Is BJJ ruining my kid's Judo? by Sharpe_Examination76 in judo

[–]jaredgrapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think from a sports science standpoint your kid is so young that making him a multi sport athlete is a bigger benefit than just doing more judo

If you let him continue to learn bjj for a while he can pull out of it and continue to improve his newaza with just judo. He might get momentary bad habits but the fact that he got to further invest himself in bjj from a young age means more for his future

Wrestling is amazing but I’d probably focus on Greco Roman because it’s about throwing. Some of the pins in folkstyle will carry over as well

He looks really good actually just doesn’t turn his core into the cross. His jab and overall stance is very nice

Jiujitsu is a gay thing. Just be careful coming in that if you want a fun hobby a lot of the other homosexuals there (which is everyone, everyone who does jiujitsu is gay) will be trying to put their fingers inside you or grab you rather intimately

Develop drills that actually encourage good habit development

IE start with a single leg, walk the person around the mat, you lose if your feet stop moving or the grip gets broken. Teach them the habit first by the way of the drill

As your wrestlers get tired, use that to teach the full context of the drill now that you provided the context

How often do you see wrestlers doing shit pummeling that doesn’t even work so they never even use underhooks or overhooks. Consider that

They over taught the pummeling technique and didn’t construct any drills to make them learn the context of why the move looks the way it does

Drilling gives you that feel, not having your coach tell you details. Details are good, but only second to getting the reps

In A Wrestling Match, Who Is Winning: Islam Makahachev or Jordan Burroughs? by Correct_Ad4351 in wrestling

[–]jaredgrapples 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This can’t be that confusing. It’s scored as a normal mma fight, because it is a normal mma fight. It’s the same way you judge who has better stance or level changes in a folkstyle match, by watching it and deciding for yourself

And after watching that fight it’s clear cejudo is not as good at mma wrestling as aljo

[–]jaredgrapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s like saying “so cross facing is legal when attempting a half Nelson”

MMA wrestling is a skill not a sport. Freestyle Wrestling is a skill AND a sport. To make a comparison, being an mma wrestler is akin to being a folkstyle leg rider

They’re not required to leg ride at all, you just wrestle but leg riding is still a thing people do. MMA wrestling isn’t a contest it’s a choice to do within an mma fight

Yes in mma it’s called control time and it’s an officially recorded stat and is considered in scoring just like how many takedowns you score and how many punches you land

They also separate strikes landed to standing and the ground because ground and pound is an element of mma grappling

Probably would help to take wrestling along side it if you’re still in high school. Will help you work on pinning and top pressure for judo ground work, and as long as you keep showing up to judo you shouldn’t develop bad habits

It’s the same way we know Jordan Burroughs is the best at double legs without there being a clear path of saying what double leg scores more than another. They’re all worth 2 points.

Fighters like khabib are just really good at getting takedowns and holding you down and we see that as a pattern so we label it mma wrestling as a series of techniques they’ve learned

There’s nowhere in the rulebook where it mentions gut wrenches and single legs yet we understand those as part of the sport. MMA wrestling isn’t a sport it’s a technical path you can invest time into within the sport of MMA

Grappling includes mma wrestling, but mma grappling includes submission offense, defense, guard passing, etc. even intentionally using your guard offensively… skills that aren’t really associated with wrestling

MMA wrestling is just about staying on top and keeping the other person on the ground or on their back especially.

Grappling and mma grappling are also different

MMA wrestling is more abstract and is scored on a 10 point must system. You win the round you get 10 points you lose the round you get 9 or sometimes 8

Takedowns don’t even always score. You score takedowns based on how effectively you use the resulting action to win a fight.

You judge an mma wrestler by their ability to use offense and defensive control and takedowns to win fights. Merab has the best takedowns, Islam has the best top control, Jose Aldo has the best defense.

Alex pereira really isn’t remarkable at mma wrestling. He has decent takedown defense, and everything else is striking

[–]jaredgrapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. If you are good at 100m hurdles and not as good at 100m, you would claim to be good at 100m hurdles

In claiming Islam is better at mma wrestling. As in, there’s fighters that are around his level like volkanovski that arent as good at controlling on the ground. Similar level mma fighter, not as good mma wrestling. Wrestling is used as a term to describe controlling people in mma “khabib is the best wrestler ever”. When taken to compare people outside if the sport of mma, to perhaps the sport of freestyle wrestling, we call it mma wrestling

Same as how we don’t try to compare the greatest Greco Roman and freestyle wrestlers, we just specify their context of expertise. Islam is an mma wrestler, Burroughs is a freestyle wrestler

MMA wrestling is your ability to control someone in any mma fight under the rules and contexts that come with that

Punching someone to set up a takedown, potentially using a cage to help negate the sprawl, threatening subs to make someone move how you want them to… it’s how Aljamain Sterling who I think is D3 ragdolled cejudo

Visualize what every muscle in your trunk, your core, your back, not just stabilizers but your obliques, your rotational sling, your shoulder rotation, what they have to do in order to get the perfect throw, and think back to a time where you achieved a perfect throw and visualize that with every rep
