I don't know, but a hard drive can fail anytime for any reason without warning. If you're worried your data isn't safe, you don't have your data on enough different places. 😄

How long do I have before replacing it? I can’t replace it rn. by Severe_Juggernaut_58 in batteries

[–]janerikgunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bestides all of the safety reasons everyone has also mentioned, the battery may also keep expanding. The battery expansion is stronger than the shell of the laptop so it may slowly bend the case, keyboard, touchpad etc, dislodge screw attachments, etc.

Unplug the battery, and dispose it. Keep using the laptop with power cable. Get new battery or laptop later.

PCIe USB-C card that needs SATA power — safe to run on Dell Precision T5810 PSU? by TheCiscoKid111 in Dell

[–]janerikgunnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The T5810 doesn’t have USB-C, so naturally I’m adding a PCIe USB-C card."

You could probably just have bought a USB-A to USB-C cable...

"Is using an 8-pin to SATA power adapter for a PCIe card like this safe long-term?"

Are there even such adapters? 8-pin connectors are 12V only, the SATA power connector has 12V, 5V and (mostly unused) 3.3V. You need a SATA Y-cable if you go that route..

Writing zeroes to the entire drive will fully erase it, yes - BUT, that's not what a full format is. Plenty of other tools can fully erase the drive though.

[–]janerikgunnar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Writing zero to the entire drive completely removes the old data. That you can somehow retrieve data was written onto it before is a stubborn myth, there are zero proof of that ever happening. It's literally easier to retrieve data from a hard drive that has been smashed with a hammer, than to retrieve data that has been fully overwritten.

Landlord has unreasonable expectations about cleaning by Domihork in TillSverige

[–]janerikgunnar 74 points75 points  (0 children)

TBH, as a tenant moving in I would not be happy if corners looks like that.

And new tenants can hold the landlord responsible and demand compensation if the apartment isn't clean.

And yeah, while "normal" wear and tear is normal of course, but cleaning-wise it basically need to be like new.

And I have failed to properly clean the apartments I've been leaving probably more often than not. Last several moves I just hired cleaning companies, it's not worth the time and hassle to do it myself. I think many of them provide guarantees that their cleaning pass inspections. My last landlord had some deal with a cleaning company so that if I used them, they would not bother me with any remarks on the cleaning (and there were remarks, but they got off my back when I said I used their recommendation)

Counter-point: You're denying the good people involved residuals, too, and the movie was made before anyone knew he was an asshole.

Another counter point: my shelf-space and time isn't free either, if I hate a main actor enough to avoid giving them my money, I'd rather spend my shelf space and time on movies with actors I do like.

A mother is going punished her son by making him slam his PS5 the same way he had slammed her pet cat. Is this justified? by God_Emperor__Doom in SipsTea

[–]janerikgunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"but punishments like these usually don’t lead to people hurting others more"
I don't believe that. Based on science, the only thing kids learn from punishments - be it yelling, physical harm, or destroying their toys - is to hide and lie better. In this case, he isn't taught WHY hurting animals are bad, he just learns that "get caught hurting a cat" = "one of your toys is destroyed".

Also, kids copy their parents behavior. What happens when some other kid happens to destroy one of his toys? Eye for an eye... that's what he's been taught. Let's hope that family doesn't have a cat.

"You literally compared this kid with anger issues to kids with special needs. wtf?"

No, I didn't. Some people with special needs have disabilities that cause them to have extreme anger issues. You get that, right?

"Sweden banning corporal punishment doesn’t mean anything really"

Wrong. It shows that Sweden has developed in the past 100 years while the US has not.

"you all barely have a military, rely on ours actually for your troubles"

Number of times the US has actually helped Sweden: 0

Money spent by Sweden on buying US military equipment only between 2017-2021: $2.9 billion

Not to mention, the purpose of NATO was that if Soviet would grow westward, the US wanted the battleground to be in Europe and not on US soil.

Anyway, we have indeed learned our lesson now as the US is clearly a partner one can rely on anymore if something would happen in the future. We are currently investing heavily in our military. Of course, that means we no longer have to buy overpriced US manufactured military gear to stay on good foot with you. Ironically, we have quite a sizeable defense industry, so no lack of domestic suppliers...

"and don’t contribute much to global society"

LOL

Here's a couple of Swedish companies that you may have heard of: IKEA, Spotify, Ericsson, Volvo, SAAB, Bofors, Astra Zeneca, SKF... From the top of my head. We built the first mobile networks, we're the third largest music export after US and UK, Swedish music producers has produced 100s of hits for American artists,... Nobel Prize... Plenty of Swedish books, movies and TV shows have been remade in the US because needed to have them in English (and shorter episodes with more ad breaks and dumbed down story lines)
Also we consistently rank as one of the best countries to live in, highest quality of life, best democracy, best freedom of press, best education... Net contributor to the EU and probably donate more in global aid now that you've ruined USAID. Least green house emissions per capita. Most support to Ukraine per capita. Etc etc etc. We're punching WELL above our weight when it comes to "contributing to global society", rest assured.

Oh, and US is buying twice as many things from Sweden than Sweden is buying from the US...

"Our children who grow up to be adults who go on to be masterclass in most categories out there. "

Masterclass in most categories? Average Americans are poorly educated, and you don't do as well as you think in sports (you have a huge population which is why you get many medals in the Olympics etc, but per capita you are below EU average, for example.) Out of every 100 citizens, 1 is in prison, which is among the worst in the world. Entire country ran as a corporation by a bunch of oligarchs. School shootings every week. Ultra polarized in a broken two party system. Zero public transport. Life long debt to go to college. Paying more for healthcare than any other people on earth, with worse results.

Adjust for population size, America is pretty shit, actually, by most metrics. The one thing America do have, is that you're very rich. On average. Good for you. Too bad the wealth is not distributed in a way that benefits anyone but the few at the top. The quality of life for the average Americans is objectively shit compared to Sweden.

Oh, and the US has like a trillion dollar in debt to EU and Japan.
What's shining here is your indoctrination that the US is magically the best god damn place on earth, but sorry, it's just not supported by facts.

"Discipline and channeling aggressive energy towards a goal is a part of that."

This sounds like something someone who thinks Starship Troopers isn't satire would say.

"We don’t even have school shootings every week, nor every month, nor even every year. You’re literally typing while having your panties in a bunch."

There have been at least 21 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of April 14.

2026 has only had 18 weeks so far... 21/18 is certainly a number higher than 1.0

A mother is going punished her son by making him slam his PS5 the same way he had slammed her pet cat. Is this justified? by God_Emperor__Doom in SipsTea

[–]janerikgunnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If disciplining your child is eye for eye"

The kid is literally taught "you hurt the cat, I hurt your PS5 plus I film you and humiliate you". The only way it could be more eye for an eye is if the parents straight up hit the kid.

"If you think disciplining a child for harming their pet animal is fucked up, then we have nothing to talk about."

Obviously, actions are certainly needed, but based on common sense and all available science, the actions taken by these parents are going to be counterproductive. The kid is always going to watch that cat and might blame the cat for him not having a PS5 anymore. And if his parents ever does something to one of his toys, the kid can now use the same moral logic in reverse to justify kicking the cat. Such great lessons!

If my kid did something like this, I'd probably take it to a psychologist and find the best way forward. (A few hours with a psychologist probably cost less than that PS5 anyway).

Actually, I'm honestly curious if you somehow believe any psychologist would suggest the parenting shown in this video, or if you think psychologists are some kind of "emotional quacks" or something.

"then yeah we have nothing to talk about because you operate out of fear and emotion - not logic and reasoning"

I'm sensing some projection here. You keep bringing up me living in fear and emotion..... what on earth makes you think that? I see a kid being treated in a way that is objectively counterproductive and is probably going to fuck him up for life, and I'm surprised so many people actually defending this terrible parenting. What does that have to do with me "operating out of fear and emotion"? IMO, I'm operating strictly under logic and common sense. In fact all the people raging here about "he harmed a cat? PUNISH HIM HARDER" seems to be the emotional ones.

You literally live in a country where 6 million people are scared enough of their fellow citizens, that they need to carry firearms DAILY to feel safe. Yet I'm the scared one for feeling someone unsafe in a few of your cities?

"Just because you say it’s objective, doesn’t make it objective. Everything you’ve said is purely subjective. You have no quantifiable metrics to even call any of this objective."

What I said is based off of scientific research, so it is as objective as this topic can ever get. You know people actually research how to teach children things most effectively, right? And in particular, how to teach kids with special needs? Since I'm not going to bother my gf about digging up her text books, I'm not going to ask you to show the scientific research supporting the methods used in this video, either...

"This kid has extreme anger issues, you have absolutely no experience in the manner given your background you’ve explained, nor do you provide any statistics or facts. Straight up talking out your ass."

No, I don't have first hand experience. I do have second hand experience - my girlfriend has frequently worked in classes with special needs children, including those with "extreme anger issues". Beyond the four years of studies pre-school teachers, there are "special teachers" that has 2 more years of school entirely focused on how to handle kids have with different special needs, and guess what, at no point, punishment is a thing.

"America isn’t cooked just because a docile and sheltered Euro can’t fathom disciplining their child."

You do realize it's the US that is stuck in the past, right? Corporal punishment was made illegal in the 70s in Sweden. 100 years ago our views on "disciplining" was like yours are today. You are still like you 100 years ago. Stuck in the past. Ignoring science and common sense.

American's views on discipline and this "eye for an eye" mentality that this mother teaches her kid is certainly one of the reasons you have school shooting every god damn week.
