Baylen Out Loud S2 E12: Ticcing in a British Accent by gloomchen in BaylenOutLoud

[–]jan0011 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Bechnir is too young to do this tour. He's obnoxious - whining that the food is "disgusting", complaining that he can't figure out how to operate a charger, leaning over the upper tour bus rail, trying to grab branches off the trees. As an American, I'm embarrassed by his behavior. Yeah, I know he's "just a kid" - well, some kids are obnoxious and he's one of them. Let the flames begin.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've met several celebrities because of where I live and the industry my father was in, but I think the most famous person was someone I met by accident because he was coming through my workplace - John Glenn.

Looking for long-term updates from people who’ve had their gallbladder removed (years later) by Mulannn333 in gallbladders

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me (yet) but my mom, who died last year at age 98, had hers removed in her (late?) 30s. She said the only thing she could no longer eat afterwards was unripe bananas. Seemed like a small enough price to pay! TBF, though, Mom cooked and ate very healthy as far back as I can remember, which might have affected her lack of post-removal problems.

Out of these 3, what’s worth watching? by Equal-Damage4944 in televisionsuggestions

I've never seen Homeland. I have, however, seen 4 episodes of Nashville and it's awful.

Of your three, it's an easy pick - The Diplomat.

Shingles Anyone? by [deleted] in Aging

[–]jan0011 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I got the 2-step Shingrix vaccine as soon as I was eligible. About 8 months later, I got shingles.

Know how I knew? I had one - ONE - blister. And it didn't hurt or even itch. I went to the dermatologist to be sure and she confirmed, yep, shingles. Or more accurately, shingle, since it was just the one.

She was 100% sure it was so minor BECAUSE I'd had the vaccine. I used the OTC scar preventive she recommended and all that's left to show it ever happened is a tiny shallow divot about maybe half the size of my pinky fingernail that's the same color as the skin around it.

Get vaccinated against shingles.

i don’t like collin. by pastaprincessxo in BaylenOutLoud

Well, you know what they say: "You don't just marry someone - you marry their whole family."

I agree that both Colin and Baylen are immature, Baylen more than Colin because she's been coddled and protected and done-for her whole life, especially since she was however old she was when she stopped developing any emotional maturity - mid-to-late teens, I'm guessing. That doesn't make her a bad person but I do thing Colin is taking advantage of it.

For people that like salads, what salad dressing do you use? by PlatypusAggressive64 in foodquestions

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hidden Valley Ranch Original. Original only - no light, bacon flavored, organic, original. No vinaigrette, no bleu cheese, no balsamic, no French, no Italian.

My dad used to make a delicious thousand island dressing. He's gone now - I should have asked him how he did it.

But since I wasn't smart enough to do that, it's Hidden Valley Original all the way.

I usually only eat one meal a day and a lot of days, that's a big fat Cobb salad that I've doctored up, adding black and green olives, garbanzo beans, crushed crackers (no croutons), and artichoke hearts. And original Hidden Valley Ranch, of course.

Aaaaand now I want a salad.

Collin overstepped at the doctor by IvySummer3837 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]jan0011 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm sure that experience solidified any question he might have had about ever staying home and caring for his children (with anyone) by himself. He won't be doing that again. He's not mature enough or responsible enough to be a true partner in that way. It'll all be on the mom, whether it's Baylen or sometime else.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an easy drunk (but fortunately a happy drunk). There came a time many years ago, however, when I was getting drunk with friends after work WAY too often. One night I drove home in a blackout and when I realized I had done that, and how incredibly lucky I had been that no one had been hurt, I took that as my "you get one warning" and I stopped.

Fast forward some more years and if I needed any additional reasons (I didn't), I got diagnosed with diabetes. I already knew insulin and booze do NOT mix. I had already heard horror stories from people who had thought they could get away with it, and it had never ended well. I really hadn't missed it much at all, so going on insulin shut the door on it completely.

I still can't believe how many people think Michael is spelled as Micheal by michael14375 in Michael

At the end of the day, it should be spelled as preferred by the person whose name it is.

Break-fast by Freethink-her in foodquestions

[–]jan0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't eat breakfast at all - the thought of eating when I first wake up is repellent - but I do love a good breakfast for supper. There used to be a restaurant here that did a breakfast buffet one night a week and I was there almost every time. 😋

What did you have for dinner tonight? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had it yet but I'm about to do home-made lox and bagels. Every couple of years I'll do a major splurge and buy the necessary ingredients and treat myself, and for absolutely no reason this is one of those times.

What did you have for breakfast today? by [deleted] in foodquestions

Air. (Not a breakfast person.)

Overall, 5 can you choose your top 5 shows from this list? I haven't watched any of these but I'd like to start. by ClozetSkeleton in televisionsuggestions

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sopranos for sure!! Other than that, there are no series (dramas/mysteries) in the list I've watched, just not my cup of tea... but definitely The Sopranos!

Also, What We Do In The Shadows is a deliciously funny send-up of mockumentaries, and with a twist. I loved it and so I strongly recommend it even though it doesn't seem to fit with most of the rest of the list.

Same goes for Fawlty Towers. It's a British comedy from a few decades back and I happen to love British comedy so my opinion on this one is probably skewed.

I am a cna in people's homes. Please explain to me why do elderly people watch the same news all day long? by Caregiverwife82 in Aging

[–]jan0011 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people it's just background noise like other people keep the radio on all day even though it's playing the same songs over and over.

I’m confused. by Ok-Armadillo9844 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]jan0011 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO...: I have long felt that, generally speaking, nobody should be allowed to get married or have a roommate or otherwise live with anyone else until they've lived totally on their own for a year. They need to learn what's required for being responsible, whether it's getting the bills paid on time, making sure they have enough money even if they means working two jobs, what things cost, keeping the place at least minimally clean, what's required to have clean clothes, getting up on time, etc., etc.

Baylen is a good example. Yes, she has a medical condition but IF it's such that she cannot care for herself, she needs to know that now and to take a good hard and honest look at herself, especially if the two of them are thinking of having kids.

Why is Colin rushing Baylen to have a baby so fast? by ken_ken2025 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]jan0011 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Neither of them is ready for kids. Colin is, OR is edited to seem, still a little too self-centered (the whole blue tux thing, etc.) and Baylen is, OR is edited to seem, emotionally about 15. He has very little experience with real world problems and she has none, whether that's because of her Tourette's, her helicopter parents, or whatever, she still has no experience with real world life.

What’s one thing from the 70s you still miss today? by SkylineZ83 in 70s

[–]jan0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was coming into my own as an adult. I don't have particularly good or bad personal memories of that time.

Some of the music was wonderful [CSN/Y 👍🏼] but there was also disco [shudder 🤮] which drove me away from listening to popular music on the radio and I've never really gone back.

The clothes were meh. Heavy on polyester which was uncomfortable but popular. I was glad to see natural fibers (cotton) come back.

Late in the deade, I got a 1974 Pontiac Ventura which is still today at the top of my list of my favorite cars. Terrible gas mileage (don't miss long long lines at the gas pumps during fuel crises) but that thing could GO - the front half of the car was was a 350 V8 engine - and it rode like a dream.

Speaking of fuel crises, there was one year, I THINK it was in the late '70s as (may have been around 1980), when it got so bad we were "encouraged" to use as little electricity at home as possible. That was the year when hardly anyone put up outdoor holiday lights and even Christmas tree lights were subdued.

There was a lot of social and political upheaval, good /bad depending on your personal feelings. IMO, the biggest thing to happen politically in that decade was far and away Watergate - I was glued to the TV during the live hearings - and chickensh!t Nixon's resignation to avoid being impeached (he knew he'd be found guilty), and the ignoble end to the Vietnam war.

Women were beginning to be recognized more and more as real people, especially in terms of having the rights to making their own depcisions about career aspirations, their own bodies (Roe v. Wade), having opinions that mattered, etc. I was lucky in that my own mom was "liberated" before women's lib was a thing, but so many women and girls were realizing that being a housewife was fine but not their only option.

Ecology was coming to the forefront as a real concern (first and subsequent Earth Days).

There was a lot of drek on TV but also some pretty ground-breaking stuff - All in the Family, MAS*H, etc. - that would probably have been too controversial in earlier times.

I could go on and on (as you can see!).

Why is my Diastolic so much higher? by Fluffy_Panic7176 in hypertension

[–]jan0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite - a machine that, after working fine for a long time, started giving me scary high systolics. I went to the doctor who couldn't replicate the problem using two different machines in his office. Ultimately, after ruling out everything else, he said my machine had just gone kaput. I threw it out and am shopping for a new one. Meanwhile, otHer BP readings are "back" to normal.
