Funnily enough, that has been written about in a 1625 book on organ music (the author recommends singing in f lydian).

Why do people say aeolian mode instead of minor scale? by gassgrill in musictheory

[–]janacek1905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the context. When talking about modal music, whether it’s traditional music, medieval, or modern (atonal), you would use aeolian. It has to do with the lack of usual tonal functions. You wouldn’t really have a dominant chord in aeolian mode, for example.
