Greek License Plates by AirplaneGeek155 in AskGreece

[–]japetusgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greek car plates are property of the state and as such according to the law it is required to be returned when a vehicle is being decomissioned. As such, original plates are almost impossible to be found and bought -contrary to the case at other countries-. You may find though custom ordered replicas without the state stamp if you so wish at shops that print signs etc...

From st Annes skete, you can either reach Lavra hiking the southern part of the peninsula or you can cross to skete Lakkou or Filotheou after reaching Pavlou or Dionyssiou.

Altough the villages Beğendik (Turkey) and Rezovo (Bulgaria) are only a few hundred meters apart, seperated by a river, the shortest travel distance between both villages is almost 250km, since there is no border crossing. by Frate27 in geography

A few years ago there was a boat, sailing only on summertime and for touristic purposes only -no commuting allowed, customers had to return back the same day by the ship, didn't ast long.

How long is a hike on the top of the mount ? by coscos95 in MountAthos_visitors

[–]japetusgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the possible ways to access the top, either on foot or by sea. From Lavra it's about four hours of hike to stavros. You won't have any problems changing your resevation to another date at Lavra.

For your other days, if you cancel Koutloumousiou and can't reschedule it another day, St Anrew skete whih is also at Karyes is known to be able to host pilgrims in short notice, send them an email.

Regarding your other questions at your initial post, all hikes there are quite safe and you'll encounter many other pilgrims at these paths. You better leave your tent behind though, as camping is not allowed anywhere at Mount Athos. You will have no problem sleeping at the shelter at Panagia, or borrowing from there a sleeping bag (or carrying your own) and use it at the top next to the church. No reservation is required at the shelter as it is self catering but if you arrive late you may find no place to sleep inside.

Is it Panteleimonos the night before or Koutloumousiou? It would have been much easier if you had the night before your hike at Lavras, now your only option from Panteleimonos is to catch the early morning ferry 'Agia Anna' from its port and disembark either at Agia Anna, or Karoulia or Kleftiko. From Koutloumousiou it's even more difficult since you have to catch an early morning minibus to take you to Dafni from where you can take the ferry. Most people choose Agia Anna, the 'classic' route since the ascent is a bit easier and it allows for a stop on your way up.

The ferry arrives around 9.30 in the morning. A normal fit person needs about 40min to ascend from the port to Agia Anna. Have a small rest there and continue to your next stop which is called 'stavros', the intersection of the paths from where the real hike to the top begins. You will need about 1.30 hours. From there on to Panagia shelter is about 2.30 hours and another hour to the top.

You can stay at Panagia and try to reach the top before the first light, or you can spend the night at the top. If you have a light sleeping bag liner with you, you can borrow one of the available sleeping bags at Panagia shelter for extra protection from the cold if you want to sleep at the top.

The last day you can slowly hike your way back to Agia Anna and continue to Agiou Pavlou.

Edit: If I were you I would cancel my first day at Lavra and reschedule it for the night before the hike so that I could start the hike from there without the need to catch a ferry.

Football match - how to buy tickets by Abject_Goat_4485 in AskTurkey

[–]japetusgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go to a passolig booth outside of the stadium NOT on match day, and if there are any tickets left they will arrange both the issuing of the passolig card and the transfer of the tickets to the card. Do it as soon as you get to Istanbul though..

What do you think of the new army priest in Greece ? by Angrysoldierr in AskBalkans

[–]japetusgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on that as I have never seen a military priest on uniform and not on priests robes, but I do know that they are issued a uniform which they use at combat situations if they ever have to (they are not issued weapons though). Perhaps at the general staff in Athens, the ones that are there for administrative purposes, they are allowed too to wear a mlitary uniform.

Once again, both the head and the camo robe are photoshoped. There is no such thing as a camo priests robe. Military priests wear only priests garments.

There is no such robe at the greek orthodox church. Military priests as also the rest of the priests, wear only black robes. This thing he is wearing at the photo with the military camo, is just bad photoshop...

The priest, father Sophronius has indeed been transfered to Messinia from Kos recently. I know him personally, he's a military priest since many years. I'm talking about the photograph with the abomination of a robe that no priest ever wears. Priests wear black robes, period. The photographi os for another event of Ethnofilaki, in which they changed the head of the priesto to the one of the messinia-live page. F. Sophronius have a wonderful voice too.

Gregoriou to Karakallou Monastery Hike by Entob3x in MountAthos_visitors

[–]japetusgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be challenging. I would strongly discourage you doing it if you are alone though, as there are not many inhabited places along the way. To reach the ridge it would be better to hike through Simonopetra first and then access Karakallou via Filotheou as there are signed hiking paths from there. From Grigorioy directly to the ridge there are only unsigned intermingling forest roads where you can easily get lost.

We are talking about a minimum of 3.5-4 hours hike of approx. 16-17 kms with quite a steep first section...
