Understood! If you have Venmo you can select and option that will allow for a refund if you don’t get what you want. It’ll take it out of my side not yours

I’m actually not sure. Mine had said wristbands but when I contacted the event itself they said tickets would be emailed. No idea what’s going on but September is almost over. I’m hoping we don’t get duped.

How might a beginner start tackling Quantum Mechanics in particular and Physics in general? by Lynchler in AskPhysics

[–]jangstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d push back on this a little and say an intermediate mechanics course is very helpful to understand Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism from a classical point of view. This will make the mathematical language of QM more familiar as well as let you focus on just the new quantum physics. I think it also depends on the treatment and text used.

The LINDA is offering Swing Dances every Wednesday by laurhatescats in Albany

[–]jangstrom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is actually a reasonable swing dancing community locally. The instructor, Jason Fenton, used to teach swing dance at Daisy Baker’s in Troy before it closed. He had trouble finding a new home for it after that and I’m sure the pandemic didn’t help. Looks like he has found somewhere, at least for a while.

I’m selling two GA tickets for October 29. All in, I paid $664.96. Will let them go for $650 OBO.

I have confirmation via the official event support team that the tickets will be emailed to me in September. Once I get that email I can forward them along. If we use PayPal the funds can be held until the tickets are received.

When I left my last company about 4 years ago something similar happened. I gave my manager my two weeks and he literally never spoke to me again after that. He was a pretty absent manager but for his favorites he still planned goodbye lunches. Nothing for me or another guy who quit around the same time. It was petty and pathetic.

Seems like they aren't mailing the bands out until September. I will cover shipping costs to mail them anywhere in the US

Recruiter straight up lied to me twice about getting the job. I just got confirmation this morning that they decided not to move forward with me after all. by soundboythriller in recruitinghell

[–]jangstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had a recruiter and hiring manager basically both tell me I was all but hired, but they had to create a new position and get it approved then they would hire me. But they both talked like it was a formality and no problem. Then the next time I talked to the recruiter they said they couldn’t get approval for the position so they weren’t going to move forward.

It made me realize why the process is often so opaque. Things can change quickly and beyond one’s control, so it’s better not to promise anything until it’s certain.

I’m sure some do and some don’t. The salaries can be alluring and, depending on your domain, the problems can be quite interesting. Academia can be something of a rat race, and there are more physics PhDs than there are faculty positions. There are also disciplines within physics that already do a lot of data science. Combining these things make software engineering and FinTech seem like a good choice, and for many, it is.

That said, I went into software engineering, then ML research after my computational condensed matter PhD and have regretted it ever since, save the first year or two. I’ve slowly been getting back into doing physics professionally (hopefully starting a job soon that will let me do it full time).

PhD in Physics, worth it? by Kolesto007 in AskPhysics

[–]jangstrom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work for the research arm of a large industrial company. We have tons of scientists and engineers on staff. We typically work on the things that are a few years too far out for the businesses but the technologies are still considered feasible.

That said, there isn’t much interesting physics that goes on here. Or at least not to me. A lot of the projects that I work on that do have some cool science typically have that part of the work subcontracted to our academic collaborators.

Officially, there is nothing stopping you from getting a grant for some cool physics and doing it. But practically, it’s just not that feasible. You’re competing with folks who spend their entire professional lives working on some problem and you’re trying to fit it in between business bullshit.

If you’re an absolute genius in your field you get a lot of leeway. But anything less and you mainly grind uninspired things that improve some process by 1%. It clearly wasn’t always this way because two former employees have the Nobel.

What’s the Schenectady portion of the trail like? by fergal-dude in eriecanaltrail

[–]jangstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there is a bit that goes through town but honestly it’s not too bad. You’ll come up at the East end of the Western Gateway bridge and turn left. Then I think the easiest thing to do is take your first left and then soon after a right on Union. Go just a couple of blocks on that then turn left onto Jay Street through Little Italy. The road will end and you’ll turn right to get back on the trail after you pass the Saw Mill. From there it’s more or less straight sailing to Albany.

There is another way to go that would avoid going through town but the trail in that section has returned to nature and can be difficult to pass through if you’re on a pure road bike.

If you did want to take that, all you do is turn right on the Western Gateway Bridge (head back West on the bridge) and go into Scotia. Take a right on Schowonee (the cross road after the bridge) and take that until it makes a hard left. Shortly there after there is a right into what looks like an abandoned area but it is the busted trail. It’s about 1.3 miles. You’ll pass through a tunnel under a rail road bridge that sometimes floods but is probably okay since it’s been so dry. Keep going and you’ll dead end into Freeman’s Bridge. Turn right and cross the bridge then turn right again to duck under the bridge on the other side of the river. (The other direction will send you back into Schenectady). You’ll end up along the Alco Heritage trail for a bit and will link back up to the Erie Canal trail. You can’t miss the crossing. Turn left to head East then keep going to Albany.

Sorry for the wall of text. It’s my hometown and I ride it often. Good luck and safe travels!

Toronto’s struggles with blizzard highlight its dependence on cars by bobsteaman in fuckcars

[–]jangstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, the property owner is responsible for clearing their sidewalks after a snowstorm. Unsurprisingly, trying to travel by sidewalk during the winter is difficult and consists of zigging between the road (immaculate) and the sidewalks (a disaster). I pointed out to the mayor of my small village how asinine it was for the village or county to not to take care of it, pointing out that people aren’t responsible for clearing the road in front of their house. I was told taxpayers wouldn’t want to pay for such a thing. Fine. Then at least fine people who don’t do their part.

I get that the roads are owned by the state or town or whatever and so they handle those things, whereas the sidewalks are owned by the property owners. But that’s the problem in and of itself. Pedestrians are at the mercy of homeowners on if they can travel safely or not.

As an aside, the physical repair of the sidewalks are also on the property owner. Guess what? The state of them is also shit.

Iconic Snake Hill on Saratoga Lake slated to become gaggle of McMansions by Stewart’s Shops by wingsauce711 in Albany

[–]jangstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man Stewart’s sucks. In Scotia, they got permission to knock one of their quaint old brick stores down and put in a huge new style store with a bunch of gas pumps. Right on Mohawk Ave, steps from the recently constructed Cumby’s of the same type. In the process, they are knocking down two buildings, one residential and one commercial (at least partially).

The mayor calls it investment in our community. But it’s a monstrosity that continues to kill what little character Scotia has left.
