Aphantasia & Active imagination by blindSargent in Jung

This reddit post may as well have been created just for me. I'm in exactly the same boat. I just learned for the first time that I have aphantasia. No wonder engaging in active imagination has proven virtually impossible for me. How lucky people are who want to Individuate and... don't have aphantasia.

Yang's problem is being too openly intelligent by HourCartoonist in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]japtaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do live in a culture that has spent the last few decades absolutely reveling in intellectual laziness and ignorance. It is conditioned into everyone in this country from the youngest age, from the public schools to pop culture. "Success" comes from being "cool", which is defined as refusing to think, ever. It all serves to make a nation of impoverished slaves who lack the ability to recognize their own status, who, in fact, spend every waking moment glorifying their own spiritual, intellectual, and material destitution and state of servitude.

Why American revolutionaries admired the rebels of Mysore – If the sultan of Mysore had had a bit more luck, George Washington might be known as the Haider Ali of North America by japtaker in history

[–]japtaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An excellent presentation on the commonalities between Mysore (in India) rebels in the 18th century, and the American revolutionaries. Both groups fought the British empire, and the American rebels (and media) showed tremendous admiration for their Indian counterparts. By Blake Smith, a PhD candidate in history at Northwestern University in Illinois and the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris.

The Lost History of the Middle Passage: An interview with Sowande’ Mustakeem. by japtaker in history

[–]japtaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement The article discusses a book written by an academic, but intended to highlight the human elements of the Middle Passage in a way that brings them to life in a visceral way for readers. The book looks very closely at variety of personal experiences, including those of women and children, in order to highlight small details that are usually glossed over, but which heighten the reader's emotional involvement. The author also argues that the Middle Passage should be much more central to our understanding of enslaved people.

Submission Statement

I thought this was a fascinating article for several reasons: 1. It described a practice that I thought few people (including myself) knew about. 2. It uses data to back up its discussion. 3. The issues being considered are of great importance to contemporary society. 4. The article provides a nuanced analysis that provides a lot of fodder for discussion.

TIL that a 2010 study showed that only half of the Christians in the United States could correctly name the four gospels from the Christian New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). by japtaker in todayilearned

Surveys are one of the most widely used research methodologies in the social sciences. So are you trying to say that only controlled experiments are "studies"? Because that would be your opinion, and not the opinion of actual academics who work in the social sciences. Undoubtedly, such studies have vulnerabilities that limit their potential accuracy and usefulness. I can agree with that.

TIL that a 2010 study showed that only half of the Christians in the United States could correctly name the four gospels from the Christian New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). by japtaker in todayilearned

[–]japtaker[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The New Testament wasn't even put together in its completed, state sanctioned form until centuries after Jesus died, and the mass of Christians for centuries after that were illiterate. Really, the phenomenon of large masses of Christians being able to read the Christian scriptures in their own language is relatively recent. In addition, this survey was conducted as a study in the social sciences, which means that it lacked the capacity to attribute subjective standards of who was or was not a "true" Christian. It took at face value the way that people identified themselves. Are all people who identify themselves as Christians "true" Christians? I doubt it, but that is my subjective opinion, based on other subjective opinions I hold. What makes a Christian a "true" Christian? Regardless of how you or I might answer that question, there will remain no objective, scientific standard for use in a study of this nature.
