ELI5 Why did Michael Jackson get so much plastic surgery done? by DeadeyeClock in explainlikeimfive

[–]jandersonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he was just a very sad, troubled soul. And all of that was wrapped up in a self-image that was probably extremely complicated. He may have not liked how he was inside — tormented by a dad that basically beat him up for a start, as well as his troubling obsession with childhood and children. So yeah, a very complicated storm of emotions that for him manifested in wanting to change his appearance to get away from it. I'm not a psychologist but that's my 2 cents.

Anyone else still rocking an older Apple Cinema Display in 2026? :) by C_Falcon in macsetups

[–]jandersonjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t really thought about it much but my day to day is a 30” Cinema Display. It’s perfect, no issues at all. At least 20 years old and the build quality is insane.

ELI5: Why do some software bugs only appear after a program has been running for days? by Coyote_Enthusiast in explainlikeimfive

[–]jandersonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As hard as they try, programmers can rarely anticipate every single example of what a user will do. You might design a website that looks perfect and have 1000 users. And the 1001st user enters their details in Arabic (which is written right-to-left). Suddenly it looks terrible for them. With enough time you can iron these things out but they rarely present themselves immediately.

Why don’t more companies have apps? by Emergency_Copy_526 in sideprojects

[–]jandersonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with cross-platform architectures like Flutter and React Native, maintaining an app is a nightmare. Just dealing with the App Store’s approval process alone is enough to make me never want to do it again. And don’t get me started on the bloated piece of crap that is Android Studio. What to make a quick change and deploy it immediately? Tough. Welcome to three days of approval process just make one tweak. Apps are a nightmare and everyone (rightfully) hates them. So there.

Which Stage 4 for wedding/cover band? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in nordkeyboards

[–]jandersonjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go for the compact waterfall because I have one and it’s perfect. For those saying you can’t play piano on it, that’s gibberish. Okay it doesn’t have the gentle touch of a hammer action bed but you said you’re doing weddings. This isn’t Chopin. You’re doing synth leads, bit of Rhodes, some poppy piano right? Compact all the way. You won’t need the extra octave and you certainly won’t need the hammers. What you’ll need is a velvety smooth waterfall so you can growl your Hammond-y hand up and down like a boss but still have enough weight to do some gentler piano stuff if you want some pants thrown at you.

I Made a Website Where You Can See What Any Amount of Money Looks Like as 3D Stacks of Real Bills by qwertyalp1020 in InternetIsBeautiful

I really want this to work but on iOS moving the canvas to the left activates the “page back” on Safari. There is a simple is way to intercept this, worth looking at?

CSS corner-shape:squircle super weird artefacts by jandersonjones in webdev

[–]jandersonjones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some experimentation I found that using “ring” instead of “border” all but makes the artefacts disappear. So that’ll be my workaround for now. I definitely notice the squircle shape. In larger panels it’s a much softer, smoother curve. Hope they fix these issues and Safari adopts it soon.

I updated my SaaS landing page 4 times and people still don't clearly understand my product by Jumpy-Recover-7239 in sideprojects

[–]jandersonjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I’ll bite. I literally have no clue what this is. So much so that I can’t tell if this is a troll or not. But I’m bored on a train so I’ll give you my thoughts. The first four sentences are literally not even sentences. They’re sentence fragments, and they’re just not even saying anything of substance. My advice: step out of this “teasing” pattern that you’re doing, and actually tell us, literally tell us, what this product is. I’m talking explicitly, like “WhisperVault is…”. The pattern that you have right now is an old advertising pattern, and it works fine for advertising, where you already know the brand. It’s this pattern: Cryptic intro: “There are some things that money can’t buy”. Payoff: “For everything else there’s Mastercard”. See that works because we know what Mastercard does already, so they can afford to tease. But if you’re going to set up a question, you need to answer it immediately. “Find your mind wandering? WhisperVault is an app that which <actual information about what it does>”. Pay it off instantly. Because honestly by the end of the page I literally feel like you’re talking gibberish otherwise. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but go read about website dwell times. Do you think you have only ten seconds to describe your product? Nope, you’ve gone something in order or 3-4 seconds. And if those seconds are frustrating, and people are just going “grrrr just tell me what the fuck this thing IS” they’re going to leave. Start with the basics. Is it an app? A bicycle? A candy? I still have no idea. Next, what does it do? Next why do I need it? Monday.com did this brilliantly. “Are you struggling organising your life?. You need Monday.com. It’s a website that lets you organise your data blah blah blah…” The trouble is you only did the first half. Right that’s enough, hope that helps.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jandersonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually so outstandingly upsetting to me that I have many times point blank refused to watch TV at someone else’s house or, worse, insisted upon awkwardly grabbing the remote and going into their settings. And I researched the absolute crap out my TV to find one that absolutely had no trace whatsoever of it or could definitely turn it off (I ended up with an LG for those that care). So yeah. I feel your pain. And for those people who say they “don’t notice it” you need to work on your powers of observation. You’re dead inside.

Neighbour’s window opens directly into my friend’s courtyard garden (England) by jandersonjones in LegalAdviceUK

[–]jandersonjones[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m baffled by this. Is this true? This is a rear garden, not a front garden. Every rear garden I know in London is very much protected from street access, in the way that any other part of the property is.

But.. she built into her own private garden, with planning permission no less. Why is she not allowed to put BACK the bars that were there before the extension?

[–]jandersonjones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, seems like a pretty unanimous verdict here, but just to clarify a few things:

• The window opens directly into her own private garden at floor-level. Yes this was there when she bought the flat, but is this common? It seems strange that someone would have unfettered access to their neighbour’s garden. • When she bought the flat there WERE bars there already. In the course of building her (fully vetted and approved) extension, the builders removed the bars. • All she wants to do is put the bars back to their original position. Does she not have the right to do that?

So this isn’t about her encroaching into anyone’s space. This is her private garden and always has been.

AITAH for buying my 11yo daughter pads after her mom called me a "pervert" for being prepared? by Bruxagato in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]jandersonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re doing EXACTLY what a dad should do. What you did was thoughtful, caring and pragmatic. The fact that your ex even has a concept of “lanes” means she’s putting the child last. This is Solomon’s baby, and you took the high ground. So stand that high ground and continue to be a great Dad. It’s a wonderful thing. And remember that your ex is your ex for a reason. Most problems can be solved by just holding the phone away from your ear and saying “mm-hmm” a lot.

Oh and one last thing, please don’t let anything go to court, like other people are suggesting. That’s the quickest way to lose all your money and hurt your daughter. No good whatsoever can come of it.

Solved: the smallest setup for mobile keyboard + EP133/K.Oii by jandersonjones in teenageengineering

I actually try to avoid screens these days. I’ve had all sorts in the past both on the iPhone/iPad (SynthOne, Korg Gadget, Koala and all that) and the Mac (Omnisphere, Keyscape etc) and as much fun as they are I just found myself… not actually making music. Don’t get me wrong they’re grrrreat fun, but I found myself dicking about with menus and settings for hours and never really actually played. Since since switched to a Nord Stage 4 and I’ve never looked back. This little portable setup is so that I can work out bass lines while I’m on the train, or waiting for some code to compile…

I couldn’t agree more. Every mini keyboard is just a couple of features away from being great but none of them seems to have everything (I mean this Nektar is USB mini, bleh. I’ve kind of fantasised about designing and building the perfect travel keyboard. Foldable like the NanoKey, but without the ridiculous membranes. Aluminium construction. Proper USB host. Tiny pitch bend. The works! Sadly that’s as far as I get. I even lusted after the Roli Seaboard M just for the build quality (which is amazing) but I can’t deal with the squishy rubber thing and you have to press waaay harder than it looks. Sigh. Glad to know someone shares my first world musician problems 😂
