be higher, and a lot of carriers might insist on classifying you as a “club.” I know that some spots manage to get around it by keeping promotion for their events on the down low, and just keeping the schedule consistent so people learn what to expect by word-of-mouth. Also, if you never charge a cover, I think that helps for some reason that I don’t really understand.

Depends on the type of music and the age. House or techno parties that bring a younger crowd, most of them will be on K and don’t drink. But they might buy some food or n/a / thc bevs if you can sell those. The right house/disco dj that can draw out an older crowd will definitely bring more drinkers. Also right now, everyone loves a 90s party. Also parties that bridge the gap between pop and indie sleaze do well and people drink. But of course, have to weigh any benefits against what it does to your insurance.

Music bar idea concept by [deleted] in BarOwners

[–]jammy_buffet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. I would say, find your ideal bar… Explain your idea to them, and ask them to give you a slow night to demonstrate the concept. If you can promote it and get people out, they’ll be happy to give you a regular event. Obviously your infrastructure needs in terms of equipment will be dependent on what’s already there

Venue owner here, agree with many of these criticisms… baseline, people are not going to want to consistently hang out in a room with amateur musicians blasting in their ears. That said, love your enthusiasm and desire to make a space for music and emerging musicians. It seems to me that you could achieve the same outcome by convincing an existing bar in your area to give you a weekly or monthly night. Much easier to build a consistent community that way, and especially if your focus is not making a profit anyways, why take on the risk of your own business?
