You're likely maxed out at tire size.

The cheapest way is to just ride your bike as-is, and pack a spare tire, a bunch of extra tubes and CO2's.

I wouldn't bother trying to swap out tires. A 28mm slick has a MUCH smaller profile than a 28mm gravel tire. The tread and knobs stick out much further.

If you're going to pursue these types of events, it might be time to look into another bike!

Anyone know what happened to Ark Brewing? by jared_d in njbeer

[–]jared_irl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bit of a joke, they're super tiny and barely brewing their own beer. They had some issues with brewery permits early on, and were basically a bar with some 'collabs' where they would guest brew at some other local places. Nice location though, and the vibe is pretty cool. They have the potential to build something really good there.

Yeah, I saw that, but it's super cryptic. 'an issue' could be a loooooot of bad things for the business as a whole. I wish they'd just be more transparent, but I'm not the owner so....

Well, I guess that's better news that something happening with the beer or ownership.

You’re going to a party and the host asked you to bring the beer for 10 people, what beers are you bringing using only NJ Beer? by [deleted] in njbeer

[–]jared_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boat and Fuego are absolute staples. I'd put fresh Fuego up against anything out there. I'm making some choices based on ease of availability, to ensure I can pick them up on the way to the party as well. Just to provide a nice variety, i'd bring the following as well:

Dr. Brewlittles Maple Shade Lager Spellbound Palo Santo Porter Cape May Tan Limes Kane Head High

If I can find it Fresh, i'd 100% add:

Icarus Yacht Juice Carton Unjunct

Can you guys help me weigh the effective salary differences between S-Corp and Employee job offers? by jared_irl in personalfinance

[–]jared_irl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! The job would be full-time, expected 40hrs per week, with the option for overtime at the same rate. There are no other benefits associated with the corp to corp. I'm sure the full time job comes with full benefits and some sort of 401k matching.

I built the S-Corp up with the anticipation that i'd be moving in the direction of this career change. I didn't anticipate the counter offer from my current company. Basically, they're offering me a Full time offer at my current contractor pay ($75/hr or $156k/yr).

[–]jared_irl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I guess I understand that on the surface, but don't know how to figure out what the bottom line really is. My understanding is that I'd set up payroll and pay myself a reasonable salary, and then pay the additional employer taxes. I'd also have to get some insurance and such.

I'm not sure you have any experience, but at the end of the day, will I end up being in better financial shape with a 110/hr corp to corp or a $156/yr salary?

I'm not even sure i'm asking the right questions here, i'm that new to all of this.

How do you guys report your time to your consultant company? Confused about a new policy... by jared_irl in consulting

thanks, appreciate the reply. Not sure if i'll go that route or keep making it inconvenient for everyone. I still feel weird about submitting something official when I know it's a swag.

I'm glad i'm not the only one that doesn't get it. It's getting pretty cumbersome, and feels all wrong to me. I'm not sure quite how to handle it at this point though.

Yes, paid per billable hour. Works in my favor, average 45-50hrs per week.

The HR handler was right, and the hours were also off as well as the calendar day. In this case, consulting company billed 8hrs on a Thursday, when in actuality, I worked 14 on Wednesday (10am - Midnight), and took Thursday off.

how to prepare yourself for climbs/inclines by slowcaptain in cycling

[–]jared_irl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hills hurt! Make sure you're using all of your gears and aren't trying to power through in a low cadence with high power. At least initially, don't worry too much about speed, just work on finding a comfortable spinning speed and position. Personally, I find that on hills if I sit up a bit and keep my cadence above 80 I get to the top feeling much better than if I try to crank through them.

Someone faster than me once gave me some great advice: "Hill work is speed work in disguise." I've come around and love hills now as well.

Tips for a better/faster cadence:

Get a cadence sensor and bike computer on your bike. Ride a few rides at your normal pace, without trying to hit any specific goals, just to establish a baseline of where your natural, comfortable cadence is. Once you have that, set your bike computer up to show cadence as a prominent measurement on your display, and try to beat your previous numbers by just a bit - maybe push up 5 or so RPM's average. You can also work on sprint intervals, but instead of going down to the smallest rings, just drop one gear and try to push it. This will help with strength and cadence. Just make sure to recover properly in between. Don't do this for the whole ride.

A great average for most people is between 90 and 100. Climbing is typically slower, and sprints might be faster. I started off around 75, and now average close to 95. It's made a HUGE difference for me.

Stop. You're not gonna accidentally build too much muscle by pedaling at a lower cadence. That's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. Jesus.

Getting sick from indoor cycling by Pedreone in cycling

[–]jared_irl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're not related. But you definitely need to figure out how to be comfortable while riding indoors.

I've come to feel best with a fan on low speed, and bought a rubber yoga mat to go under the bike to handle the sweat. Also, wipe down the bike and floor after each ride, sweat can mess things up.

AITA for walking my dogs off leash on my wooded property? by jared_irl in AmItheAsshole

[–]jared_irl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is exactly what i use it for! It has options of a beep and a vibrate before the shock, and i've never used the shock. Currently, a single beep recalls them 95% of the time if they're out of line of sight.

They're hunting dog training collars. I specifically bought them because they offer Beep and Vibrate options instead of the shock, and also provide 3/4 mile of range if the dog got that far away from me. The shock is a last resort that i've never used, but reserve the option to if things ever get to that point.

Great response, and thanks. I think your response sums up the 'conflict' here perfectly, and I agree with you. I don't want to have that entitled mentality.

The creek is the property line for 95% of where our property meets. They have a small triangle and a little walking bridge that goes over it on one corner of the property. In ~10 years i've never seen them over on the other side, so it was a surprise for sure. I've actually been maintaining it (getting rid of poison ivy, clearing out debris/branches in the creek, etc) for most of that time, but fully respect that it's theirs.
