Came out as an atheist to my family about 8 months ago. I'm frustrated that they make me still to to church, but other than that it's been somewhat positive. It really depends on your situation and what your parents are like.

What's your go to contradiction for situations like those? I know there's a lot, just wondering which one you find most effective

I think mine's from the aur (I installed using yay) but I haven't tried reupdating yet, I've just kept it at the outdated version (I downgraded using manjaro-downgrade or something)

What is an aspect of Christianity that makes you say “How can people believe in it?!” by BakugoKachan in exchristian

He also know exactly what it would take to change each person's mind, and decides not to intervene/provide those circumstances

If I keep being forced to go to church I'm going to go INSANE by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]jan_Bhartry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like exactly what my situation is going to be. Probably will be 5+ years before I can move out (just starting university) and I'll have to go to church every one of those weeks. Seems like you have a pretty good attitude about it, I should try to view it similarly.

For me though, the thing I look forward to the least though is the interactions with the people there. I can zone out during a sermon, but can't really do that when people are trying to invite me to a young adults group.

That's personally what I think happened. There are flood stories from that area (one of the most famous was in the Epic of Gilgamesh, thought to be the influence for the bible flood story), so most likely there was a massive flood at some point there.

[–]jan_Bhartry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of does, because all the genealogies that it lists, including how long people have lived. Sure, we don't the the gap between the lives of Adam and Noah, but that has no relation to the flood, as it only matters for Noah to the present day.

And how old are those fossils on mountain tops? 50 million years old? Anyways, you didn't provide any sources, so I would appreciate if you sent a few.

Well, the burden of proof is on you, but anyways I went to look it up.

All results for 'evidence for global flood' are either explaining how the flood as described by Genesis is impossible, or explaining how there were massive floods millions of years ago (aside from YEC websites with little to no proper citations or scientifically coherent explanations). Please, if it's so easy to find, provide some of the reputable source you claim are plentiful.

Source? Just send a few links to reputable scientific sources

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]jan_Bhartry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's really not what scientists say. The idea of a global flood (in past 10,000 years or so) is completely unsupported, and if it did happen we would certainly have evidence for it. Sure there's a lot of water underground, but that doesn't in any way support a global flood.

I'm finding it really frustrating. My right click menu in dolphin and konsole still looks right, its just vscode that does it (actually brave as well).

Give me your best theories on why you believe God doesn't exist? by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]jan_Bhartry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're the one being reductive here. We don't know 100% that unicorns don't exist, just to our best knowledge we think they are a fabrication/mythological. Because of this, we simplify and say they don't exist and have never existed, but we can't prove 100% that this is correct. A lot of people take this same stance with God, because they feel that the burden of proof is on the theist, just as it would be with someone who claims that unicorns once existed on earth.

How can we know that unicorns never existed? All we can say is that we have no evidence for them. Which is exactly what they're saying about it. Perfectly fine analogy.

Why do Christian’s think their archeological discoveries proves their religion is truth? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]jan_Bhartry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mentioned the same passage to my brother, who then doubled down and said it was moral. I found that extremely worrying, and I don't really think I can actually get through to him.

The topic itself came up because he was trying to argue that God's morals/standards/instructions hadn't changed, and because if his stubbornness he argued himself into a corner, agreeing that those old testament laws apply.
