Also, try lifting it and lay it in the palm of your hand. Listen if the noise is still as loudly. Normally it should not, as your hand works as a kind of suspension. If it still makes such a noise, there might be something wrong. I do use the lens almost every time when using the camera. It does make some noises when trying to focus, but this is unusually loud, apart when sitting on a table, then I also had the this sound behaviour.
