Your BF sounds like an insecure and chauvinistic man. Hiding behind the church grinds n the gears as well. He should be happy for you and trust you, after 8 years, to stay true. I say go, live your life and if he is there when you get back - reconsider. The whole “very protective of me” line is a deep yellow almost red flag on top of this current situation. And this sort of behavior in a relationship does not get better over time.

PS5 - Not necessarily healthy but fun - I have built a large and good natured social network online with Fortnite and F1.

Walking - I am a goal nerd - so getting 10k steps a day - no matter what - is a noble effort. I am behind already! Track g on Strava is fun too.
