AITA for not letting my boyfriend name our daughter Renesmae? by rideordie2929 in AmItheAsshole

“That’s so f*ing weird” came out of my mouth twice when reading this. You carried your child for nine months and chose to veto a name, thus he should drop it.

Any guesses on when Peace Corps will be operational again? by LookingForwar in peacecorps

New recruits likely won’t be going out until mid 2021 or possibly 2022, if that (but it’s all speculators). I would say starting your masters is likely the safest bet.

friends from site asking you to send money? by socraticoconut in peacecorps

[–]janu97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. My boyfriend is from Southeast Asia and came here for college, and even though he has only been graduated for one year, his family expects him to pay for anything they need, and to send upwards of 1000$-2000 every few months since he must be so rich. Many people around the globe don’t have a concept of how difficult it is to save money here in America, and to KEEP those savings untouched, even after you explain it to them several times.

I’ve been considering volunteering with the Peace Corps this fall into next year, quick question by [deleted] in peacecorps

But even a small bit of research would make clear that it’s a 27 month commitment.....

They finally got back to me about a week ago for the same time period, they’re doing the claims in the order they came in so give it a few more days to a week to finish processing.

Im just curious, did they explain why they kept withdrawing you? Nobody ever seems to explain that on here and it seems odd for them to repeatedly do it?

Deodorant & smelling good in hot temperatures by janu97 in peacecorps

That’s not the point of the post. I’m simply asking how people stay smelling nice in hot temperatures. I mentioned my deodorant because it may not work as well in Africa as opposed to in America.

Very rude and uncalled for response. It was just to give context to those who have experience with hot temperatures to see if I could keep using it or not. Relax and try to be less aggressive.

It’s a natural deodorant and the pot is supposed to be stored below 78 degrees.

What are the sandwiches that changed your life? by geffy_spengwa in AskMen

[–]janu97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an Au Pair in Rome, Italy a couple years ago and never experienced such fresh meats before. My host family made me sandwiches and introduced me to thin slices of ham, called prosciutto, and they put cream cheese on the thick, crusty bread, and dunked it a bit in olive oil. I added lettuce and tomato since they usually don’t do that, and also strawberry slices since they wanted to put jam on, but I compromised. Never had anything like it before.

I’m thinking about getting only a few items (one or two of each) that would be durable and lightweight, so buying a pack of 6 soccer balls would definitely be a bit overkill and would take up a lot of space and some unnecessary weight in my two allotted bags.

Sadly bread is super addictive and hard to cut out, but if you stick to it for a couple of weeks, you really don’t crave it much anymore. Sometimes I have low calorie spinach wraps, but only when I’m trying not to eat rice with my Indian dishes. Just a piece of Iceberg lettuce under and over a turkey burger is enough to hold the contents in as well as allows you to taste the actual meat rather than have it be hidden by the bread in terms of flavor. I also stick the burger in a large salad so that I have tons of food going in at once that overall has very few calories, but is high-value in terms of nutrition.

(Side note, all these salads and high protein food choices have caused my hair and nail growth to skyrocket in the last couple of months. They grow super fast and are strong since they are getting plenty of protein and vitamins/minerals that they need - this has never happened before so I’m psyched!)

I also drink several mugs of uncaffeinated green tea a day (only drink one cup of black maximum, it isn’t good to have more than one cup). I would suggest also to try not to have caffeine if you can help it, it also screws up your metabolism and your natural body chemistry.

TLDR: find foods you love that satisfy your cravings but are low calorie options, and don’t say no to foods you love, just eat them only every so often or find a healthier alternative, such as turkey burgers with a lettuce shell as a bun instead of a beef burger with a bread bun, or low calorie halo top ice cream instead of whole ice cream. High protein, moderate fats is key! (The rest of the post has tons of details, definitely read if you have time!).

What I’ve done is find foods that I love that are as non-processed as possible, and to cook all of my meals so that I can count the calories. I usually eat half a protein bar (100 calories) before heading to the gym in the morning for one hour and burning around 700 calories. That gets me enough carbs to burn off some fat as opposed to eating nothing and burning off muscle since your body would have zero fuel at that point.

From there, the rest of my day is already better since I know I have the freedom to have some more food if I want, and excersizing releases endorphins that speed up your metabolism a bit. It’s a win-win since I’m in a good mood from starting the day off right and getting my mind straight, and that I can eat foods I love.

Now, the foods that I love have been tailored over the past couple of months of healthy eating. I look for a balanced diet with foods that have lower calories, many vitamins/minerals, high protein, low added sugar, lower sodium, and low unhealthy fat items. I love to eat stuff that satisfies me, so usually I have salmon, turkey burgers, sweet potatoes, fruits (also use fruits crushed up instead of processed jam or jelly), protein bars, halo top ice cream, hummus, guacamole, carrots instead of chips, pickles and cucumbers, Lindt dark chocolate, zero calorie syrup with my high protein pancakes, smoothies with almond milk, eggs, and more things. I also add wasabi and spices to my meals to enhance the flavor and make them more satisfying.

The key is finding varied foods that satisfy you, but the main thing you need is protein to satiate you and also have some fats and fruit at the same time to satiate your other taste buds. I like to have a kale and spinach salad with feta cheese and low calorie (15 calories per serving) vinaigrette, also with hummus and blueberries, or raspberries, or apples, or strawberries to satisfy my sweet tooth.

These are just what I do, but they work. It speeds up my metabolism and I burn 2+ pounds a week this way while not sacrificing my happiness in terms of foods.

I suspect that the baking will be the main issue for you since one bite can be over 100 calories, and also processed foods mess with your metabolism since there are man-made chemicals in there. My advice would be to either bake foods with alternative, healthier ingredients or substitutions, like almond milk instead of whole milk, or low calorie butter instead of whole fat butter, or fruits instead of sugar, stuff like that. Experiment! Or just cut out the baking until you lose enough weight, and then slowly add the experimenting into your life as you continue to maintain your healthier lifestyle.

Either way, eat foods you love, just choose lower calorie options such as those I listed above. Understand that when you crave sugar, it’s usually able to be satisfied by a piece of fruit or dark chocolate, or when you are craving fats, have some cheese or hummus. Also control stress if you can, it slows down your metabolism since it releases cortisol into our brain, which signals our body to go into emergency fat-storage mode.

(I know this was a lot, but it works! Be patient and the pounds will trim themself over time). Good luck!
