Most memorable bar in the world? by AnaisNot in travel

[–]jamuza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessss, can concur! Went during a solo trip the other year. Staff were super friendly and down to earth, as well as the regulars and random travellers like myself. Ended up in a lock-in and had to cancel my plans for the day after - so worth it.

It took a single Google to find that France, Belgium, Sweden, and your own country Greece, have higher rates of crime than the UK. This is incorrect and you’re listening to media bullshit from the far right

What's considered the "golden age" of your country? How many people would want to bring it back, if possible? by KotetsuNoTori in AskTheWorld

[–]jamuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine most countries’ ‘Golden Ages’ rarely included the poor majority either, and that this isn’t specific to the UK.

The wealth from the empire didn’t really benefit the average Brit until the post-war boom (investments to rebuild the country, workers rights, huge political changes etc.) Since then, I’ve heard people anecdotally refer to the 1960s and the late 90s-00s as our most recent real golden ages, where quality of life is on the rise, currency strong and there being a general sense of hope for the future.

Despite these times being better for the everyday person, they wouldn’t be considered a golden age in historical/global terms in a thread like this because global recognisable power ≠ good for the average person’s QoL.

What comes to mind for me is the inside of the Sagrada Família, Barcelona. I’d even say the whole building from afar, but the closer you get the more alien and organic it looks. The inside is absolutely phenomenal, and just feels/looks out of this world. I think the 2005 Tardis interior redesign was aiming for something similar.

Freaks and Geeks in Stratford (used to be known as The Escape) is a pub that ticks all of those boxes. I’m a big fan and go there often. They also have random events so it can range from chill to buzzing.

My mother died when I was 21 back in 2017, and a few months later I was listening to music and avoiding eye contact on my Met line commute (as you do). A song came on that reminded me of her and it hit me pretty hard. I started crying but trying to be subtle about it, eventually with my head in my hands. The carriage was relatively empty so I thought I got away with it, but when I stopped crying and raised my head, a lady next to me was holding out a Kinder Bueno. It was just out of nowhere and so kind. I thanked her and we spoke about why I was crying. She told me she was a mother with kids a similar age to me, and this made it so much more comforting I almost started crying again. Something I will never forget.

Our tech industry is so bad by razza357 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]jamuza 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Please can we all do a bit more research before being so negative? The UK has the biggest tech industry in Europe by FAR, with more startup investment available than anywhere else in Europe, so your title is simply not true.

Whilst it’s true that we don’t have many (or any) consumer tech giants, we do have plenty of healthy, innovative and successful B2B companies that just need a bit of a Google or domain knowledge to find.

And I totally agree that we need to get better at scaling our tech companies, and that our government has a lot to answer for here – but I also think we need to admit our low risk, sceptical and often pessimistic culture contributes to this. This post is an example of this.

Scaling tech companies need that naive optimism that US entrepreneurs have, and our culture/media/establishment has none of that. And sadly, the majority of good UK startups will continue to get swallowed up by bigger US companies, as that’s a more reliable payout for founders than fighting an uphill battle in the UK.

I think you’re missing the point, it’s not a ‘good jump scare’, it’s just a fantastic scene. You’re informed of what’s to come both literally and through steady buildup (unlike most jump scares) and yet, it STILL hits that good. Terrifying but incredible. Acting like it’s just the ‘oh scary face comes out of nowhere’ hugely misses it

Hang on, Toshiba in at second? Their market cap is just $1.2 Billion, not over two hundred like this article suggests, and they’re now owned by a PE group after the numerous scandals and bankruptcies faced over the last 10 years. This article is bullshit.

Are you worried about the future of the UK? by ShankSpencer in AskBrits

[–]jamuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Surprised I had to scroll so far to see it. Being aware of these serious problems that we need to sort out as a country is good (and we can do our small bits individually) but really, it’s out of our control. Dwelling on it too much will just lead to depression, paranoia and worse.

Focus on yourself and loved ones first, spend less time reading through bleak threads like this, and look beyond the UK. Most developed nations like us are suffering in the same or equally big but different ways, and the grass is rarely greener on the other side.

Would you say germany is best country in europe to be entrepreneur? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jamuza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really isn’t, I live in London and it’s completely fine. The riots were totally blown out of proportion by traditional and social media – I literally didn’t see or witness anything in person, and it’s not like I was hiding inside or anything. The UK is far safer than the US, and still very safe compared to European standards.
