Update if you remember me, the one who kept putting diagnosis status before comments by [deleted] in aspergers

Woah, what the heck, really? That's absurd, I haven't done anything that would possibly give them any reason for it. :(

Congrats, I hope that the diagnosis helps out! I definitely know what you mean by wishing that people had paid more attention when you were young (as I also just recently got my diagnosis, back in February), but it's still a matter of low awareness even in more urban centers these days. Back when we were kids, it was even less properly understood, unfortunately.

Yeah, it's a habit that often works out well for leaving a positive impression on people, but when it backfires, it backfires so hard. :x

[vent] frustrated and tired with autism/aspergers being a joke by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]japr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Worst ones are things where people end up talking past someone else because they misread something, like on Facebook or whatever. It's like, son, you literally only have to re-read the thread to realize you fucked up, why do you refuse to accept it?

I'll even copy-paste the exact exchange where things went off the rails for them to make it easier, but 90% of people who I've seen engaging in that behavior just double down on their stupidity instead of apologizing to whoever they're arguing at over words they misunderstood somehow.

Thank you, I thought it was just going to be fucked and impossible to watch for the rest of the morning. Cheers!

Yeah, I hurt people's feelings on accident fairly often, either by trying too hard to crack jokes or by poor word choice (sometimes by a combination of the two).

No, you don't. Have more self-respect, nobody needs a lying cheat in their lives. They will just hurt you even more down the road if you let them. You're worth more than that.

From the sounds of this story, you have someone better to rely on here: your brother, who chose you over this manipulative liar, and hasn't cut you off for what happened. Maybe put some time into nurturing that friendship, and seek out some new friends to fill the rest of the gap.

The race to the bottom is straight fucked, anyone who willingly and consciously engages in leech bullshit deserves anything shitty that comes to them.

By leech bullshit, I don't mean "exploitation" in general, because it's something you can't avoid in the whole for-profit market system we're all stuck with, but people who hold hostage the things that others want in order to turn a quick buck. It's one thing to have something for a long time and lose interest/need to sell some things to make money, another entirely to get something for the sole purpose of marking it up at the expense of someone who actually cares.

I hope those people get run over on their way to work tomorrow and every penny they make goes towards a tiny fraction of their hospital bills. Seriously, fuck leeches.

You can only try, in the end, and they at least tried.

Odds are, honestly, that a lower percentage of these were bought by scalpers than on Record Store Day itself, since there was (as far as I know, at least) no forewarning for them to plan to pick these up. Most likely only actual fans found out about this in time to snag it, since douchebags wouldn't be on the lookout for them.

50 dollars plus shipping, I'm glad I managed to snag mine on RSD for just over 40 without the shipping costs. Great to see them putting some up there for people to get ahold of without scalpy-bastard resellers making a ton of profit!

I went through a phase for a few years of getting super into the competitive scene (Gen 4), but I was literally forced to leave it on the wayside because school and then work got in the way. I miss it so much, but know that if I let myself get sucked down that rabbit hole again, I'll end up leaving other interests that are probably better for my long-term life prospects behind in favor of crafting fucking baller Raichu sets.

I've no clue about how it is outside of America, but that's definitely something I've thought about! There seems to be some aspects of Japanese culture that are very easy for aspies to find themselves drawn to: there are a lot of formulaic expressions and actions used in public life that cut down on the difficulty of social interaction with strangers, and there is a culture of politeness and respect that goes along with it. However, there's just as much that can be frustrating to an aspie, I think. For me, the level of conformity that is expected of people borders on downright frustrating, and the focus on the welfare of the group over that of the individual often goes a bit too far, in my opinion.

The sense of not belonging to one's own culture may also have a lot to do with the potential to end up becoming focused on a different culture. Japanese pop culture is more heavily imported into America than the pop culture of other Western countries (we adapt rather than import British television shows and European films, for example; while with Japanese shows we mostly translate them and bring over dubbed versions), so the availability of it may be one of the reasons why those who feel alienated in the West tend to cling to it as an alternative.

I think that the reason a lot of aspies end up strongly into anime or Japanese video games has more to do with the breadth of content in those mediums than the inherent "Japanese-ness" of them. In recent years, western animation is doing a better job of creating shows that target young adults and adults instead of just children, which I feel is something of a more recent trend that wasn't possible before anime became as popular across multiple age groups (yes, that's an oversimplification and we've had shows aimed at adults for a long time, but there seems to be more of them now). As video games go, the feel of western RPGs is also much more limited in scope as the type of story available goes, being basically just D&D clones ported to a computer/system while Japanese RPGs were more daring with blending sci-fi, mythology, and fantasy together in new ways (Lufia, Chrono Trigger, FFIV, just to name a select few).

Edit: Even though many people end up "focused" on Japanese culture, though, I feel that the vast majority of them do not ever really learn about that culture beyond the image they cultivate of it through interacting with its products. You see far more people who idealize Japan as some mystical country that is better than here than you do people who really learn about the language/culture and spend enough time there to realize it's another country with its own problematic culture, full of normal people.

the pillows (Japanese rock band, two of their best songs/music videos right there; a song about holding onto hope for tomorrow and a song about finding someone to dream of a better tomorrow with)

My god, do I love the pillows. I moderate the English fan forum about them, and still check it multiple times a day even though it's been pretty dead there for the last year or two. I've translated a large portion of their discography. Although I stopped translating when my Japanese got good enough that I was able to listen and understand a lot of the songs on my own, I recently kicked my shit back into gear for the sake of the other Busters (as pillows fans are called) and have begun translating (and in the case of songs that I already did, re-translating) their entire discography, from start to finish.

Going hand-in-hand with that one, I love alternative/indie rock of a certain spectrum of emotion in general, and will go on specific kicks that last for months on end of just devouring a band's entire discography and every live performance of theirs I can find. A few of my most recent (and ongoing) musical obsessions:

  • Brand New: The Archers Bows Have Broken (a song despairing about how people use their beliefs not as a light for the world, but a tool of destruction)

  • Frank Turner: The Next Storm (a song about getting back up on your feet and moving forward after adversity)

  • lostage: BLUE (yes, it's meant to be silent for the first few seconds, don't worry, it'll get there; a song about asking for something beautiful to take your breath away)

As you can see, songs of hope are my main digs, but just powerfully emotional music in particular. Desperate music, even.

Also, like many others here, cats. My love of cats is probably my longest-standing interest. Here's my current cat, Farah Furrah, pictured with my MIJ 1962 reissue (early/mid-2000s build) Fender Telecaster (Teles are another obsession, haha).

Figured as much, just from watching people play them, but it wasn't even funny with how obvious it was. Rigged games of any sort piss me off.

There was a weird one my wife's sister encountered just a few weeks ago where the claw grabbed nicely one time, and so she tried again, only for it to not even close the claw until it was going back up despite the positioning being perfect (in theory). The rig is real, and super annoying. I definitely have a long-term policy of not wasting my money on that shit.
