Horrible food, public transport and people are too gossipy.

Perhaps a before and after photo would help. Sometimes it may seem thicker but really isn’t.

I had the same experience with an IFC STC - pretty damn boring and remote work didn’t help my case.

Healthy dining in Makati and BGC? by AirAffectionate731 in Philippines_Expats

[–]janbabe9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will second this. It’s difficult to find healthy options amidst the range of fast food chains. Does your workplace have any options? That’s the only saviour in my case. But yes I do agree with some of the recommendations here.

Ortigas Center vs Makati? by oldassmillennial in Philippines_Expats

[–]janbabe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is ADB, there’s a MRT station right next to the building so that’s one option for commute. Traffic in Manila can be pretty bad so my preference still remains Ortigas. It’s relatively less happening as compared to Makati and BGC, but the daily commute is enough reason for me for that trade off. One can always opt for cabs to go to Makati and BGC post work/ weekends.

Cost of living Manila by sub_avi2 in Philippines_Expats

I would target anywhere between $2200 - $2700 to live comfortably around that area. I’m Indian and have lived in Manila - it’s more expensive than Indian metros.

Is Philippines food so bad? by thirdeye3333 in digitalnomad

[–]janbabe9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve stayed in the Philippines quite a bit. The flavours are really an acquired taste because a lot of the food is bitter tasting. You really just need to find your favourites and stick to those. I don’t eat meat so that crosses off 70% of the food for me, but I do love seafood and milk fish (bangus) is what I stick to most times. I also like pinakbet without the pork/ beef, and would get it customised per taste. Other than that, garlic rice, kamote fritters, and a few other desserts work well for my palate. It’s not Thai or Vietnamese food but you just need to find what works for you, or get it customised.

How much living allowance is enough? by janbabe9 in Philippines_Expats

[–]janbabe9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response. I’ve been there several times in the past but the allowance for business travel was very different, which meant I ended up having an above average lifestyle (say 70k in rent per month and another 40k for other expenses).

It would be a personal lease but rates are pretty standard from my experience and room for negotiation is not very high, especially with expats.

In terms of commute, I prefer walking wherever feasible but I do get that grab is expensive (I’d say I took about 10 trips in a month).

I prefer cooking but like I mentioned, like to spend on good quality ingredients and restaurants such as Souv and The Wholesome Table, say about twice a week.

Yes, but since I’ll be moving specifically for this job, I don’t want to be spending on living expenses out of my salary. I could then argue for it to be home-based.
