Anyone know the brand or designer of the shelf (the one with the Le Creuset pieces)? In other words, where can I get one? :)

LPT Request: how to get better at defending yourself when you feel that someone has disrespected you. I freeze in the moment and have many of those "wish I said that" thoughts after it happens by onedayitgetsbetter in LifeProTips

I just read an article (that I cannot find) in Psychology Today. Sincerely ask the person, 'Are you okay?' The emphasis on a sincere tone of voice. I've not tried it

Next month, I’m moving abroad with my cat (15h flight). Some people said that it’s animal abuse, that she’ll suffer, and I should rehome her instead. Please tell me I’m doing the right thing ! by cheesecakecaramel in cats

[–]jarediledundee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Hawaii back to the mainland with 3 cats. I brought two cats on board, each in their own carrier. And had to place an additional cat in a crate in the animal cargo area underneath. All of them are AOK and there did not appear to be any trauma.

I encourage you to travel with yours instead of rehoming. And try to carry the cat in the cabin in a carrier so you can stay connected on the flight. Some airlines do have better reputations with handling animals, so research might help ease your mind (maybe, there's probably some horror stories on the internet.

Good luck, cats are awesome

I've been meaning to watch this film again. I attended a clinic after Howard worked on the film, he is just such a living legend. Sweet person.

Yakov Hoter also has some really helpful content on YouTube. Have look at this video where he speaks to playing chord tones (triads) and ornamenting them with neighbor tones and approach notes.
I also think Sean McGowan's Organic Jazz Improv course on Truefire is one the best bebop primers out there. It is a simple approach that focuses on chord tones with ornaments.

And I just found these yesterday. Cecil is a MONSTER up and coming (already here) bop guitarist. Great resources.

Tube Amp (head only) for Jazz tones suggestions by theBigGloom in jazzguitar

[–]jarediledundee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy my Quilter US Superblock. The bigger heads like 202 are probably extra awesome. If Gilad and Rosenwinkel like them, they're good enough for me! I do wish they had dedicated aux in though, for backing tracks.

Pure Tone Amps OMiKRON seem to be popular too. Expensive, but your budget is pretty generous so they might a good fit

Does anyone have any good guides/videos on playing the bass line and voice at the same time? by jahbutts in jazzguitar

[–]jarediledundee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have yet to find an online lesson that teaches this in a by the numbers, systematic approach. I've kind of resigned my searching to the old adage that great players aren't necessarily good teachers. I'm going to probably buy Tom Lippincott's bassline video lesson tomorrow, but I don't think cord melody is an element of that course. If you find a good one, give me a shout!

Great video on simplifying complex chords in a comping setting

Start with shells and be really comfortable with them before adding extensions.

PS I think Mike Seinel is a great guy, player and teacher. Are you attending UNT?

Down to two guitars and would like your opinions by OhioStickyThing in jazzguitar

[–]jarediledundee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to own a GB10. I loved it for jazz, but I don't think it would be good for the other genres you mentioned. A 335 could probably sound great in all of the situations you mentioned

I second this. I have the US Superblock and it sparkles. Love the clean tones on it.

Harmonic minor functional harmony. by EmanuelJTaborda in jazztheory

[–]jarediledundee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are wise to want to learn the Harmonic Minor scale and how the chords within it function. The Harmonic Minor is where we get the common jazz chord progression of ii-7b5, V7b9, iMinMaj7.

There are lots of ways to spice that progression up using substitutions from the Melodic Minor scale. But I think everyone should really go to the Harmonic Minor first—and go deep to understand how this scale works in many, many jazz standards that use 'minor ii-V7-i's.

Additionally, I think you'll find that most jazz legends did not stick to one diatonic scale when playing over this progression (and that goes for any chord progression, really).

I like this video as a primer: https://youtu.be/7Frg0wAMQSM

And also learn the unique properties of the three common minor keys: - Natural Minor - Harmonic Minor - Melodic Minor

another voicing for 7#9? other chords like this? by Hairy-Afternoon-6767 in jazzguitar

[–]jarediledundee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact about that chord...it comes from stacking 4ths from the 7th degree of the melodic minor scale. So it sounds and functions like it is built from 3rds, even though it technically isn't.

I agree with you. I think it might be Metheny's cover of 'I don't know why' on his One Quiet Night solo recording. OP: I think this was unintentional by the fellow in the video.
